I have read in many interviews, that prior to Live Aid, Bob Geldof was not really a fan of Queen. But...in the same interviews, he says that not only did he want Queen for Live Aid...it was ESSENTIAL to Bob, that Freddie be there too, (remember this was the time when all the members of Queen were into solo stuff with the "rumors" of them splitting up...mostly because they weren't getting on so well at that particular time..which they thankfully...got past)...but I digress. Anyhow...Bob called Jim Beach and told Jim he specifically wanted Freddie to be there with Queen. Then after Live Aid...in all subsequent interviews, Bob has gone on to say that Queen were the BEST band of the day, they played the best, were the ONLY band to nail the Global Jukebox concept Bob wanted, Queen had the best sound...and Bob goes on to say that Queen stole the show..and that Freddie at the forefront could show the world how great he was as a showman...and could "ponce around in front of the world to WATC". What I didn't know...up to these last few days...was that Bob THEN asked later on...for Freddie specifically...to participate in Fashion Aid as well with Jane Seymour. And if you've read my posts on that topic...I noticed that Bob and Freddie Truly enjoyed playing and kidding around with one another. Also...correct me on this one if I'm wrong..but didn't Bob participate in the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992? Remember that Geldof is a pretty tough character, always has been and still is..Geldof is a LOVELY caring person who organized Live Aid & Band Aid.. and gives of himself to charities... But Geldof, who CURRENTLY is doing alot of interviews to promote the reissue of the Boomtown Rats entire back catalogue on CD right now...says himself that he is VERY hard to get along with, that he can come across as brusk, with an attitude, he cusses everybody out..and NOT kiddingly..he MEANS it! He loses his temper alot, and did at Live Aid. For Geldof to play and run around like a little kid with Freddie is..quite adorable and shows...that that old Freddie charm must have gotten through to Bob and he really respected and liked Freddie...enough to keep asking Freddie to help in Bob's charities..and to run around like a little kid with Freddie and not get mad at Freddie when Freddie chased him around the stage at Fashion Aid. From what I can see, Bob is laughing his ass off with Freddie. Anyway...what do you think? Sounds like Bob truly wound up genuinely liking as well as respecting Freddie. |

I heard Bob Geoldof called Freddie Mercury an "old faggot". |

<font color="#52F3FF">Let Us Be Purple wrote: I heard Bob Geoldof called Freddie Mercury an "old faggot".Geldof DID indeed...before Geldof knew Freddie...that was part of what Geldof said to Jim Beach when he wanted Freddie to play WITH Queen at Live Aid. Geldof said to Jim Beach, "Tell the old faggot it will be the biggest show ever!" or something to that affect... ..which I personally think showed...then what a foulmouthed arrogant jerk Geldof was, and still can be as I said above. The first time I read that, my mouth dropped open. But...amazing..once Geldof met and got to REALLY know Freddie...he shut his yap, and changed his tune...real quick. Freddie had that affect on people...like I said...Geldof truly learned to like and respect Freddie. Read the current interviews Geldof is doing in the UK press about the reissue of the Boomtown Rats catalogue on CD Right NOW...Geldof talks about Live Aid...Band Aid...and he says FAR worse things and words about the other artists too, which he also changed his tune on, when he personally worked with each artist and learned to get along with and repsect and like them. That's just Geldof. I don't like that he IS that way, but that's his way. Geldof even says that when he and Bono, who are now good friends, meet together with world leaders to discuss the world's problems...Bono says that he & Geldof are like Laurel & Hardy..and Bono always tells Geldof to keep his often abrasive mouth shut and says geldof and he are like Laurel & Hardy, and says to Geldof whenever Geldof says something rude or ignorant to a world leader, "This is another fine mess you've gotten us into"! |

I'm 85% sure it was that song they wrote. Going by memory (as my only copy of the original broadcast video bit the dust a while ago) I remember Bob saying something to that effect just before he performed it at the show. Oh and btw... if someone is going to upload it, please bear in mind Richard's policy of no official stuff on this site. Maybe you want to consider having someone email it to you Arlene? |

I don't want to spoil anyone's fun here, but at the Freddie tribute Geldof also said that Freddie spoke fluent Gaelic. This might give you some hint as to whether or not he was being entirely serious when he said that he and Freddie were great friends and often stayed up late together, and that they jointly wrote Too Late God. |
great king rat 1138 28.04.2005 10:44 |
Obviously, the 'fluent gaelic' comment was absolute balls, but I wouldn't be surprised if they DID write 'Too Late God' together...but Alas, it was not to be. I just checked on a Geldof site, and Too Late God, taken from the album 'The Happy Club' was written by Bob Geldof and Karl Hyde. Still a great song though! |

I always wondered if Freddie didn't copyright his part of the credit & publishing rights because he & Jackson had that falling out. But I have read...dozens of times that Freddie DID CO-WRITE that song with Jackson. From the Wikipedia Internet Encyclopedia..about Bob..what I said about Bob, they reiterate. Fame and Infamy "By now, Geldof was one of the world's most recognisable and admired men -- and also one of the most foul-mouthed. Known for swearing in order to make his point, regardless of the audience or time of day, he was parodied as a man who uttered obscenities every other word. Most famously, he mythically exhorted viewers to "give us your fuckin' money" during an afternoon stint in the BBC's Wembley studio at the Live Aid telethon - mythical because it's untrue but has become received wisdom. What Geldof actually said was "fuck the address" when the anchorman suggested that people could send money by the postal system, whereas Geldof wanted more urgent and instant contributions made by telephone. Sitting in the studio with him at the time were Andrew Ridgeley and Billy Connolly. The phrase, even though he never said it, has become synonymous with Geldof." That's why I said...Geldof is foulmouthed and often abrasive...but inside he is a GOOD guy...and uses his very abrasive arrogance...to deal with alot of red tape, hypocritical, pencil pushers that don't give a F**K about the world and social injustices. I guess if he talked all nice and sweet...people would probably just push him around. His heart IS in the right place though... |

I get so many "crying wolf" put ons on QZ,...I didn't know if you were joking with me or being SERIOUS with me. Glad you were serious and the story is true cuz I love Geldof and of course I LOVE Freddie and I'm happy they formed a nice rapport and ongoing genuine friendship and working relationship. Have you watched the Fashion Aid footage on my other topic? When Freddie chases Bob around and off the stage, they BOTH act like 2 playful kids having a blast, and Bob (not a person with the best or most easygoing temperment), is still having a blast and is laughing his ass off with Freddie, as Freddie grabs him and brings Geldof back to the stage and pats Geldof on the back. Really adorable! :) |

I've never seen any proof or read or heard any proof from anyone having to do with Queen or Freddie at all, to say it was drugs that Michael stopped being Freddie's friend. It's in the Uncut Magazine, the story about Michael...supposedly catching Freddie doing cocaine in the recording studio. True or not, on a hypocritical note, if Freddie were still alive, can you imagine what Freddie would think about Michael... ...I think Michael Jackson of all people, has done FAR WORSE things. Freddie may have been irresponsible to himself, but Michael Jackson, if found guilty, is a pedophile child molester. As for partying...I do NOT condone what Freddie did, and I have NEVER approved of his drug use...but he only used it on himself. In the Jackson trial, they say Michael Jackson plied young children with wine, got them drunk, so he could molest him. What a creep. Even in Roger's Interview in Mojo he says he thought that Michael Jackson was "mad", and something about, "Turns out I was quite right" or to that affect. To me a pedophile child molester is the lowest scum on earth. Period, end of that story. |

Geldoff was pissing about when he said Fred could speak Gaelic, obviously. You know, a joke? Geldoff knew Fred before Live Aid so the old faggot comment was probably a not particularly PC piece of banter between mates. How much input into TLG Fred had we'll probably never know (and frankly who cares?) but there was no reason for Geldoff to lie, especially on that stage at that time, about getting pissed at Fred's gaff. For a start Geldoff was one of the few people to visit him when he was very ill. |
