I know the answer is correct and I thank you for it, but can anybody give me more details about this? Why does it sound so different to me from other rhythms Queen usually employ?
John does seem to have been a soul/motown fan...I dunno though, Break Free doesnt sound all that motown-ish to me......the Queen song that sounds the most motown-influenced to me is Pain Is So Close To Pleasure....the bassline just screams James Jamerson (the Motown house bassist, or at least the main one of em)
To go off on somewhat of a tangent here, speaking of rhythms...I've certainly noticed that Brian has kind of an odd rhythmic sense in his songs....sometimes when trying to play his guitar parts from sheet music, I find that I dont get the rhythm quite right at first....songs like FBG or certain parts of Now I'm Here....
Freddie has the oddest since of timing of the 4 of them. Think about it....take a Billy Joel, or Elton, while one is English, and one is American, and their songs differ, their piano playing is somewhat similar in rhythmic feel.
Freddie's sense of timing was very odd.
Of course I love it, but it gave many Queen songs their unique sound.
Freddie played in keys that were odd sometimes too.
Brian does have what I call a very "English" rhythm about him, but he always wrote in normal, common keys...D, A, B,....with Freddie, you got Bb, Eb, G#.... this are keys that guitarist usually stray away from.

I read somewhere that Brian sometimes had to re-write some parts of guitar-parts in songs and make it playable for guitar :) Hehe, but I don't know if that's true or not.. but I think I saw that in an interwiew..
For 'Break Free', John gave the second and last beats the accent (or up-beat?).
If you ever go on a cruise, the band will usually convert all popular songs to this style. It can be quite interresting.

that's really what I mean........kind of weird syncopation or whatever......
For those of you who say the rhythm in I want to break free is Motown-ish? Have you considered the possibility that it might be latin? Latin rhythms are usually sincopated...
