In response to the issue I just received, I have written a letter to Rolling Stone magazine as follows: Once again your magazine has disappointed and, dare I say, enraged me over the omission of one of the most talented musicians and greatest showmen of our time, Freddie Mercury and the band Queen from your list of "Immortals." Your magazine's constant dismissal of one of the greatest bands of the 20th century, or at best, relegating them in Rock history to "footnote" status, in my opinion, is a travesty. I have seen artists featured on your covers as the "greatest new artist", only to find them forgotten by the next issue. Yet Queen, to the best of my knowledge, has never "had a cover", not even when Freddie Mercury died. I consider your magazine to be very biased and I will definitely not be renewing my subscription. Sorry! Just before posting this, I read QueenZeppelin's forum posting on Rolling Stone covers. I did not realize that RS did a story on Freddie; but did they respect him and his contribution to music or did they 'dis' him and Queen like most of the media. Excuse me, I guess I better go read the library posting before I go on any further. |

RS Magazine has always under-rated Queen. But they named Brian as the 31th best guitar player. But that's what happens in America. If you do a poll in every place in the world, Queen will be in the top 10, that's for sure. But well done, man. Good luck! |

Thanks Leonardo! But I hope more Queen fans give RS HELL. How can that rag consistently ignore a band that has proved themselves to have 'staying power' and that has such a huge, world-wide following as they have? Is it ignorance, stupidity, or just plain poor taste? BTW, I am a gal not a guy, but that's OK. Thanks for your support. |

Rolling Stone has issues with artists that are NOT Americans. Look at how they lavish praise on people like Springsteen even though the scope of their material is so narrow (not that Springsteen's a lousy artist). The magazine is an insular product for an insular readership. |
Leonardo Venegas 19.04.2005 11:41 |
Sorry, i didn't know that. I have also a RS issue about the 50 moments that changed Rock & Roll history. And one of those is Live Aid, and they don't even mention the spectacular performance made by Queen. But they say Phil Collins played on both concerts. Ridiculous!!!. They also named The Beach Boys and Crosby, Stills and Nash, both great bands, but they were already dead at that time. |
Benn 19.04.2005 12:27 |
.....and The Beach Boys and CSN&Y are AMERICAN - insular publication for an insular readership. |

Yeah critics have been and always will be agains Queen. The asshole critics do it because they know that they could never live up to what Queen is. Its all jealousy. |

fuck rolling stone! Q magazine is the way forward folks! |

I am from the USA. As you all have been discussing, Rolling Stone is a crap rag sheet that just left Queen off of their Immortals list, and RS has dismissed Queen for both RS's entire career and Queen's entire Career. Mojo Magazine, (and their partner Q Magazine) on the other hand, as you all know, regularly covers Queen, and they just did the Q/Mojo Queen Classic Special Edition, which is extremely well done, informative, insightful, affectionate, and full of tributes. When I was a kid....a long....time ago, Rolling Stone was indeed a great publication that while it had it's failings...and yes...did always diss Queen (hiss, boo) it was still a very informative publication that covered music and popular culture, news, politics...Watergate..Vietnam. It was good...but that was like until maybe 1985. Since then, RS has gone out of its way to become the very antithesis of what it started out to be, and now as we all know, is a commercial even tabloid piece of crap, caters to sponsors, advertisers, and teen/tween fans covering crap like Britney & 50 cent. Since about 1985, myself, and ALL of my music industry colleagues and friends consider Mojo Magazine the Ultimate, informative, insightful, cool, cutting edge music magazine. Mojo is much more Universal and recognizes music artists from ALL over the world. Also time is irrelevant to Mojo. Whether an artist is from or started their career in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990..or now..they recognize the Impact, Influences, and Contributions artists made on the landscape of music, other music artists, popular culture, history...and cover them based on that merit...as so they should. You can see Queen, Pink Floyd, Joy Divison as well as The Strokes, The White Stripes and Doves in Mojo. Also Mojo doesn't pander to advertisers and targeting youth culture demographics for fear of losing an almighty buck. They also do entire issues, as you see in well researched, extremely informative tribute to artists and music genres, each and every month with their Classic Editions and Special Editions. Many years ago, Mojo did an ENTIRE issue on how Marvin Gaye conceived, developed, wrote, recorded his landmark album of social conscience, "What's Going On"...and the struggles he had fighting the corporate nimrods at Mowtown records who didn't want him to do it and fought with him constantly over it's release, because (how ironic), it wasn't commercial enough! (love that issue)! I also still have my Mojo issue with the 100 Greatest Guitar Players from like 1988 or something. Old and faded but still much loved. Anyways...I gave up on Rolling Stone years ago. It's run and owned By Jann Wenner who runs one of the nation's biggest tabloids, Us Magazine, and RS is totally geared towards homogonized, commercial, sponsor pleasing blah, blah, yawn. |

Though not a regular buyer of RS, I would always look to see what each issue featured and to my knowledge the only proper report, artical, feature, (call it what you will) they ever did on Queen was on the South American tour. If memory serves it was a James Taylor cover. I had it but alas it has gone missing. It had a wonderful photo of the band by a doorway, Brian sitting on the floor, I think John kneeling, Freddie and Roger behind. That photo is in the photo section here. In my opinion RS isn't worthy of our attention. |

The Led Zeppelin reunion got more press in the US at Live Aid and was the show stealer in the US. Also, RS put David Gilmour at #81 as greatest guitarist, that is a sacrilege! I guess they didn't listen to Animals or The Division Bell because his best guitar performances are on those two albums and on his 1978 self-titled solo effort. |

newcastle 86! wrote: as a post script, good company, i too e mailed rolling stone and have no reply as yet............ yet they take their name from an english band, i wonder when wiil the americans realise ????Actually, the BAND The Rolling Stones took their name from a Muddy Waters song...Muddy was a GREAT black blues American musician, who was unrecognised here in his native USA....and Mick & the Stones championed him, had him play WITH them! The BAND the Rolling Stones who are British of course, care MORE about good American music than our own RS Magazine or the Americam public. Mick, Kief, & the Stones also championed Bo Diddley, Buddy Guy, Tina Turner, Chuck Berry...in the 1960's up to today, and have had all of these artists tour with them. America didn't give a damd about any of these artists til The Rolling Stones championed them and brought them the recognition they all deserve in their own USA. Mick & the Stones also recorded for a brief period, here in the USA durring the 1960's at the GREAT Black record label, Chess Records in Chicago. I am from the USA, and it's a SHAME that Britain recognizes American talent when our own USA press doesn't. It's not just Queen (from Britain) that RS gave the shaft...the USA press and music industry shafted alot of American artists. Tina Turner made her success in 1984 recording "Private Dancer"...in England, and Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler Wrote that song for her. |

The Rolling Stones are one of the best. Queen are a great band too it is a tragedy that Rolling Stone overlooks Queen just like they overlook Pink Floyd(although RS writer David Fricke and former RS writer Kurt Loder are PF fans), Rush and Supertramp as examples. |

Rolling Shit, I mean Stone also slagged off Zeppelin all through their flight. Only sometime in th mid 80's did RS start to retrace its steps & praise Led Zep. I didn't know RS never mentioned Queen's performance at Live Aid. Hell, even VH1 prasised Queen as THE BAND at Live Aid. |
