What common misconceptions about Queen annoy you most? For me, people thinking Roger sung Sheer Heart Attack (some people think he just sung verse 2, but they're still wrong!) generally makes me incandescent with rage. You can't have two much more different sounding people than Freddie and Roger, how the hell can you confuse them??! And obviously the whole CLTCL/Elvis thing. Idiots. |
Kikyos Mom 18.04.2005 12:54 |
for years most people did think all the members of Queen were Gay it was just talked about every time some one would bring up the groups name. the first thing out of there mouth would be oh thats the Gay band. yes it is annoying having to explain to people that only one person in the group was Gay. |
Waggoner Will 18.04.2005 12:54 |
In the Q Classic "Queen- The Inside Story" Magazine, Francis Rossi seems to be under the impression that Freddie wrote 'I want to Break Free'. I also remember an interview with Freddie from 1985 (I think) where the interviewer believed that he had written the aforementioned song. It seems that plenty of people get that wrong...poor John. |
FriedChicken 18.04.2005 13:06 |
"For me, people thinking Roger sung Sheer Heart Attack (some people think he just sung verse 2, but they're still wrong!) " He did sing the part 'ticulate' |
Last Cyborg 18.04.2005 16:01 |
Lol FriedChicken. Sure he does sing that one word (and backing vocals on the chorus obviously). That doesn't make people thinking he sung the entirity of the verse vocals any less annoying... Oh and Mazzalad, the "gay" remarks made by posters in this thread are referring to things other people said. The posters aren't agreeing with it. And Freddie was gay not bi. As far as I know, he started out sleeping with women then gradually switched to men only, thus becoming gay. Not that it really matters, of course. Anyway, what with the other three members being married and having several kids apiece.. they look fairly straight to me. |
doremi 18.04.2005 17:06 |
Also main misconception, that Freddie died in 1992 (Fact it actually was 1991) and that he released his press statement 2 days before he died (FACT it was 1 Day before he died). Also (This drives me NUTS!) misspelling of Freddie's REAL name which I have seen as Farook, Faroukk, Farok, (Fact it was Farrokh). |

That We Are The Champions is a gay pride anthem song. I'm not sure that was Freddie's intent when he wrote it. The truth is that it could be an anything-anthem song. The lyrics are very universal. |

I think the worst thing is when people talk about Queen like they were some mildly succesful, forgotten band. Like that knob out of G4. He said something like 'Queen were great, it's a shame more people don't cover their songs' or something like that. People don't (usually) cover Queen songs because they can't do them without ruining them (usually). It was patronising. He was talking like he is some huge artist and Queen were just some band left in the 80's. Queen are more significant now than he will ever be. All the great bands after Queen have said how much they love Queen. And almost every rock band has played either WWRY or WATC at some point. |

Just one thing I find odd....whenever I say I love Queen..noone ever even mentions the word Gay..and everyone says "Cool"! At least that's one misconception/problem I haven't had. Also I agree with Scott, as I have said MANY times before...NO one will ever be certain if Freddie was Gay or Bi-sexual, EVER...because Freddie NEVER EVER openly or publicly said so to anyone or the press. He kept his private life...private and personal..as he had every right to, it was his own business, AND...maybe he didn't know for sure himself, as many people don't throughout their lives...and so he left that door open. We can conjecture about that or the "probabilities" or "what we do know" about his female and male partners...but the REAL story RIP with Freddie. Also...even so called Gay men...actor Anthony Perkins WAS gay...but he adored his ONLY wife...was happily married to her...didn't do it as a cover. With this ONE woman, he was in love and had SEVERAL children with her. Actor Charles Laughton was openly gay but worshipped his ONLY wife actress Elsa Lanchester. And we all know that at least ONE woman, Mary Austin, captured Freddie's heart. Whether he had sexual retlations with her...or not...apparently didn't matter to him...as flamebouyant or not, live in male sexual lovers including Jim Hutton, well define Gay to me...cause in the end, Freddie in his HEART left his estate, entrusted the care of his ashes, and even in life, he employed and bought a home NEXT door to him...for Mary... I don't label people one way or another. Matters of the heart and sexual matters are too complex as it is...so Freddie was... ..as comedian Sandra Bernhardt says...who dates BOTH men and women, "I'm Not Gay, I'm Not Heterosexual, I'm a People person. Whoever captures my heart and fancy at the time...that's all that matters." |

I think it's pretty much straightforward fact that by the time he died he was 100% gay and had been for some years (and presumably would have remained so, had he lived). I personally don't care what sexuality he was but some people seem to hate the idea of him being gay so much that they try and say he wasn't, or that he was only bi (as if to say "which isn't as bad as being gay") |

But if he was not 100%, but 200% Gay...I still don't care and think he was the greatest singer/performer ever...and the hottest, sexiest man I've ever seen. take it from me...I've worked in the arts most of my life...so I've met my share of VERY Openly Gay men...they are real humans with feelings like evrybody else. Some are bad people, like bad hetero men, and some are good, like good hetero men. As long as they are kind and respectful to me and other people...they have my vote! I like what actress Helen Hayes said about Bigotry towards Gays and people of color years ago to which she had NO patience, (good for her!) She said "the only color that matters to me...is green" (meaning money!). She used to laugh about that because people in the arts are so much more open and understanding of this. This Very morning on NBC's today show, reporter Matt Lauer said there is still of all places, more stigma in sports, about being Gay, than anywhere else. And that like 99% of gay athletes refuse to out themselves for fear of ruining their careers out of bigoted backlash...and the reason for this report..it was about a at one time, VERY successful USA pro boxer...who recently Openly outed himself as gay...and he then saw his VERY successful career...end...as no sports agent would book any other boxer to fight him in the ring...why..like he was going to make a pass at his opponent? So stupid. Let me tell you I am 100% straight..and 100% of my problems in the workplace..have always been from 100& heterosexual men, sexually harassing me inappropriaetly in the workplace/my job. So that's a crock of bulls**t. If a person is professional in their place of employment, then whether they are straight, bi-sexual, or gay...they won't do anything "sexual" to you anyhow...because it's inappropriate, period. Now that poor boxer has NO career and is blacklisted in pro boxing. |
Scott_Mercury 19.04.2005 18:12 |
What??? I was totally kidding. Freddie, my man, my favorite singer ever...was SOOOOO gay, that I can't understand how this "bi-sexual" crap ever came about. Just a joke guys. Freddie was way gay. |

Arlene, I'm with you...I 100% could care less what someones sexual orientation is. I am 100% straight, Freddie was 100% gay...he's 1/4th of my favorite band, I'll tell it to anyone's face. I hate it when people (usually ignorant, low IQ people) think that because someone is gay, they are a pervert that craves gay sex, and masturbation all day long. Check your facts, most rape, and molestation aren't committed by gay me/lesbian women. Arlene is right, most sex crimes, and sexual harrassment charges are filed against hetero men. |

Check your facts, most rape, and molestation aren't committed by gay me/lesbian women. Arlene is right, most sex crimes, and sexual harrassment charges are filed against hetero men. Thanks Scott. True. Most sexual harassement in the workplace is by straight men against women, or even straight women against men as well. Also most rapists are straight, most child molesters, and child incest against little girls, is by straight men, sometimes their own fathers, brothers, uncles, or mothers' boyfriends. Again, I am straight. I have straight friends and VERY openly gay friends...why are ALL of these people my friends? because they are good, kind people who would never hurt anyone. I think you all might be VERY interested in the NEW autobiography by Jane Fonda, whether you are a fan of her's or not. I always thought that outside of her bad parents, that she had a wonderful life..as she was married to 3 I thought very intelligent, powerful, important men. Well I have beed reading her book, and the press has been covering her book, and EVERYONE, including myself, is shocked to see how AWFUL all 3 of her husbands were to her, especially, her 1st and VERY straight husband Director Roger Vadim who starred her in "Barberella". She says he was much older and experienced than her, and he used to bring 2 and 3 women, always cheap prostitutes off of the streets into sex to FORCE Jane to do 3 and 4 ways with them, and she was too scared and petrified to say anything. Then she goes on to say.... ....that there was about a 2-3 year period because of this and other traumas in her life...where she INTENTIONALLY forged VERY close relationships with GAY men, because she felt VERY SAFE and PROTECTED BY them, and she also says that they were artistic, insightful and taught her all about her craft as an actress. So let me tell you...you cannot "Catch" being Gay, just because someone is gay they won't try to molest or harass you (unless they are a jerk) and no more than some straight pervert, and Oh get this...I rent and I am female. For some odd ball reason, the last 2 Female landlords I had, happened to be Gay...and they Knew I am straight..so the issue never came up...because it is a professional situation, I am their paying tenant..they are my landlord. I saw their "lovers", they say my boyfriends. To each his own. Live and let live. And if there's a time tunnel and I ever meet Mr. Freddie, he can be plain out Gay, Loud and Proud. I would still consider myself honored to be in his very charming and talented company....as so were Brian, Roger, and John...who weren't homophobic, or put off. They were working colleagues and friends. If that time travel thing happens....I'll say to Freddie "Great to be with you Darling! we'll both twirl our boas or chiffon in the air, and we can outdo one another with our clothes and makeup and go shopping together on Carnaby Street for the latest fashions BABY!!!! , then I'm gonna rock my ass off with Freddie, and Queen when they play live and record BABY!!!! cause I'll be in the company of the greatest guy (who rocks!) and the greatest band (who rocks!) in the whole f*****g world!!!! :) |

I hate to beat this gay issue to the ground... but one I used to get alot was: "Dude, you know that Queen band you like.... what made that lead singer guy turn gay?" In high school, I must have heard this 3 times a week. I defend the position that as far as your sexuality go's, I feel for the most part, you are born what you are... just as nothing made me "turn straight"... I don't think anything in particular made Freddie "turn gay"... I think you are what you are. Fred may have had a few years finding himself (ie: during what society said to do, that is, sleep with women)... but Fred was gay. I don't think it was his childhood, or up bringing... I just think Freddie was Freddie. His friend Mary Austin put it best "One day, after we'd been living together awhile, I knew Freddie wasn't interested in me intimately in the slightest anymore, he told me one day "I think I'm a bisexual", I told him I thought he was gay." "About a week later, I moved out, just around corner I must say, and accepted my best friend for the good person that he was, the outing of his homosexuality changed nothing...at least not for me." |

it is my belief that freddie was bisexual. but you see a lot of bisexual people have a leaning towards one sex. i myself am more inclined to be attracted to women rather than men. i think freddie was bisexual but preffered men. i saw this programme on freddie's lovers on channel five (english television), was it that programme i don't remember, and i seem to recall that he had a short relationship with a woman in the early-mid eighties. maybe i've got my facts wrong, but yeah. i know that he did have a relationship with her AFTER breaking uop with mary. anyway, the actual; question. i find it most annoying when people say that thety don't like queen when they haven't heard the music, just because supposedly it is c**p or worse "old". i can't stand that. there is someone i know that says they don't like queen but haven't listened to the songs so doesn't know. i put on the greatest hits CD without her knowing. obviously, bo rhap came on first, and she recognised that one. i told her it was a mix CD. then AOBTD came on and she's like, "what's this? this is good". haha! it's queen! anyway...that's my rant. oh wait, the obvious ones as well, like freddie was queen, and the spelling of freddie with a Y. |

Loads of people (Talking about people that arnt fans) act like Freddie Mercury was Queen, because they didnt know the names of the other members, they didnt know that the other members helped wrote the songs and stuff. All they saw was Freddie Mercury being an amazing front man, and knew he had a great voice. So they instantly think Queen = Freddie. They couldnt give a shit about the other members and if their right or not. Why should they? They aint big fans? It dosnt matter to them. I dont get why fans find this annoying. The fans, know that Queen was 4 amazing members, not just freddie, does it matter that lots of people dont see it that way? Let them be wrong, it dosnt matter to them, and it shouldnt matter to you, that lots of people are ignorent about the band. What I did find quite annoying one day was about 8 of my mates on the train home from school trying to convice me that the freddie mercury tribute concert was held before he died. Saying that he annouced he was going to die and then they held the concert... Fools. AndI kept telling them they were wrong but they came out with stupiud things like 'But he sung on stage with david bowie!' And 'There musta been two tribute concerts then!' |

1. the misconception that Queen was a gay band just a load of crap.....just because their singer was bisexual....they don't understand that the rest of the band was completely straight 2. the misconception that their music was gay... bigger load of crap...if anything...after Freddie became more interested in men, Queen took great pains to ensure that their music was for everybody....songs could be for everybody....sexual preferences were not in there...if anything songs were more straight (75% of the band) for example..in My Baby Does Me "My lady....does me good" 3. the misconception that Freddie was the band... he was a significant part of the band and probably the best singer/performer that has ever been on the planet...but he was still just a quarter of the band....Brian for sure was equally as significant with his songwriting and superior guitar playing 4. the misconception that We Are The Champions was in anyway some kind of gay anthem.... huge load of crap....it was written about Queen's rise through all the crap...and for them and their fans for concerts....and to be extended to sporting events etc....great song...has nothing to do with sexual preferences....which is why Green Day is also using it ....now on to the sexuality questions....for sure I'd say Freddie was bisexual because he had sex with female partners....Mary, Barbara etc....If anyone does both sexes even occasionalliy I'd call them bi....I think Freddie would have prefered to be known as something like Omnisexual as when he referred to his comments...."I'll sleep with women, men, cats whatever".........and after all that...who bloody cares.....he was the greatest singer/performer that there ever was and what he did or who he did in his spare time shouldn't be significant in rock music.....enough said.... |

It's all over with a quick but forceful lift and twist. I'm really running out of places to hide the bodies, so I hope Queen does something soon to get themselves back in the top 10. Otherwise, I don't know what I'll do! Queen is the be-all and end-all of the musical world. Anyone who doesn't know that had better be able to run faster than me! |
