Just thought i'd let you know, Queen were voted 13th with A Night At The Opera on channel 4's programme "100 greatest Albums" |
nasty_queenie 18.04.2005 03:15 |
Thats really good, there was a special edition magazine thing in the newspaper(The Courier Mail, Queensland, Australia) a few weeks ago with the 50 greatest albums of all time. They even said only one album per artist with the exception of John Lennon because he had one with the Beatles and one solo and Queen still didn't get one album there. I was appalled. However, it was all compiled by one guy so it's probably a bit biased. |
Fenderek 18.04.2005 05:25 |
Now that was a shite program... 2 Oasis albums in Top20- this is a joke... The debut one above Led Zeppelin's IV... And even though I do like OK Computer- c'mon- that's far from being the best albume ever made! But the most laughable were inclusions of Libertines or Outkast and stuff like that. The best album ever- watching this program was 4 wasted hours... |
kerfuffle87 18.04.2005 06:57 |
yeah i watched that, liked the clip of Roger swearing outrageously about Bo Rhap (thought he was serious for second there!) dont know why i watch these shows cos i know im gonna be disppointed by the fact that so many crappy new bands are actually featured in the poll. :( |
brENsKi 18.04.2005 08:01 |
the next pollave to make allowances virtually EVERY one of these polls are biased towards recent recordings the whole point being that either the - poll-demographic is all younger people, or people can't be arsed to look any further back than last 10 years look on the bright side the queen + paul rodgers album will be in the top10 of next poll |

To back it up they even showed the bit of video where you can really see John playing song and singing. LOL |

yeah... Roger's little interview was pure class, and the bit about 'you're my best friend' made my ears prick up too... the lady said: "and then you've got John Deacon being absolutely lovely singing you're my best friend" ...i think i'll give her the benefit of the doubt and say she was speaking metaphorically and meant that he wrote it 8-) lol |

Out of interest where did the Libertines finish? |

I think that the programme was very good. I watched it till 10:30pm and I had to tape the rest. Coming 13th out of 100 is pretty good. I was sort of suprised that OK Computer by Radiohead was number 1. I thought it was going to something like Thriller or Sgt Pepper. |

The full list is here: link On the whole it was alright. No Purple Rain, alot of albums should have been higher, but for a modern poll it is okay. |

Search them out on google and think before you post such stupid fucking posts. Only one of the most successful bands of the 90's. It has nothing to do with modern kids, and to do with quality music. |
Adam Baboolal 18.04.2005 20:23 |
I woke up to seeing Queen on the list and then realised that they were 13th. "Okay", I thought, thinking that there must be some major classics ahead. Oasis????? Madonna?? Guns N' Roses????? I would never put any of their albums/works above a Queen one. Not even Hot Space should lose out to them! And while I didn't think Ok Computer was a no.1 greatest album ever - I can recognise that it's a great album, being an on and off fan. But surely there's better? What the heck happened to Muse who were nowhere to be seen!?? Hearing their Absolution was on par with discovering Queen, for me. I too believe that these polls are always biased towards people's thoughts towards current records, like Brenski said. They need to stop doing these poll-type progs for a few years as they're getting more and more disappointing/ridiculous. Peace, Adam. |

Any Bronski Beat album in the top 100 ?Radiohead... there really is no way to describe Radiohead--by the way, they originated in the early 90's, so don't call them kids... They are basically really, really alternative. If you want to hear an extremely good one by Radiohead (not as alternative as they usually are), listen to 2+2=5. Trust me. |
antiden 19.04.2005 01:57 |
to Adam Baboolal: The whole Queen's catalogue IS MAJOR CLASSIC, comparable only to The Beatles catalogue. And as for different polls I think it is idiotically funny to call other band's and artist's albums greater than ANATO or SgtPepper for example... |
Fenderek 19.04.2005 04:17 |
How about the list looking like that: 1. Pink Floyd THE WALL 2. Queen A NIGHT AT THE OPERA 3. Led Zeppelin IV 4. Black Sabbath PARANOID 5. Deep Purple MACHINE HEAD 6. Queen SHEER HEART ATTACK 7. Pink Floyd WISH YOU WERE HERE 8. Metallica MASTER OF PUPPETS 9. King Crimson IN THE COURT OF THE CRIMSON KING 10. Yes CLOSE TO THE EDGE And so on and so on... Or it could be 10 other as important and good albums... C'mon- voted by ppl who don't know shit about music, who buy their records in Tesco and think that whatever is hyped on tele is a great and soon legendary band / artist... |
eggy 19.04.2005 04:51 |
Definetly Maybe is a classic and is rightly as high as it is. Just because it doesn't fit in with 98% of people taste on here, doesn't hide that fact its a damn good album. Many of the other 90's albums are the same. The only album unrealisticly high in my opinion is The Libertines. I can think of many albums better than the majority of Queen's later albums. I think we need a little less bias, and more subjective appreciation of other music!! |
Fenderek 19.04.2005 06:22 |
eggy wrote: Definetly Maybe is a classic and is rightly as high as it isBut "What's The Story?" ALSO in top20 is some kind of misunderstanding, don't you think? They're not THAT influential to have 2 albums in top 20! Better than Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin... C'mon! |
eggy 19.04.2005 09:11 |
They are two classic albums, that's what this poll was about. There was no influence on other musicians factor taken into account, just listenability of the music. As Noel Gallagher said, Champagne Supernova is good, Wonderwall a classic, and roll with it is shite. I disagree with placings on quite a lot of the stuff. Where the hell is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road?! But, that's life! Oasis aren't overrated at all IMO. Still not keen on the new single though! |

'Who the fuck are Radiohead ? Are they rock pop or what ? Fuckin kids know fuck all about music these days.' Oh yeah and you do ...... no really Why are there so many people who only consider music from their own decade(s)as the only good music? Radiohead was by far the most influential band from the nineties. If you don't know them, don't judge other people for listening to them. The fact that you're unfamiliar with them makes you a musical fossil. Every decade has it's brilliant bands, people who aren't willing to see this haven't got a decent vision (only one vision) on music. They like music because of nostalgia. These days there are plenty of brilliant bands: - Audioslave - Coldplay - The Mars Volta - Muse - Placebo - Radiohead - System Of A Down - Queens Of The Stone Age and so on .... Like there wasn't any shite music during the seventies and eighties (Donna Summer, BeeGees, Culture Club Aaaarghhhh!!). I love bands from the sixties, seventies and eightties(Deep Purple, Dire Straits, Metallica, Pink Floyd, QUEEN!!, Rainbow, Rolling Stones, Rush), but there were als good bands during the nineties and beyond (Gun's 'n Roses - part eightties I know -, Dream Theater, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Portishead, Radiohead) so cut the crap! |

Most people over 40 will have not heard of them. Same with Oasis only ever popular in UK and parts of Europe. have achieved fuck all in the US and other parts of the world. Simple fact the people who voted for this pile of shit are mostly drugged up stupid students. |
Last Cyborg 19.04.2005 13:51 |
Radiohead have actually influenced a lot of bands. Muse for example were influenced by Radiohead and they are now very popular in the UK, Japan, France, Russia, etc. So Radiohead's influence is affecting music the world over... Whether or not you like them or whether they're actually any good etc is a matter for opinion, but it is a fact that many bands since them have been influenced by them, so they have changed music. As for people over 40 not having heard of them, that may be true, but since when was over 40s the only valid audience for music? Bands aim are generally formed by and aimed at the younger generations. Are you saying bands are only cool or valid if my *dad* has heard of them?? Surely the opposite applies! I'm sure in the 70s there were lots of over 40s who didn't like the stuff going on at the time. |
iljaiya 19.04.2005 15:00 |
'It's a simple fact that this Radiohead band have not changed or defined music.' They did and about defining music: Who'd came up with something completely original? Music is an everlasting process. Those bands from the sixties based their work on earlier music, change it and grew. Nobody ever worked out something completey new. Same goes for the seventies and other decades (Jimmy Page and Ritchie Blackmore made a lot of their songs from existing bluesriffs). What frustrates me is that some people think that only the music from 1963-1980 has an alltime status. Which is not true. 'Most people over 40 will have not heard of them.' True, but is that an argument?? How many people that were over 40 in 1972 knew Led Zeppelin??? 'Same with Oasis only ever popular in UK and parts of Europe. have achieved fuck all in the US and other parts of the world.' Ok let's make a difference between Oasis and Radiohead. Oasis only has a decent fanbase in te UK and some European countries that's true. Also isn't their music a big influence for many other bands (as far as I know), but that doesn't count for Radiohead. This band has had (and still has) a big influence on a lot of bands (don't like the Radiohead - Muse comparison) even on bands in genres you'd least expect (Dream Theater = progressive metal). They've got an extensive fanbase around the world. Radiohead is exploring the boundaries of music in the same way Pink Floyd once did. Same (exploring) thing goes for The Mars Volta (we'll be hearin' a lot from these guys in the future). 'Simple fact the people who voted for this pile of shit are mostly drugged up stupid students.' Subtility is not your strongest point is it? |
Last Cyborg 19.04.2005 16:25 |
