I'm sure many of us have seen the cover stories Rolling Stone did for music icons like Jim Morrison and the (in my opinion, highly overrated) Kurt Cobain. To my knowledge, such a cover does not exist with Freddie Mercury (nor does any cover story regarding Queen). Which brings me to my question; what did Rolling Stone magazine do (if anything) for Freddie Mercury's death?
There was a one page Obit. From what I remember, it was a respectable tribute to Freddie, which is probably the nicest thing Rolling Stone ever wrote about the band.
One thing I do remember is that they complimented Queen for calling the album "The Works," as in what you order on a pizza, and not "Works" which sounded much more conceited.
I just submitted the 3 page January 1992 Rolling Stone obituary to the library here -- it was too long to post. So if it goes through, you can read for yourselves. :)

Michael Jackson was on the cover of that issue, unfortunately. And, yes, the article seemed somewhat tabloidish...especially with that horrible tabloid photo included.
Rolling Stone has some good writers, but it's really a souped-up shithole overall.

Egret, can you tell me please where exactly did you post the RS obituary?

It has been over 13 years since I saw the article in question, so my memory got a little fuzzy. I also forgot it was 3 pages instead of 1.
Still, I do remember the Works discussion.
I remember buying that issue and being disappointed at the coverage. Then again I shouldn't have been surprised because that magazine has always hated Queen. I too thought the article was only about a page long. At either rate it was too short a tribute and I have never seen a major article about Queen there since.
I submitted it to the library in the "features" section. It was too long to post here in the boards.
I don't have the pictures -- it's just text from a data service, not a scan. One picture description did say something about "Freddie leaving a hospital" or something. I don't like the article, myself. But thought maybe it would be better to have it at hand if people intended to discuss.
ETA: I see it has not gone through yet, though after I submitted it I got the message that it would be taken under consideration. So it's somewhere in the website files.
Whatever. I thought it was a little snarky for an obituary.

And while we're on the topic of Rolling Stone, they printed some really irresponsible information about AIDS back in the day as well. I mean, whacky pseudo-science that badly misinformed people.
::hates Rolling Stone, hate hate hate::
I know, they're not the only ones. OK, all done with that now.
