On March 20th 1992, at "The Freddie Mercury Tribute" Andy Butterfield launched the Red Ribbon as the worldwide sign for AIDS-awareness and founded the (and still very busy!!!) RED RIBBON INTERNATIONAL. People should wear this symbol as a sign of their awareness of hiv and aids and compassion to the and with the people infected. To visualise their knowledge, a confirmation showing that aids does exist and a message to have ONLY safe sex. Millions of people got themselves this Red Ribbon, and they were sold throughout the world and many worldfamous artists wore them at awardpresentations and during concerts. With our hero Freddie being the most influential inspiration in those days, Queen themselves wore them too. BUT WHY THE HELL DON'T THEY WEAR THE RED RIBBON ANYMORE? How can they co-organise the Nelson Mandela 46664 concerts 2x, and NOT wear this worldwide and established symbol anymore? Queen is SO hot, and SO popular, AND ON TOUR again, that i am amazed that they do NOT use their possibilties to reach so many youngsters during this tour, and make them aware of this terrible disease, to have safe sex, and give away (or even sell, with all profits going to the Red Ribbon International or the Mercury Phoenix Trust) red ribbons at the venues where they perform? People should NEVER stop wearing the red ribbon as long as this desease is still growing by the day and taking millions of peoples lives. QUEEN HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY HERE,i would say. WHAT DO YOU THINK....shouldn't they wear the ribbon on stage, off stage and certainly during interviews and pressconferences? They could easily show a beautiful short promotionfilm during the show to tell about all this AGAIN !!! In Holland, Marco Borsato does this for WARCHILD. every single show, he shows this video and he raises a lot of sympathy, awareness and donations from ALL his audiences! QUEEN should do the same and grab every opportunity to tell the world, OVER AND OVER AGAIN ! (funny...that's a Valentine song !!!) Basje |

Maybe they should...maybe they didn't think of that at all too. But everything they do or so is for the Mercury Phoenix Trust so their Red Ribbons...they have them in their hearts, their souls and their minds. Write a letter to Brian May and he may notice it... I don't think those Red Ribbons are a big deal anyway...They do so much for AIDS that they don't have to wear it anymore I think, but hey, that's just my opinion. :P |
Q-Nick 15.04.2005 04:18 |
They wear the "Let Me Live" Bands for the MPT. |
Voice of Reason 2018 15.04.2005 06:19 |
Surely you therefore mean that anyone who doesn't wear a red ribbon everday doesn't give a shit about Aids or anyone who has it? Jesus. This tour is not an aids-awareness tour... |

Freddie (and John) is probably in their thoughts at the start of each concert and during various songs. |

oh just F**K OFF MAN YOU SAD EXCUSE FOR A LIFE FORM! |
puzzled86 15.04.2005 15:03 |
Yeah, can't you email Brian May on his website or at least write him a leter. If you think it's that big of a deal (i think it's a good idea to wear the ribbons), then politely send a letter to one of the guys and tell them. |
deleted user 15.04.2005 15:07 |
i also agree they should wear ribbons and just write a letter to somone who can pass it on or e-mail somone from Queenzone cos im sure one of them can send it into the right direction. |
FriedChicken 15.04.2005 15:39 |
"In Holland, Marco Borsato does this for WARCHILD." Thats because marco is a sad prick and only does this for attention. People who don't know Marco Borsato. He is the dutch bono |

I don't think rock bands should be socio-political messengers at all. The world is heavy enough. A rock show can be a way to forget all the darkness that looms out there for a little bit. As far as rockers spreading the virtues of abstinence? LOL! Don't you realize how silly that sounds? These are the same kind of people who would fuck in a tub full of baked beans or use a mudshark as a sex toy. No thank you, I'd rather have politicians be the hypocrites who preach to me. |
Pim Derks 15.04.2005 16:17 |
They should drop the It's A Beautiful Day intro and show a video of people who are infected with AIDS who are dying. Now THAT'S an opener! Pee Pee! |
Dany Mercury 15.04.2005 20:06 |
Well, maybe a video of people having AIDS while the song "It's A Beautiful Day" plays...then at the end of the song and video, we see and hear Freddie say : "C'est La Vie !" (That's Life !) because that would leave a very good message. There's no known cures and Freddie knows it and says "C'est La Vie !" That might be a good idea... I'll try to respond to everyone... Someone said that rock stars saying something about abstinence is silly. Well, they don't tell you not to do it, they tell you to do it with caution. And even if that was the case, it's just a reputation that rock stars have. It's not every rock star that is like that. A lot of them are, that's true. Someone said that rock stars should not be socio-political at all. I disagree. Rock stars can reach more people than politicians and if messages can be heard by them, then it's good. People will listen more to them than any politician. For exemple, if George Bush would do a campaign for AIDS, do you think it would bring more money ? Well...I don't know, but I don't think so...Politicians, well most of them, give bad exemples to people. Violence, bombs, nuclear weapons or any kind of weapons (Best exemple is Bush), unfaithful husbands (Clinton), corruption and I don't know exactly what (Nixon)...the list goes on and on... Elton John and Queen have done a lot for AIDS. Anyway, maybe they should give Ribbons or Bracelets of Freddie Mercury for the USA Tour and the Canadian Tour, if there's any. They might even say on stage : "Please give for the Mercury Phoenix Trust !". And Brian says he doesn't do it for the money because he has enough, then I guess Queen should give all the money that the merchandise and the tickets give them after having paid the crew. Not just a small part of the money. Dan. |

Can I ask who is Marco Borsato ? The Dutch Bono ? I saw a picture of him but what does he sing ? Why is he an a**hole ? Is that just an opinion of that's the opinion of almost everybody ? Dan. |
teddybear 16.04.2005 00:30 |
No - I don't think they should. I think if you did it all the time then it would lose the meaning when they are worn for special occasions (such as World Aids Day) - and then lose their impact? But hey..............if they decide to, then why not wear a "care bear", "save the koala pin" a "legacy pin" and perhaps a "red nose" as well ???? Could make a great costume !! (hehe) Just kidding on that - but seriously - I think NO as it can lose it's impact if worn all the time. |
mr bad guy 5656 16.04.2005 07:19 |
Djeezes, all this fuss about what? It's just rock'n'roll you know. Brian and the band wear those let me live-bands, so what the hell are you nagging about? The idea of an Aidsmovie during a beautiful day is very sick. I don't anyone to throw up in my neck during the film. Imagine... Their real message, if there's one, is just in their music. The band playing Show Must Go On will be much more intense and beautiful than anything else. Kisses, danny |

I think he does a good job asking for attention for an organisation as war child... My opinion is that some of his songs are okay... So Marco Borsato being an asshole is just the opinion of some people, not the entire dutch population ;) By the way... Bono is great too! |

Thanks for the info ! Some people are kind to take their time and answer questions in an intelligent way... |
jasen101 18.04.2005 02:07 |
oh who freakin cares if they wear red ribbons....?let them move on from the AIDS movement for a little while...i mean they just played 46664...give them a break! |
bas asselbergs 18.04.2005 19:56 |
If you go out on the streets and ask people nowadays if they know what the symbol means, you will be astonished by the fact that almost 90% of the youngsters ( 14 to 20 years ) do NOT know what the Red Ribbon means or stands for... THAT is why the band ( being very well able to use their role as communicators to the max ) should wear them as much as possible. The Ribbon has already lost its meaning and impact through the years for the biggest part. WE, the Queenfans...WE know...most of us i hope. But there are still TOO many paople NOT aware and if a band like Queen does tell them and shows them every time....THEN the power of awareness and the symbol will return. NOBLESSE OBLIGE.... I think they are obliged to do this. They already don't play Freddies songs too much (2-3 per show only...!!!) so, do they have to shut up and not pay respect to at least make their audiences aware of the reason and the cause we (and they) lost the best entertainer of all times? It certainly won't offence or hurt anybody if they do so, and it sure as hell CAN save a lot of lives when and if they do wear the Red Ribbon. Basje.... |
bas asselbergs 18.04.2005 20:07 |
Oh yeah...about Marco Borsato.... HIS last shows in 2004, were a LOT more spectaculair, surprising and entertaining than the dissappointing Brixton Queen show....that says it i guess....Marco easily equals Robbie at Knebworth...or Queen in 1986!!! Would love to see "Queen and Paul Rodgers" top that...or make an attempt to do so.... Can you imagine Brian flying through the sky like Rob Winter ( ex-Robby Valentine guitarist too, who went on tour with the Brian May Band in '93 as support-act )during a guitar solo? and even if Brian would do that..it wouldn't be original anymore as it has already been done now....by Rob! Marco's shows are packed with the newest hightec gimmicks and surprises, and for sound and vision it is the creme de la creme...haven't seen that in Brixton, or hearted that from the other shows... Weren't Queen wellknown and famous for that in Freddies days? When using the name of Queen....there should at least be some of the old ingredients in the show? Now they are trying SO hard NOT to make it look like the old Queen...that using the name Queen on tour doesn't seem fit anymore... If they change everything, then why not the name too? RIGHT !!! another name doesn't sell tickets quit as easy! |
FriedChicken 19.04.2005 04:01 |
"If you go out on the streets and ask people nowadays if they know what the symbol means, you will be astonished by the fact that almost 90% of the youngsters ( 14 to 20 years ) do NOT know what the Red Ribbon means or stands for..." Who cares that they don't know it. wearing a Ribbon doesn't cure Aids, knowing what it means doesn't cure Aids. So whats the point. I think most Queen fans (people who go to Queen, you know, the band who lost his singer to AIDS) know what Aids is, and how to get and prevent it. |
Knute 19.04.2005 04:47 |
Bas Dude! Climb down off your soapbox. Your pontificating is ridiculous. You think people are that stupid that they need a red cloth tied around the arms of rock stars to remind them of what aids is? Why stop at a red ribbon? Why don't the band have images of sick and dying aids patients in a hospital ward up on the big screen. Followed by a guy in a giant condom suit entering the stage with a placard around his neck that reads: Remember Safe Sex Kids! They're a rock band for chrissakes, not an educational institution. |
Voice of Reason 2018 19.04.2005 05:12 |
Well said Knute! Perhaps Roger and Paul should have unprotected anal sex live on stage during the show to remind people of the danger!!! |
FriedChicken 19.04.2005 05:14 |
"Weren't Queen wellknown and famous for that in Freddies days?" No! Queen never used gimmicks like Marco Borsato. Queen just performed, and didn't use hi-tech tricks to make the shows interesting. And if you want red ribbons on stage. form your own band |
Knute 19.04.2005 06:27 |
