Rolling Stone has just issued the hundred greatest artists of all time - but where are Queen? Now I know that Rolling Stone has never been fans of the band, but should they really have been left out completely? Here are the links: link (The first fifty) link (The rest of the list) |
bigc 10.04.2005 09:35 |
I like that list personally..if only for this... 8) Little Richard by Little Richard lol...someone had to pick themselves tho 9) made me think.. 9) Aretha Franklin by Jerry Wexler if only it were by Freddie Mercury. and who is Jerry Wexler? |
NOTWMEDDLE 10.04.2005 16:39 |
Queen and Pink Floyd were both snubbed. I take it Supertramp would be ignored too. Seems like real rock music gets shot down by a**hole critics! |
Mr.Jingles 10.04.2005 20:01 |
No Queen, No Billy Joel, No Pink Floyd, No Metallica. Rolling Stone doesn't know shit about music, and that's the bottom line. |

And who is that Rolling stone??? |
doremi 11.04.2005 11:20 |
I read this list and was completely ticked off at many artists not included, but most significantly Queen, and/or Freddie Mercury. But...Rolling Stone has made no bones about their 3 decade long disdain for Queen. Read Rolling Stone's current Book of 20th Century popular artists guide to their albums. They cannibalize Queen and every album Queen ever released. Thank goodness I did NOT buy the book, I read it in the store FIRST. But then I have read that Roger once was so disgusted with Rolling Stone that he wrote them an angry letter...on an air sickness bag! That's MY ROGER!!!!! Good for him!!!! |

bigc wrote: I like that list personally..if only for this... 8) Little Richard by Little Richard lol...someone had to pick themselves tho 9) made me think.. 9) Aretha Franklin by Jerry Wexler if only it were by Freddie Mercury. and who is Jerry Wexler?Jerry Wexler was for quite a few decades one of the top Brass, Heads of A&R, Producers at Atlantic Records, and a champion of "crossing over" R&B music into the mainstream. He "Discovered" and mentored Aretha Franklin, but he also signed to Atlantic Records and/or collaborated with...Sound Engineer/Producer Tom Dowd, The Allman Brothers Band, Wilson Pickett, ....The Rolling Stones, ....Led Zeppelin, Van Morrison, Otis Redding, etc. |
doremi 11.04.2005 11:31 |
I agree, had Freddie been around still...Freddie would have been a WONDERFUL person to discuss Aretha Franklin.... Also...Rolling Stone should have gone to former Columbia CEO/President Walter Yetnikof...who signed Freddie to Columbia Records for Freddie's solo Recording Deal...Yetnikoff is a BIG deal...still in the record industry, just wrote a Big selling book I've read parts of.... ...and Rolling Stone should have asked Yetnikoff to give his fond artistic impressions and recollections of Freddie (which Yetnikoff was happy to do and already did do for the Freddie Mercury Solo Collection Box Set.) I am certain that Yetnikoff would have elaborated on how wonderful and creative our Freddie IS and the substantial landmark contributions Freddie made to music, history, and popular culture. |
MercuryArts 11.04.2005 15:28 |
Everyone knows that if you bought only the records that RS recomended you by based on their reviews that you would have the WORST record collection in the world! |

Rolling Stone has been ragging on Queen since the 1970's and I have no idea why. So did Creem Magazine (now defunct) but was very powerful in the 1970's. But as a red blooded American...I always loved and still love Queen! Why they are as true blue as the red, white and blue. I salute Queen!!!! To hell with Rolling Stone, 50 Cent my ass! |

Deacon_Fan 12.04.2005 17:05 |
Its very obvious why Queen isnt on the list. There is no way that an American Magazine would allow openly flambouyant glam artists like Freddie Mercury, or bands associated with them like Queen on the list. Especially a "foreign" band. Notice how theres no David Bowie either. Its utter shit, and to be honest, Rolling Stone magazine isnt worthy enough to feature Queen. Queen are far beyond any kind of critic in the United States. Another reason could be that the artists who chose the bands for the list may have naturally assumed Queen was on it, and so didnt bother to vote for them, although that sounds ridiculous. So who knows really, but its not like it matters. The fact that there are so many Queen fans out there speaks for itself. |

There is a great book I've been reading about the history of the greatest metal artists...and Queen IS in the book...and the book LOVES Queen and takes a VERY direct scathing shot at the press for dissing Queen, but in a humorous sarcastic way. The book says something to the effect, "and yes Queen one of the biggest selling, most popular music acts ever was actually hated by the press...to which they probably consoled themselves by "drying" their "tears" with the telephone book size royalty checks they received based on their millions of album sales worldwide from their millions of fans". I cracked up when I read that! Take that, nasty old press. |

Rolling Stone seems to be Bob Dylan's bitch. Of course, they had to shut their mouths when Bob Dylan appeared on that dumb Victoria's Secret commericial. Would it have been someone else who they personally don't like very much, Rolling Stone would have bashed them in every single way possible. |

The only good songs that The Police made where 'Every Breath You Take' and 'Wrapped Around Your Finger'. Most of their songs have that same old boring reggae funky riff. Not a very creative band, and certainly overated. |

"Most rock journalism is people who can't write, interviewing people who can't talk, for people who can't read." Frank Zappa I understand why the RS people are out to lunch. They're glorified fans, either old guys like Dave Marsh, hanging onto the fact that Dylan and Springsteen changed there lives and think they're still relevant artists, or new guys intent on making the Strokes or White Stripes into legends. In my dictionary, immortal is defined as "never to be forgotten; everlasting." If that's the case, while accepting that the magazine hates Queen, I'd have one question for anyone who put the list together, if, based on these tidbits: * in Europe and Britain, Bohemian Rhapsody was voted song of the century, is constantly listed as the number 1 song of all time in virtually every territory outside of the US, and ARGUABLY the greatest song of all time * WATC and WWRY are ARGUABLY the two greatest sports anthems of all time, and are still played around the world 28 years after the fact * at Live Aid, in the biggest concert event of their generation, Queen ARGUABLY (only in the States, the rest of the world knew otherwise) were miles better than anyone else Adding the fact that they were video, studio and live pioneers, and that they've influenced acts as diverse as Metallica, George Michael, Coheed & Cambria, Foo Fighters and Green Day, and that their musical (site as it may be) is keeping their music alive to a new generation, my question would be: "Given this information, based on the accepted definition of "immortal", do you really believe that Roxy Music is more deserving of a spot on the list than Queen?" If they answered yes, I'd have a follow up question: "As you call yourself a music journalist, do you actually know ANYTHING about music?" |
Mr.Jingles 14.04.2005 13:59 |
You know what else is extremely annoying about Rolling Stone, their extreme left-wing political rant? I happen to be a liberal (moderate), and I even find their radical extreme liberal bithcing extremely annoying. After all, what else can you expect from a bunch of pot smokers. Perhaps those Rolling Stone journalists (if you can call them that) should put the hash pipe to the side before writing their shit. |
doremi 14.04.2005 19:02 |
Tell you what else is a load of s**t. The owner, Jann Wenner, founder/publisher of Rolling Stone is VERY powerful, and even started and founded the USA Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, US Magazine (which is nothing but a tabloid). It doesn't matter how influential an artist you are to get in Rolling Stone Magazine or The Rock Hall, its' that you better be on Jann Wenner's good side or he owes you a favor, or whatever or some political left wing whatever reason. Plain and simple and alot of artists have complained about that for years. |
Mr.Jingles 15.04.2005 13:43 |
U2 has two fan magazines... One is their official 'Propaganda' fanzine, and the other one is 'Rolling Stone'. 'Spin' on the other hand is the fanzine of 'The White Stripes' and 'The Strokes'. In fact, 'Spin' will include The Strokes soon on their new front cover with the headline: - '100 reasons why The Strokes are better than The Beatles'. |

Yeah, Rolling Stone are experts. Queen, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, Rush, Deep Purple (one of the inventors of heavy metal, mind you), YES, Geneisis, and R.E.M were all left out. I don't need to tell everyone why Queen and Pink Floyd were inovative. Van Halen REDEFINED guitar rock. They were fresh, unlike any other heavy metal or hard rock band to that point...you could dance to their music or rock out majorly to it. Eddie Van Halen was a guitar virtuoso unlike any other. And yet they're completely ignored. Much like Queen, Van Halen is a group with one member that gets critical plaudits from US critics, but yet the group as a whole is often overlooked. Pathetic. David Bowie ends up at 38. One of the most influential and creative artists of all time ranked under MADONNA. For that amtter, she beat out Eric Clapton, Elton John and Cream, too. Somehow, the most overrated band I can possibly think of (Nirvana) gets another juicy tribute for being an okay rock band of the 90's. Note to critics; Nirvana weren't INFLUENTIAL. Led Zeppelin was influential because their music inspired other artists who also made good music, but incorporated Zep-elements into their styles. Nirvana spawned imitators trying to make it big by ripping off their style, which sold them 10 million albums to the "alt-rock" crowd. That doesn't make Nirvana "great." Never mind that R.E.M. helped shaped the sound of the 80's and 90's, that they influenced groups like Sonic Youth and The Pixies. Let an incredibly artistic rock band like R.E.M fall by the wayside while you canonize Nirvana which only spawned braindead imitators and legions of cokehead teens trying to be "alt." (despite the fact that Kurt Cobain himself often cited R.E.M. as an influence) And don't even get me started on the most overrated artist of all time, Bob Dylan. Nice lyrics, but his music and voice were nothing special at all in my opinion. Other glaring issues Cream, Guns N' Roses, Black Sabbath and AC/DC below AEROSMITH and THE SEX PISTOLS?!? Prince beats out the Who. And omfg, another piece drooling over The Clash. The Clash are good, but they're (again) grossly overrated. Sickeningly. Much like The Doors. I really enjoy the Doors, they're pretty kick-ass, but in this list they're overrated. And most glaringly, QUEEN didn't even make the fucking list. |

Legacy of what? And since when do Public Enemy, Run DMC, Madonna, since when do any of them have anything to do with rock n' roll? Other than trying to be Aerosmith?
