Pages 60-61 Q/Mojo Queen Classic Edition, makes a conjectured POSSIBLE point as to why MTV stopped playing Queen's videos...besides the story we all know about the "horror" over the band in drag in IWTBF, in that the top brass at MTV in a sense blacklisted Queen in retaliation to the lyrics of the song Radio Ga GA which took issue with MTV emphasizing the importance of visuals...OVER MUSIC. Page 60 First Quote is about why Roger wrote Radio Ga Ga, Roger quote: "I wrote it after watching alot of MTV in the States", Taylor recalled, "and it seemed to me that there was far too much emphasis on a band's visual image and not enough on the music." Pgae 61 Then writer James McNair says quote "MTV critical or not..." and later McNair says quote "Worse than that, any hopes of the album's next single turning the tide in the US were soon dashed when MTV banned the video for I Want To Break Free. Did they genuinely believe that the sight of Queen dressed as female characters inspired by the venerable British soap Coronation Street would corrupt America's youth? Or had the stations bigwigs perhaps caught wind of Radio Ga Ga's blunt critique of MTV and decided to punish the band? Whatever the reasoning, MTV refused to show the video; a decision that was partly responsible for deterring Queen from ever playing the US again." |

Most of us have read it and don't need reminding, and those that haven't probably can't be bothered. So why don't you read all of it and then post one big topic bringing up all the issues in the magazine you feel just have to be discussed? |

I don't even know what is "Q/Mojo Queen Classic Edition". |

Well, Queen are too good for the MTV. It's just crap on the channel anyway. I totally agree on the quote from Roger, the music should be the most important thing, not the f....ng way they act or dress (visual image). I think it's a good idea analyzing the magazine. Haven't read it yet, but it will appear in my mailbox soon. |
Roy Queen 06.04.2005 16:29 |
yep, MTV = Crap... It's only one music channel that playes good music, not that american rubbish, and that is VH1, and VH1 Classic |
rachael mae. 06.04.2005 17:25 |
I hardly ever see MTV play music.. normally crap like Pimp My Ride and Room raiders |
Vad 06.04.2005 18:06 |
It's not a musical network anymore. Now they just broadcast shows about weird stupid people doing stupid stuff and trying to make kids believe that all that crap is cool. |
XcessQueen 06.04.2005 18:11 |
I was RAISED by MTV! But I STOPED watching it in 1996. |

MTV also banned Body Language in 1982. The video for Break Free was classic. It's OK for eMptyTV to show Britney and Madonna lesbo lip locking but still have a thing against videos like Break Free and Body Language. The more things change, the more they stay the same! |

Don’t think that is a “praise song” about video clips. The first video shown on MTV Europe was "Money for Nothing", by Dire Straits, which starts with the line "I want my MTV". Two songs with tongue-in-cheek humor not so much unlike Radio Gaga, I would say. |

Bush involving us in the war with Iraq. I guess sometimes....the FIRST artist that does SOMETHING NEW...is the first to get flack over it...before everyone else jumps on the bandwagon and makes it "acceptable". |

It seems so. (Although in our case, "Video killed the radio star" was there first of course. 1979 or something?) |

I think all political parties suck! I got put on FBI watch list for listening to my father's Republican agenda at a time when I needed to grieve the death of my grandmother and also my mother almost died twice at the time and my grandfather had cancer. Seeing Kerry bash the military(my father was US Army 30 plus years, oldest bro was Navy, older sis was Air Force, uncle in Army Reserve and another in FEMA(which is US Emergency)) caused me to go off the deep end and I sent Kerry a few scathing emails which had figures of speech not worth repeating. Whilst I was in my native Massachusetts with family all summer, the CIA/FBI had a warrant for my arrest but my dad got me out of it citing my form of autism(Aspergers Syndrome) and being in a military family combined with tragedies I was dealing with. My friends afterwards told me to just stay away, my response was "if it were my choice, I'd see any member of Pink Floyd as President, unfortunate they are from England!" Now, politics are a JOKE IMHO!Tipsy Dino wrote:I agree and yeah I was thinking about "Video Killed The Radio Star". Vh1>MTV If you passed 2nd grade math you'd understand. Vh1 is good even though they show pictures of freddie and no videos(ok so they played borhap once). NEVER SCANDAL!!!!! |

Excuse me...going off the topic folks... I am NOT a fan of Green Day... In fact I hate their music too. I was using them in a comparison/analogy about how some artists (example, Queen, Dixie Chicks)get blacklisted or railroaded due to their artistic ideas, politics, concepts, what the hell..and other artists (example Greenday) do NOT but instead get praised and get even more airplay, record sales, etc...don't you guys think before you type...oh the agony! Back to topic....hellooooooo. |
doremi 15.04.2005 12:56 |
Yeah real big of MTV, play Queen's videos, after and because Freddie died. Too little, too late, and only to reap ratings off of the timing of his death. Real nice of MTV, whose politics and blacklisting took a backseat to those all important timed RATINGS and MONEY, reaped off of Freddie's grave. |

arlene wrote: Real nice of MTV, whose politics and blacklistingYou know, there are more MTVs on this planet than just American MTV. There is UK MTV, Holland MTV, German MTV... During the period when I watched some of those (1989.-1995.) they normally played Queen videos... (But, all that is nothing compared to VH1 - people who watch it tell me that VH1 plays Queen every day!) |
