Christopher Eccleston has quit his role in the new version of Doctor Who. He said that he didnt want to be typecast as an actor. More info here link |
Mr Mercury 31.03.2005 06:27 |
Yeah, I would imagine that he'd be gutted. |
Taylor-Mayed 31.03.2005 10:32 |
Yesterday was a funny old day. This time of the afternoon, we were all doing cartwheels as Jane Tranter announced a second series and a Christmas Special... Then eight hours later the news comes out that Eccleston's definitely not coming back for a second season. Bollocks. I mean, he'd been cagey about it whenever he was asked in recent interviews, but I always hoped and expected that he would do at least two years in the role - I'm also amazed he wasn't in a cast-iron contract for a second were the option to be taken up by the BBC. I'm gutted, I really am. It's devastating, in as much as a TV show can be anyway - he was so good in the role, he'd put such a stamp on it after only one episode. And that it should come out so soon really takes the shine off of the remaining twelve - what's the point in getting to know and like the Ninth Doctor when he's going to be gone so soon? Last night it was terrible, I had that awful post-England-penalty-shoot-out-defeat feeling. I'm rather more in perspective about it today, but it still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth. It seems the workload and press exposure were just too much for him, although it seems there may have been murkier factors at work, too - the drama department's 15% budget cuts and Eccleston's salary may have had something to do with it, but that's pure speculation on my part. There are pluses of course - a second season, woo-hoo! But I dearly wish Chris would have been in it... The indications are that he will at least be back for the Christmas special, so we'll have a proper regeneration story, which could be pretty spectacular. I'm disappointed for all the kids who've come on board with the new series though, to be losing 'their' Doctor so soon. At least Billie will be staying on as Rose, providing some continuity of character for them. Still, it looks as if my prediction of David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor from back in the 'Doctor Who' thread here is going to come true. I do wish it hadn't been for another few years though. |
PieterMC 31.03.2005 10:59 |
That's a shame. I have not even seen the first episode yet.... |
rachael mae. 31.03.2005 11:00 |
I love David Tennant.. I think he'll be fabulous.. |
Flashman 31.03.2005 11:21 |
In interviews, he always sems a bit embarrassed by the whole thing - perhaps he's watched the later episodes? He's been a pretty naff Doctor thus far anyroad - Captain Kirk would have just twatted that plastic thing instead of waiting for that bit of totty to save him. The new chap they have earmarked for the part looks much more the ticket. |
Mr Mercury 31.03.2005 11:37 |
Actually I think that Flashman himself should get the job - and what a job he'd make of it no doubt |

"And that it should come out so soon really takes the shine off of the remaining twelve - what's the point in getting to know and like the Ninth Doctor when he's going to be gone so soon?" Agreed. I'm fairly pissed off. Had the news emerged 3 months from now I may have been in a more forgiving mood. I was convinced late last night that it was an early April Fool's joke. |

Carrots Of The Piratebean 31.03.2005 17:02 |
I go for that too - Flashman for the new Doctor Who!!!!!!! |
John S Stuart 31.03.2005 17:15 |
Flashy as the new Dr Who: (In best Paul Whitehose impersonation) "Who me, Flashy, the third Earl of Bath, in the ladies dormitaries, at three in the morning?" |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 02:24 |
He'd have a fair way to go to catch up with some of Tom's... erm... 'exploits'. |
brian_may_wannabe 01.04.2005 09:10 |
I've heard that actor David Tennant is going to the tenth Doctor. Hope there is going to be a regeneration scene - unlike the Paul McGann regenerating into Christopher Eccleston (which we never saw). |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 09:57 |
Indeed. I point once again to my prediction of a few weeks back! ;-) And yes, all signs are that Eccleston will be appearing in the Christmas Special, which will it seems be the regeneration story. If nothing else, with RTD at the helm we should get something fairly dramatic, probably the best regeneration since Androzani. |

You should've put a bet on that bloke from cassanova being the new Dr ,Taylor_Mayed . You would have cleaned up ! |

"If nothing else, with RTD at the helm we should get something fairly dramatic, probably the best regeneration since Androzani." I've always preferred Logopolis! "Caves of..." had an excellent regeneration scene though! |
bigc 01.04.2005 11:34 |
I wasnt sure about Logopolis adric was in it...urgh enough said |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 12:01 |
"You should've put a bet on that bloke from cassanova being the new Dr ,Taylor_Mayed . You would have cleaned up !" Well, I think it was pretty obvious really when you consider that... 1) He's a Who fan, and has appeared in many of Big Finish's audio CDs, including their 'Dalek Empire' spin-off series. He also narrated the 'A New Dimension' documentary shown last Saturday on BBC One. 2) He's worked with both Executive Producers, Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner, on "Casanova", and very recently too. 3) He's become something of a 'BBC face' recently, starring in "He Knew He Was Right", "Blackpool", "Casanova" and tomorrow in the live "Quatermass Experiment". 5) I know nothing of Harry Potter at all, so correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd guess that being 'Barty Crouch Jr' whoever he may be, will give him kudos with the kids. 6) He's a damn fine actor! Also, Russell is now going around saying the whole thing was planned from the start... link tm_objectid=15356540&method=full&siteid=50082&headline=dr- who-actor-s-departure-will-unfold-on-screen--name_page.html Oh, and "Logopolis" better than "Androzani" ? Pah! "Logopolis" isn't bad, in fact it's very good, but come on... "The Caves of Androzani" man! Still, each to their own... ;-) Anyway, there are normal people watching, we shouldn't really be talking about this stuff. |

Taylor_Made - is Terrance Dicks still alive ? sorry if that sounds weird .Also how many Dr Who stories did he write ? |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 14:19 |
Dicks is indeed still alive - he'll be seventy this year I believe. He was at the Cardiff press premiere of the first episode of the new series early last month, and gave it a resounding thumbs-up. He officially wrote four stories on his own, plus one ("The War Games", 1969) co-written with Malcolm Hulke. His four credited solo efforts are "Robot" (1974, Tom Baker's first story), "Horror of Fang Rock" (1977), "State of Decay" (1980) and finally "The Five Doctors" (1983). In addition, he re-wrote much of Brian Hayles' script for "The Seeds of Death" (1969) in his then capacity as Assistant Script Editor - he didn't get an on-screen credit for this, however (although he did on the back cover of the 1980s video release). In 1976 he wrote the original script for "The Brain of Morbius", but the Script Editor, Robert Holmes, re-wrote large chunks of it, which annoyed Dicks at the time (he later calmed down, as he and Holmes were friends) and insisted that it go out under 'some bland pseudonym' - hence its transmission under the name of 'Robin Bland'. As well as this he novelised a *ton* of TV Doctor Who stories for Target Books, and in the last decade and a half has written several original DW novels. I think he's got another one due out from BBC Books sometime later this year, actually. Hope that answers your question! :-) |

That more than answers my Question , thanks ! |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 16:28 |
Happy to help! :-) Now, if anyone else has any questions in this "Ask Paul about Doctor Who" thread... ;-) |
agneepath! 11994 01.04.2005 16:37 |
still think Logopolis is better than androzani... although I may have to watch it on dvd again! |

Taylor-Mayed wrote: Happy to help! :-) Now, if anyone else has any questions in this "Ask Paul about Doctor Who" thread... ;-)Ok then, Question one. How many series' have there been and roughly how many episodes have been shown? Question two. What was the name of Roy Castle's character in one of the films? |
Taylor-Mayed 01.04.2005 18:28 |
1) The new series is the 27th series to be made. Up to and including "Rose" (last week's episode), that's 697 episodes. 2) A vastly inferior version of Ian Chesterton, as originally played much better by the original TV actor William Russell. :-) |

Cheers Paul, thats real Doctor Who style trainspotting for ya :) |

Dracula wrote: Taylor_Made - is Terrance Dicks still alive ? sorry if that sounds weird .Also how many Dr Who stories did he write ?He's still alive as far as I'm aware because he wrote a Doctor Who novel recently. He wrote (as far as I can remember) The Brain of Morbius [under a pseudonym], Robot, The Five Doctors, State of Decay. That's all I can remember for the old stories. I can't remember how many novels he wrote - he's written about 200 Doctor Who novels. |
