lol spooky, i just added this article to another thread re. scottish dates. Like of Barrowlands and the Garage are defo too small really but Ingleston or going along the REM road would be great failing an Secc date. |
Nightjar_ 20.03.2005 17:14 |
the Barrowlands would be AMAZING, bowie has played it!!!! Anyway I'm still looking forward to Newcastle and Manchester, but a home gig is always special |
MissyMercury 20.03.2005 17:24 |
Agreed Barrowlands would be fantastic but think they'd have to do a couple nites there, not entirely sure of the capacity mind you, but with the probs getting just one night organised... |
iljaiya 21.03.2005 07:59 |
They won't play at Barrowlands, it's too small (1900 seats). Here are some other alternatives: Glasgow Braehead Arena 5200 Edinburgh Ingliston Royal Highland Centre 5000 Aberdeen AECC 7000 Maybe Glasgow Academy but I reckon it's also too small (2200) |
fudgeukraine 21.03.2005 20:54 |
Personally, I hope they play Edinburgh - Playhouse or even Murrayfield. Or even (being completely insane) playing Stirling Universities Students Union again (ok - so I'm Based there!) after the 1974 gig where there was a riot, that 3rd encore wouldn't be minded today!!! Apart from that - I can't wait to see what Brian's reply will be, knowing Brians Soapbox, he'll probably moan again about 'this moron' because he knows that Billy made a great point! |
gnomo 22.03.2005 03:42 |
... I think the journalist is missing a point here: with a couple of exceptions, for this tour QP selected venues with a capacity above 10000, up to 17000 in some cases, which means virtually all the venues he mentioned are below the requisites... FWIW -- Gnomo |
Óli Gneisti Sóleyjarson 22.03.2005 06:52 |
Well the initial point this journalist made was that Queen had snubbed Scotland but in this article he makes it known that they tried to set up a gig there (though he says they didn't try hard enough). It's easier said than done to organize a tour like this so I'm with Brian here, they did try. |
Teo_torriate04 22.03.2005 07:53 |
Sorry, but didn't Brian say that they hadn't found a suitable venue YET ! That means they're still looking and they will play Scotland. No doubt this sad Journo will claim the credit when they do. This is all much ado about nothing. Brian said at the outset that they would play Scotland in the Autumn, explaning the reasons for the delay and apologising to the fans. It's one thing for a venue to say a hypothetical 'yes' they are available to a journalist out to score points, but quite another to actually negotiate contracts with tour promotors. |
iljaiya 22.03.2005 09:51 |
Yeah maybe you're lucky enough to get an outside concert if they come up with something soon. Maybe at one of these venues: Glasgow Glasgow Green Glasgow Bellahouston Park Glasgow Ibrox Park Glasgow Hampden Park Edinburgh Murray Field |
MissyMercury 22.03.2005 14:57 |
Ibrox...Hampden...Murrayfield..would be great too but capacity of those is well over the 10-12,000 |
Mr Mercury 22.03.2005 15:05 |
There is also Rugby Park, Kilmarnock (Elton John is playing there) |
kohuept 22.03.2005 15:08 |
This guy sounds like some people on this board - expecting Queen to run their lives around what HE wants them to do. What a pointless opinionated piece of journalism! GO BRIAN!!! |
iljaiya 22.03.2005 15:53 |
'Ibrox...Hampden...Murrayfield..would be great too but capacity of those is well over the 10-12,000' Yeah well so are Hyde Park, Goffertpark, Rheinenergy Stadium and Estadio Restelo.... |

i sent this billy sloan an e mail! he had a right go at me in his reply lol! |
Carrots Of The Piratebean 22.03.2005 19:59 |
Go on tell us what he said!! Please!!! |
Mr Mercury 22.03.2005 20:02 |
Yeah tell us what he said |
newcastle 86! 16483 22.03.2005 21:20 |
well i was arguing the point that the venues he mentioned (as he did in the e mail!) werent big enough, and he was blah blah about the fact that (queen) had contacted the secc only to find the night they wanted was booked............. and subsequently they havent bothered to re arrange, so ive bacically told him to be patient lol, also he was on about rem, who had to cancel a gig thre and are actually doin a gig (at a loss) at some other venue. anyway, the upshot is, ive mailed him again ha ha! saying be patient as theres lots of other countries wanna see the show, and is it just his Scottish "island" mentality getting in the way! he he! ill keep u posted! |
newcastle 86! 16483 22.03.2005 21:24 |
not that i dont like the scots the piece was very localized to the point of "fuck you us against the world" |

Cheers for that. Actually when I first read Billy's reply I thought he had put his foot in it for us ever seeing them play here. Dunno why tho.. |
April Lady 23.03.2005 06:27 |
Personally I think they should be playing the village hall in my remote village as the 100 mile round trip to the nearest gig is way too far. Grow up Billy Sloan. |
dbruce 23.03.2005 06:59 |
I actually agree with Billy Sloan on this one. Scottish fans have been left totally in the dark as to the fact that a gig was even being organised. It was over 2 months ago Scotland was mentioned for autumn dates, due to PR's solo tour. As this has been cancelled, and Dublin now has dates announced, I think we all assumed Scotland would be announced next. I was pissed off with Brian's initial name calling response, and I can see why Billy has responded as he has. Sometimes Brian reverts to the schoolyard-bully mentality that he is so open about standing up against... David |
kohuept 23.03.2005 10:04 |
Remember - what Brian wrote was not an actual response. It was a "rant" (I think he would admit to that) on his soapbox. Do you think the band should just up-and-do whatever any citizen of any country wants them to do? |
MissyMercury 23.03.2005 15:09 |
'Ibrox...Hampden...Murrayfield..would be great too but capacity of those is well over the 10-12,000' Yeah well so are Hyde Park, Goffertpark, Rheinenergy Stadium and Estadio Restelo.... True, but the catchment area for those is larger |
man on the prowl 23.03.2005 15:14 |
well done newcastle 86, take every oppertunity you can to stuff it into mr sloan, he's nothing but an over oppinionated freeloader, i too took the oppertunity to send him an email, here it is with his reply:- Subject: brian may article Dear Mr Sloan, I think that the article in question was highly uncalled for and very badly researched, if you had done any kind of research into the up and coming QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS tour you would have found out that QUEEN have no intention of "snubbing" scotland. Brian May stated that QUEEN could not arrange a suitable venue because of the short time scales in organising the tour, basically the SECC could fit them in but as it's such a crap venue for a rock band of QUEEN'S calibre they decided against it.However, i do agree that there are more suitable venues on hand such as some of the SPL stadiums that Elton John is appearing at this summer and not the Barrowlands or the Carling Academy as was stupidly suggested in your article. These venues have nowhere near the capacity required for a band like QUEEN. QUEEN + PAUL RODGERS will be here on tour but i can't see you getting your statutory "free" ticket from Mr May and company, he'll just be another person that considers you a freeloader and hanger on not to mention a pain in the arse who should retire gracefuly. yours hopefuly A few points. 1. Scotland was ALWAYS a stronghold for Queen. They played the Apollo on numerous occasions in the Seventies not to mention other venues mentioned. For them NOT to have a gig here is a nonsense. Scotland should be a priority ... not an afterthought. 2. You accuse me of ill research. I fear you suffer from that a wee bit yourself. You clearly have a problem with the SECC. Thousands of others don't. The SECC isn't the perfect venue ... but it's no better/worse than the MEN Arena in Manchester, Newcastle Arena, Birmingham NEC or Wembley Arena. All venues on the forthcoming Queen tour. In fact, I'd argue that the SECC is far superior to any of those mentioned simply because Hall 4 is a more intimate space. Get a ticket for the back row of the SECC and compare it with a seat in the back row of any of those venues. See which one gives the best/closest view of the act. You're talking through a hole in your head saying they "decided against the SECC because it's such a crap venue". It's good enough for Eric Clapton, Kylie Minogue, U2, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Williams, Oasis ... I could go on. So you're talking nonsense. Paul Rodgers has even played the venue himself. He opened for Status Quo in Hall 4 a few years back - and went down a storm incidentally. 3. If Queen REALLY wanted to play Scotland they could pull out all the stops and fix a date. True fans don't care about all the fancy stage props etc. which make up the stage set for an arena show. They'd be happy just to see the group on stage. So they could play a couple of nights at the Academy or Barrowland simply to ensure Scotland does not miss out. You're strangely quiet on my suggestions they could return to Ingliston. Now, there's a real crap venue ... but 8500 fans would put up with it if it meant the difference between seeing them and not seeing them. R.E.M. decided to play the tent on Glasgow Green instead of cancelling their postponed SECC show. It's actually costing the US group more money to do that. But they felt so strongly about not disappointing fans it was worth it. Queen could do the same. Again, it's not ideal ... but if it's good enough for R.E.M., The Stone Roses and Radiohead - who've also played a tent on Glasgow Green - it should be good enough for Queen. 4. The article in my column had a bit of a selfish streak. You'll find it hard to believe but I actually would LOVE to see Queen here. I've never missed a Queen show in Scotland over the years. I wa |
