Sorry to correct you, but that session on July 31st 1967 was at Regent Sound, not Abbey Road. How do I know ? I was there, playing bass guitar (and piano) as part of the Left Handed Marriage. Anyway, it's good that people are listening to them even after 38 years. John Frankel |

Thanks for the correction, as i stated in an earlier post, i was going by information supplied on the disc. Which may or may not have been correct. |

How do I know ? I was there, playing bass guitar (and piano) as part of the Left Handed Marriage. So John, Bill Richards claims you guys were in Regent Sound July 28th - and you 31st. Was this a protracted three day session, or is Bill's memory starting to go? Do you still have your "She Was Once My Friend" 7” edit acetate, or, has that too been lost to the passage of time? |
johnf 23.03.2005 03:00 |
John S Stuart, Good resume, and most of it exactly right. May I point you to this article which might also help. link. On our Crazy Chain CD, Bill does say 31/7/67 so I don't know where July 28th came from - it was definitely the monday as it was the day after my 19th birthday on the sunday. Bill is a year older than me so his memory is probably going ! The last time I saw the "She Was Once My Friend" 7” edit acetate, was in about 1968. Bill had them all so he might still. |
John S Stuart 23.03.2005 07:17 |
johnf: Thanks for the reply. My information came from personally interviewing Bill Richards, but, considering the event was the day after your 19th birthday, I guess that would be reason enough to sear it into your memory. As for the article you mention link. It is actually plagerised from "Record Collector" magazine features - ironically - it was me who wrote them! (I notice also, that your letter of correction addressed to the magazine, is also included). Unfortunately, one does not recieve a lot of credit (if any) when "re-published" on internet sites. Glad that you enjoyed the article, and hope you enjoy your visits to "Queenzone". John S. Stuart |

John S. Stuart, I enjoyed your reply - I didn't realize I was pointing you to your own article. I enjoyed your reply - I didn't realize I was pointing you to your own article. Just one thing to add to this forum. I haven't seen Brian since that session in 1967 - we all went our separate ways, mostly to different universities and we didn’t meet up again as a group. My memories of Brian are of a very talented and, I hate to say it, very nice boy. I thought I was quite good in 1967 – Brian was in a different class even then. I suppose my one claim to fame was showing him the correct chord in the Beatles ‘ No reply’ (G6 when he was playing a Gmaj7). |

You don't happen to have some old photos to share, Mr. Frankel? :) |

Johnf: "I suppose my one claim to fame was showing him the correct chord in the Beatles ‘ No reply’ (G6 when he was playing a Gmaj7)." Thanks for that - I will add it to my bank of trivia. Who knows - you may even see that snippet in "print" someday - but I will make sure that you are credited - or better still, write it as IF it was a personal interview! My e-mail address is available on this site, so if you ever feel the need to have "your story" told from your point of view - drop me a mail sometime! |
Two Sharp Pencils 23.03.2005 09:22 |
johnf, may I ask which other songs did LHM use to reharse apart from No Reply? And if it´s not too much to ask, do recordings from such sessions exist(ed)? Not that I will ask you to share them, just to learn something else. :) |

Johnf, thanx for the bites of info..infact any stories about "The left handed marriage" no matter how trivial would be greatly appreciated. cheers Matt |

It is amazing that anyone has even heard of the Left Handed Marriage, especially after all these years. The best notes are those written in the Crazy Chain CD but I can add a few bits. I was the outsider of the group, as the rest had been at school together (including Brian). Bill had needed someone else who could play the guitar - that was fine, but all I had was a six string Hofner and a wonderful 12 string. Bill thus decided to play the 12 string and I ended up playing a bad bass on the Hofner. The result was the first album being slightly thin on instruments ! We recorded that album at the beginning of 1967 and I then went off to the States for 6 months in what they call today a 'gap year'. Because of that, I was not available for the Abbey Road sessions. Bill kept writing to me telling me of the progress. I don't want to make this post too long, but I am a sad person and I have kept the letters. This is a quote from one on 29/03/67 after he mentioned someone called Brian. "In case you're wondering, Brian is the amazing, dancing, singing, psychodelic (sic) lead guitarist whom we have on loan from the illustrious 1984 of Imperial College. If you were around, we’d have a full group”. Another letter on 10/05/67 says: “By the way, our lead guitarist (Brian) (Good bloke but bit of a dirty devil) thought Jenny is fantastic which created a few problems. Never mind, he plays like a angel !” and my favourite part “Brian likes your bass runs in “Happiness is u-shaped” (off the first LP). When we all rehearsed together, it was always Bill’s songs. Sometime I went to Brian’s house in Twickenham to rehearse just with him. After a few minutes we got bored with LHM stuff and got on to the Beatles – that’s how the G6 came up. That’s enough for today. |

Wow... what can I say? Thanks for sharing these precious memories! These kind of posts are bringing these boards a new life. :) |

Thanks for posting this, Johnf, I am sure Brian would enjoy reading it, too. And you are not sad at all keeping your letters, I have kept all letters I was sent since I was 14 and I glad I still have them. |
