One of the best intro ever made by any rock & Roll band, but at the same time is one of the worst Queen song. I love the intro by Freddie, so inspiring, vocally it sounds perfect but when Roger starts singing he kills the song and my mood. |
LowSammy 08.03.2005 22:06 |
I see what you're saying. I like it, though. |
Gunpowder Gelatine 09.03.2005 02:29 |
I love that song, but it did take a while to grow on me. I think Roger and Freddie sound great together, especially since you only usually hear them together on live recordings. |

Thats just me though. |

I personally like Roger's voice, but I know a lot of others that are annoyed by it. If I pop in "The Game" while we have friends over, these casual listeners love the whole album....except for Rock It and Sail Away Sweet Sister.... They always say "Where is Freddie"? My one friend, who is a huge Led Zep fan, who would probably rank Queen as his 4th or 5th favorite band always whines to me "Why in the hell is Freddie not singing 3 or 4 songs on News Of The World, which otherwise be a very near perfect album"? The Rock It intro is great.....another song Fred should have sung. I don't mind Roger on some songs...."Love with my Car" , "Drowse"...etc.. But when you are in a band with Freddie, there is no reason why Roger or Brian should have a huge catalog of songs they sang. There is a reason why McCartney sang 44 of the Beatles hits.....and Ringo sang 4 songs total. Same rule applies here. |
Lester Burnham 09.03.2005 09:09 |
I think Ringo sang more than 4 songs. He got to sing one song per album, except for "Let It Be". I think it's fair to Roger and Brian that they should sing their own songs. Even Keith Richards and Bill Wyman got to sing their own songs, fer crying out loud. |
deleted user 09.03.2005 13:36 |
I love most of Brian and Roger's songs. It's not like they sang EVERY song they wrote anyway... |
Leppar 09.03.2005 13:40 |

i like it, i think its a pretty good song, the intro is good but i like the beat the best |

Inu Yasha (a.k.a. Lum's Stormtrooper) wrote: I didn't know that. But I don't listen to the Rolling Stones either (very rarely)Indeed. Also, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle, and Keith Moon all sang, and not even all on their own songs! George Harrison sang a song by John Lennon, Dave Davies occasionally sings not only his songs, but also Ray Davies', and even Ronnie Lane and Ron Wood sing on a few of The Faces' recordings. It's called diversity, people - I'd be bored stiff if Freddie sang all the songs. I'd much rather Roger sang 'Ride The Wild Wind', or Brian sang 'Who Wants To Live Forever', as it adds a nice bit of diversity. Who cares if you've got one of the greatest lead vocalists in the world in a band - time after time, you want a bit of change in the music you listen to. |
Scott_Mercury 09.03.2005 22:55 |
The difference is this: Example 1: if Ringo Starr sings a Beatles tune, then you have.. Vocals & Drums: Ringo Rhythm Guitar: Lennon Bass: McCartney Lead Gutar: Harrison In Example 2, lets take "Drowse" for example, a Roger tune, then you have: Vocals & Drums: Taylor Bass: Deacon Guitar, Slide guitar: May ...and, hmmm..something is missing?? What could it be?? There's no piano in this song, nor a back-up vocal.... so let me get this straight: The greatest rock singer in the world (based on 3 different fan and critic polls that I know of) is standing over in the corner whacking his pud. AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Aeosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd..etc..etc have all made into the rock-n-roll with one person singing. |
Lester Burnham 09.03.2005 23:30 |
I actually think there is a piano in 'Drowse'. Regarding 'Don't Pass Me By': Vocals & drums: Ringo Starr Bass guitar & piano: Paul McCartney Violin: some session musician 'Long Long Long': Vocals & acoustic guitar: George Harrison Bass guitar, piano & organ: Paul McCartney Drums: Ringo Starr 'Yesterday': Vocals & acoustic guitar: Paul McCartney Strings: quartet Big deal. Your point is moot. I'm sure if Freddie didn't like it, he would've raised a fuss. edit: Why haven't you complained over the lack of Brian on several songs? He doesn't appear on 'My Melancholy Blues', 'Seaside Rendezvous', 'Cool Cat', or 'One Year Of Love'. Or the lack of John on 'Fight From The Inside' and 'Sheer Heart Attack'? Or Roger on half the songs from Hot Space that have drum machines on them? The way all of Queen's songs were recorded were done for a reason. If there was something they didn't like about it, it would've either been redone or shelved completely - just like with any band. |

Lester, I understand all members can't be involved 100% in every song (project). However, in the real world we know that the average listener will take much more note of a Queen song that is missing Freddie, then one that is missing any other member. If you have a song on an album that Brian or Roger sang, its really not Queen..... its "well, Brian has this tune of HIS that "he" wants to do...it won't be released as a single, but its kind of catchy". The ever so modest Freddie (he actual was) probably told Brian or Roger "Hell darling, you sound better than me, just sing the damn thing". And I don't have a problem with this.... I really don't. Here's where things get tricky If I pop in Queen's "The Game"....many passive listeners I have over to my house will comment on the music I play. The Game has 2 songs that I find to be very similar, both of which are 2 of Brian's 3 songs on "The Game"....they are: 1) Sail Away Sweet Sister 2) Save Me Both songs I love, both songs sound great....Freddie is the pianist on both songs, Freddie sings "Save Me", Brian sings "Sail Away Sweet Sister" (except the middle where Fred does a quick Brian impersonation). When this cd plays, and its on random...."Save me" will come on, and passive listeners will say "This is Queen too, wow, this is a really good song". "Sail Away Sweet Sister" comes on.....and everyones like, "What's wrong with his voice?" Then I have to explain that its "the guitar player" singing this one....not Freddie. The conclusion is always the same with everyone from my mother to my best friends girl.... they say: IT DOESN'T SOUND BAD, BUT WHY DIDN'T FREDDIE SING IT?? Keep in mind folks....Queen was not a band like the Beatles that had 2 great singers (Lennon & McCartney) and one very good singer (Harrison) and one acceptable singer (Ringo). Queen has one astoundingly excellent singer (Mercury) and 2 others that are good (Taylor & May). I can deal with the number of Queen songs that are sung by Brian and Roger, as it isn't too many..... but anymore would be too much for me. All of my friends claim Innuendo as their favorite.... now we aren't talking about knowledgeble music dorks like ourselves....we are talking about average Joe Blow listeners that don't care the members names, or who played what. I asked one friend why Innuendo was his favorite of all the Queen stuff I let him borrow...his answer: "Thats the one where that really awesome singer sings every song...didn't you say he died a few years ago?" |
ryancoke 10.03.2005 02:08 |
That's another reason why Queen's so great. 3 of the 4 members can sing. WHY is that so hard to understand? To quote Jim Morrison: "People are strange". |
The King Of Rhye 10.03.2005 04:00 |
What I thought was funny, when I was playing some Brian-sung Queen track....I forget which....and my brother over heard it and asked me who the guy doing a bad Freddie Mercury impression was....... keeping in mind my brother dont know a damn about Queen.... |
Scott_Mercury 10.03.2005 21:44 |
King of Rye... I've had that before... I was playing "Sleeping on the sidewalk" one night, and a co-worker said... "Don't tell me, now you are listening to Queen cover bands now"? |

I see what you mean. It isn't one of my favorite Queen songs, that's for sure. But for some reason, everytime I hear it, which ironically, I've been doing a lot of lately, it seems to get me into a better mood. Sorta lively and energetic, if you will. But that does not mean that it is the best song. No way. Cheers |

I actually hate the intro to this song, but like it once Roger starts. |

I love Rogers voice on this song. It seems to fit imo. |
Farlander 12.03.2005 11:19 |
Actually, I think I would like the intro better if not for that odd effect on Freddie's voice. Some sort of chorus effect or something, if I remember correctly. |
Sonia Doris 12.03.2005 11:42 |
I love Roger's voice. How can people trash his voice? It's a wonderful voice. Dont wanna see anyone say bad things about it, or else you shall experience real soniac anger!!! |

this is a pointless argument where would queen be without the vocal mix on songs like Bo Rhap, STLove etc? the reason these songs worked was because ALL of the vocals used were excellent (in their own style) ...and that quite simply is WHY Roger and Brian sung on different songs - the fact that THEY didn't do lead vox on ALL their own songs speaks for itself - there were some songs that the band felt worked with FM's vocals and there were some they felt worked better with the writer singing ....and who is anyone on here to say they got it wrong? FM took lead on ALL (i think) of the single releases - so the mass-market had familiarity to feel comfortable with but albums were places to flex a little muscle and do what THEY wanted - and generally (HS aside) it worked |

I love the song - Roger is the right choice for the song. |

Rock It was great for my old fraternity parties. Always had the floor hopping, and it was a way of sneaking in a Queen song other than AOBTD and CLTCL without too many people knowing otherwise. As to having different LVs, it worked for The Beatles, Styx, and early Journey, and was yet another formula that worked damn well. Pity that they discarded that approach later on. |
