Yes, I have seen the Live at the Bowl DVD. He does seem to come out better in the mix on the DVD than on some of the live albums. Wembley on cd was disappointing for that.
That's the one reason I like bootlegs. You get to hear John's bass and Brian and Roger's vocals more depending on the quality of the recording of course.

there's also the small fact of how the accoustics of certain auditoria change once they are filled with people...the stuff probably sounds totally different in rehearsal
also different venues affect the sound too...UFO's Strangers In The Night was recorded at two separate gigs and you can tell which was which - by listening to the bass and drums
