I don't post forums a lot...and rarely contribute to disscussions because you're all so firey tempered and witty :) I take back all...as i might get some jockstrap saying we're not all like that! Anyway,I remeber reading a few posts a while back about the worst Queen songs. Drowse popped up in quite a few peoples answers and i don't get it man! The first seconds of the song when i heard it mad me go WOW. I thought maybe some of you didn't like it as much because its quite a contrast to the other songs on A Day At The Races(fuck your abbreviations) :) i think its class especially at the end where he's taking to him self saying oh i think ill be Clint eastwood...Jimi Hendrix was good...now who esle do i like? I can't help smiling! I find nothing bad with Rog's song either...fine...he's not writing Bohemian Rhapsody but he is the cool cat!...you cannot judge him just because he writes macho? well i dont know...maybe not macho songs. Just different. Everyone knows that all four of them were completly different. So superb song. Simply Roger. Owh Yes! |

If you mean Drowse is a great song, i totally agree with you. |
Farlander 10.02.2005 13:17 |
I used to totally hate Drowse, but now I sometimes put in A Day at the Races just to hear it. It's an aquired taste, I suppose. |

Well said! Drowse is a song that has its very own atmosphere. I like the lyrics as well as the music. I can't imagine Brian or Freddie singing this song, it's very Rogerlike. The song does not rock, nor does it roll (whatever that may be) but to me it is a very unique song. The guitar part sounds like a Hawaiian guitar that is too tired to play some more hoolahoop music after having it played all night long. |
earwig 10.02.2005 13:57 |
I agree as well. I'd go further and say it's Roger's first really good song. e.g. Loser in the End stops Queen II from being 10/10 for me! |
bitesthedust 10.02.2005 13:58 |
Drowse is a great song. Have my eggs poached for breakfast I guess!!!! |

adatr is a perfect album, but my least favorite is 'drowse' it's still good though. |
yamamamia 10.02.2005 14:37 |
I love that song. Reminds me of being over in England somewhere, and enjoying a drink and song with friends. Don't know why, but I'm fond of that style just because it goes on a tangent from everything else. Guess that's why they're so popular, from being diverse. |
Mean Mistreater 10.02.2005 15:05 |
Drowse is Roger's best song! I love it! I remember I was on a flight and I had Drowse playing on my headphones. It fit so perfectly as I looked out my window and passed through the clouds. That song is one reason why ADATR is such the gem that it is. |
thequeenling 10.02.2005 16:09 |
Nicely done :) im glad i found some humans who love it! you'll find meh in a few months randomly commenting on another song :D adios! *salutes* |

Yes Drowse, one of the few songs where Taylor showed depth. And I love the slide, I wished Brian had played w/ one more often. |
Daveboy35 11.02.2005 08:13 |
A cracking song on a cracking album listened to it just yesterday and i also love the slide guitar on the track who knows what the anthlogy will bring up another slide guitar track somewhere. Drowse is a classic song and one of his best. |
SergeantPepperDG 11.02.2005 08:15 |
I love Drowse! It's one of my favorites on ADATR. |
Jjeroen 11.02.2005 08:27 |
Hear, hear! Drowse is absolutely Roger's best song to me. Always loved it and still do. Great vocals, great instruments and a realy special, unique arrangement and structure. |
Farlander 11.02.2005 12:39 |
Really the only problem with it is that it is difficult to make out a lot of the lyrics. |

The slide guitar just elevates the song to a whole different level. Simply sublime. One of my absolute favorite songs done by Queen, let alone Roger. |
David Jones 11.02.2005 13:21 |
I guess its like Marmite, as I think is completley shit. Probably even my worst Queen song. And Teo Torriate after it. No no no... |
deleted user 11.02.2005 14:19 |
No, you must just have a strange taste. How you can not like Drowse AND Teo Torriate really is beyond me... |
David Jones 11.02.2005 14:58 |
Well, I'm not a lover of many of Roger's songs and I hate all those kids singing in Teo Torriate. Its not bad when they do it live for the Japanese. The best bit of the song is the "stairs" guitar reprise at the end.. But thats just me, strange... |

I more preffer Queen songs which are sung by Roger than some Brian's (except '39, SASS, Lost Opportunity and some others). 'Drowse' is good and it's in very special mood. |
deleted user 11.02.2005 18:21 |
I think Drowse is one of Roger's best, I never did really take to I'm In Love With My Car and Radio Gaga, although I like some of his other stuff. Drowse IS special, I find that, unlike his other songs, it really has that unique Queen formula, that makes songs sung by Freddie special. I also think the sleepy sound produced fits in with whole sound of the song, and that it is a masterpiece that only Roger could create! |
Pax 12.02.2005 01:11 |
I absolutely adore Drowse. Its one of the best Roger, and Queen for that matter, songs ever written. Its bloody brilliant |
Freddie-B 12.02.2005 06:55 |
I think if White Man wasn't on A Day At The Races, Drowse would easily be the weakest song on it. I think Roger comes across as a really ace bloke, honestly I do, I just don't like his stuff much. Tenement Funster, Loser In The End, and Fun It are good though, and his later work is brilliant with Queen. |
Monte: Liquorice Years 13.02.2005 05:00 |
i love drowse!!! its so hot and trippy.... thats actually where the 'liquourice years' from my name comes from (strangely enough). my friend kept thinking that he was singing "liquourice years", but it was actually "middle age years". heheh...shes so retarded... but top song!! and its the only song that cheered me up when we moved to the middle of nowhere....i'd walk around, listening to it on my discman and wish i was back in, well at least near, the city...damn the country life!! |
bitesthedust 13.02.2005 06:16 |
Freddie-B wrote: I think if White Man wasn't on A Day At The Races, Drowse would easily be the weakest song on it.don't agree with that - they both are good songs in my view. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy is the worst Queen song ever, as well as on A Day At The Races. |
Roy Queen 01.03.2005 06:24 |
Yes, it's absolutely brilliant! The slide-guitar makes the song to a very special song, a gem! Roger's voice fits perfect to this song, and I think nobody other could sing the song better! The lyrics are so good also, it fits with my life, and that make me think. Short summary: Roger's best song, and one of the Queen-jewels! |
JenPen 01.03.2005 08:33 |
Definately agree that Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy is a much weaker song than Drowse. Drowse is so different from anything else really, and I guess that's what makes it so controversial. But then again, so were Queen. |
Wiley 01.03.2005 11:22 |
I actually like Drowse a lot. It has its own atmosphere, if you know what I mean. I was listening to the ADATR album in my car and wondering what I nice surprise it would be to hear Roger sing it at the new tour (I'll be attending Vienna, Munich and Leipzig, and I'm from Mexico). Just imagine... the show apparently is over... the fans want an encore. The lights dim and that weird guitar sound starts, then we see Roger in front of the stage. It would be great for a "laid back" part of the show, as an intro to similar songs sung by him and Brian, just before the ass kicking finale with The Show Must Go On, Ga Ga, All Right Now, RockYou and Champions (or something like that). Brian could sing Sleeping on the sidewalk, '39 or something like that. What do you think? |
GregM 02.03.2005 14:11 |
I've always loved "Drowse" -- It makes me think of when I was in high school, of all the grandiose dreams my friends and I had, and the part about the pool hall is spot on...We used to play pool and smoke cigarettes in this real dive of a joint for hours every Friday night. The memories of those times, of how we felt, are totally enhanced by listening to that song. I'd love to hear it live, but I don't think Roger EVER sang it in concert. Greg |
