Last night (8th Feb) on a Manchester channel (Channel M) I saw an American shows countdown of the Top 20 greatest artists of the 70's. I saw it from number 9 and guess who was in that list? Queen was number 5! Beaten only by ABBA, The Stones, Elton and Led Zeppelin.
Queen beat Bob Marley, The Who, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, T.Rex, Blondie, KISS etc, etc, etc. The show showed short snipets of interviews with various American music fans and know-it-alls who praised 'Queen's charismatic frontman', how great a guitar player Brian was and Queen's knack of making their shows spectacular and nothing but entertaining. They also played Bicycle Race at the end of the show as the titles rolled.
I've always liked America really...
Number 5 on 70s category... Hmm... Well pretty good, but not so fine actually.
And it's much worth if American people would not forget about Queen, but not only some music experts from TV channel, IMO.
yeah and on a similar countdown here in canada, queen were actually number 3 or 4 i think in a countdown of top 20 artists of the seventies. AND they were beaten by ABBA again too. that's just wrong

By whom, exactly? What a bizarre statement!
Bubblegum, pop, yes. But gay? Not really. For one, they were married to each other for most of their career as a band, you might remember.
Maybe you could make a case of their fan base being pretty pastel these days...
Perhaps you're confusing them with Erasure, who, in a desperate attempt to bring latex and tutus to the masses, sold out with an e.p. of diabolical proportions where they massacred Abba classics to a listless, tinny, gay disco beat? But THAT wasn't Abba's fault... Poor Vince, hasn't been able to afford a new synth since Depeche Mode dumped him on his ass in the early 80's.

Well, ABBA is for sure not gay, and neither was their music. But what is true is that a lot of people (more particularly those tough guys who grew up in the 70s) labeled the band as "gay", or gay appealing.
