Do you think cigarettes had influence on Freddie's voice? |
Serry... 08.02.2005 09:57 |
Yes. As I remember he smoked light and very mild cigarettes, I can search for the title - I have it somewhere in my computer. |
john bodega 08.02.2005 11:56 |
Alcohol and cigarettes are technically a no-no if you want to maintain your voice. Obviously Fred paid no mind to that advice - swigging vodka on his last recording sessions and whatnot. But hey - he was still the best singer around, so yeah |

In one of the books (either Phoebe's or Jim's) it says that he also needed something to play around with his hands, he couldn't keep them still and that was another reason for his smoking. |

He smoked Marlboro most of the time... not quite light and not quite mild! |
My Melancholy Blues 08.02.2005 14:49 |
Certainly he smoked in '80s, otoh he paid some attention to the voice condition in his way...at teatime he poured too much honey into the tea. I read it in a magazine reporting Japanese concerts in '80s. |

Well, that makes me either blind of just full of shit, then! Okay, he didn't smoke Marlboro. Whatever! |

Freddie smoked Marlboro, but not to often. His favourite was Silk Cut, no doubt about that. Maybe he varied with some other brands, I don't know..but SC en Marlboro were his fav brands. But...when did Freddie start smoking? Ha! I don't know. Did he smoke in the seventies, did he start at art school, or in New York ('80,'82) x! |
redyfredy01 10.02.2005 16:05 |
I don't think that freddie really breathed the smoke in. I think they were only for a "cool apperence" because if he really sucked it into his lungs then he wouldn't have been able to carry that beautiful voice for that long. |
~Blue_Acid~ 10.02.2005 16:19 |
Freddie smoked yea and it influenced his voice. Compare his live voice in the 70's to the 80's real big horrible diffrence. And he had to have quit once he found out he had aids cause that speeds up the virus and will kill u faster. |

Trust me as a professional smoker: watching the footage in which he smokes, Freddie DID smoke over his lungs! ;-) |

Jjeroen 11.02.2005 08:16 |
So did I! At that time I wasn't trying to get personal at all! It was just a remark in general. Just to take away the thought he smokes 'light and mild' only. Obviously you took that personally, but that's fine with me. But stating Freddie did NOT smoke Marlboro is just plain false! Plenty of mid-80's pictures and backstage/interview footage to prove that. |
Serry... 11.02.2005 09:13 |
jeroen wrote: But stating Freddie did NOT smoke Marlboro is just plain false! Plenty of mid-80's pictures and backstage/interview footage to prove that.As well as writing that he didn't smoke mild and light cigarettes. Someone before already wrote (I think it was Mr Bad Guy) that Fred didn't smoke Marlboro too often. And again: please write to Mrs Jacky Smith that she's wrong, not to me! Calm down, jeroen! |
Jjeroen 11.02.2005 09:39 |
Jesus! Who's taking stuff personally here!? Calm down?? I WAS calm! Why are you making such a fuss? As far as I'm concerned there is not a problem whatsoever. I even wrote that in my previous post! You probably didn't understand the intended tone of my words, but I don't know which other words to use. Sorry! But maybe you should read a bit more careful too; I NEVER said that Freddie did NOT smoke light and/or mild cigarettes! I never said you were wrong! I just said 'he smoked Marlboro's' (I never said he smoked Marlboro SOLELY) and that MARLBORO's are not quite mild and not quite light. Because they (they = Marlboro's!) are one of the heaviest brands around. This is so typical to Queenzone nowadays. The source of fights in here is not reading properly, perception and interpretation. Hostility is in he eye of the beholder most of the time. The people in here that are not hostile are accused of being so anyway. Because there are quite some pricks around people EXPECT all of us to be hostile and start putting the wrong weight into people's words. Once and for all: I was not BEING personal in the beginning, I was not TAKING anything personal =until your previous post of course= and I was NOT trying to be hostile nor defensive. The only thing that bothered me is that you said Freddie did NOT smoke Marlboro's AT ALL, while there is plenty of evidence that he DID! =Amongst other brands, sure! I don't stick to one brand exclusively either! And if he smoked those light and mild ones MORE then Marlboro's, I believe you too= Come on, I'm just your average Joe and I most certainly don't want to pick a fight over a pack of cigarettes! And I am not GOING to either! Now, come on and let's smoke a fag together! ;-) |

yeah its cigarettes who really cares god and everyone wonders why people get mad at them when they talk about stupid topics |

Personally...I thought Freddie voice sounded great the whole time. Where is this glaring difference in the live voice from 1977 concerts to say Wembly in 1986?? Live Aid in 1985 is considered by many rock critics to one of the strongest vocal performances by any rock singer. Fred would have been smoking for years by then. Fred sounded older to me by the mid 1980's.... but he was also near 40 years old then too. I think any change in his voice had more to do age than anything...like it does with all singers. |
Ellie79 16.02.2005 12:08 |
Hi all!I'm new here and I hope to have fun posting and share opinions with you..I'm Ellie and I'm 26 years old..I chose this topic because I'm really impressed how great Freddie's voice has always sounded and I've beenn surprized about the fact he's been a heeavy smoker..Ok,being a non smoker I don't know if there's a big difference or not,but I believe there might be,between a non smoker voice and a smoker voice...I think really Roger's voice sounded like a smoker voice(like he used to be or maybe he is..),but I haven't bet anything on Freddie's!!Anyway,I've ever seen him smoking smt different from Marlboro, but maybe he should have smoked that brand too, although I'm quite sure the smoker of Marlboro has always been Roger..Did he really smoke as heavily as people say? That's just curiosity, but if you'd like to let me know about it,I'll be glad..thanx guys and cheers!! |
Mcm 16.02.2005 13:29 |
He gave me his cigarette during the Radio Ga Ga video shoot and this was a ROTHMANS. Doesn't necessarily follow that he smoked these all the time though. Anyway, I'm on Brian's side on this subject. I hate and despise smoking and i'm a smoker! Sadly, i'm too pyscologically weak to give up. |
Scott_Mercury 16.02.2005 14:18 |
Did all of Queen smoke? I have footage of Freddie, Roger, and John all smoking.....I have never seen a photo or footage of Brian smoking. |
Aisha Sweetness 16.02.2005 15:19 |
I read somewhere!!! cant find the book at the moment, that freddie started smoking in 1981 and he said it was to make his voice sound more husky which i think it achieved. x |
jasen101 16.02.2005 15:53 |
at least he never smoked crack. Now that would have definately screwed up his voice! |

Scott_Mercury 16.02.2005 20:58 |
So the bottom line is that all smoked except Brian. Honestly, I have been a huge Queen fan since I can remember, and I didn't know Deacon smoked until about a month ago. Its not a big deal...I just can't believe I didn't notice. On the One Vision video, we clearly see Roger and Fred smoking. Brian would have had to put up with alot of something he didn't like if he wasn't into smoking. I have interviews of Freddie chaining down one after the other. |
Ellie79 17.02.2005 05:22 |
My God,Mcm,ve u seen them during the Radio Gaga video footage? That must have been such an unforgivable experience(of course it had to be!!)..Could you tell me smt more...please?:-)Did you talk to them?Which impression have you been about them?I really envy you if it has happened,at that time I was only at Jimmy May's age,unfortunately...But that was the period of time, from my point of view, where they looked better and The Works is my favourite album!!Thanx in advance if you could please tell me smt about it!! |
Ellie79 17.02.2005 05:31 |
Anyway, concerning Brian's attitude on smoking,I guess he has never done it,I mean,in public..But maybe in his 14 or 15 he has just tried, like the 99% of us has done in his teenage years...Brian has always figured like the"other side"of Queen,he seems also the one who realy cares about his fans and their opinion..But unfortunately I don't know any of them and I"judge" from what I usually hear among people!! |
john bodega 17.02.2005 09:16 |
Keep in mind just how great Fred was. At Live Aid I believe he was suffering a pretty nasty throat infection/influenza or SOMETHING... his doc told him not to sing. |
