I went to see WWRY shortly after it opened. I have no desire to see it again. Do you love it or hate it? I know some people see it again and again. That's fine by me, if it's bringing so many people so much enjoyment. Why do I not like it? Two words, Ben Elton. In my opinion, the screenplay is crap. The story is so toe-curlingly awful, even considering that it isn't mean't to be serious. The lead parts were especially weak. On the plus side, the band played brilliantly, and the people who took the parts of Killer Queen and Britney were excellent singers(far better than the two leads). What do you think?
I agree. The production and the band are excellent. The screen play is awful. The jokes cannot make up for the embarrassing stupidity of the storyline. I also find it is more than questionable when a band who makes money with someone like Britney Spears thinks it's appropriate to have a laugh at the expense of her - that's really hypocritical. Same with blaming the decline of music on boy bands (remember 5ive?)among others. I also felt very strongly that this music is NOT Rock'n Roll as Brian and Roger keep telling us - it's well rehearsed, polished and uncontroversial pop music. WWRY is not more Rock'n Roll than any other musical.
In the German production the so called "local jokes" are all about the lowest of the low entertainment productions in Germany like "I am a celebrity, get me out of here" etc. People who do not waste their time on crap like this need to be explained the names (!!). It looks like Queen expect that only dumb people are willing to waste their money on the musical. In addition, Brian even apologised to a fan of such a "celebrity" on his website claiming that he has all the respect in the world for this "artist" - really laughable. The "artist" has zero talent and is only the product of some so called talent show which is the cheapest possible TV "entertainment". In Germany nobody respects him.
Also, the German production is less sumptuous than London although the Musical Dome is bigger than the Dominion Theater and there is enough room for all the stage "gimmicks". On top of this, the German screen play is even more stupid and makes even less sense - for example the story says that English is the forbidden language (probably because it is such a "free" language) but most of the songs are in English nonetheless. Another "highlight" is Freddie rising from the Rhine towards the end of the show which makes no sense at all except that it's an attempt to chum up the German audience.
The storyline is utterly ridiculous. Who cares though, it's the music that matters. It's well sang, well played, bloody great audience, great standing ovations at the end, and half price Mon-Thurs....what more could you ask!
At least this lot know they aren't Queen and aren't pretending to be. ;-)
Anyway, a suitable time for me to re-invite Queenzone to our little QOL meet up on March 12th I think. All welcome. link
Lol @ brianmay-wannabe, nice joke :)
Thanks for the invitation, fairydandy, I am sure it will be great to meet all these people (no need to see the musical, though). London is not exactly round the corner, so not too many people can fly over for a drink :)

No worries YV, but you must have at least some Brits on this site!
