Probably has been covered, but then again, what hasn't?
In my dorm, there are quite a few die hard Moulin Rouge fans. Whenever someone brings up the excellent singing, I counter that they butchered Show Must Go On. Everyone is quick to reply that they thought Nicole was *fantastic* and did it justice, although they never heard the original.
I find it offensive almost, that while Nicole Kidman does her whiny, fake "gimme an Oscar!" rendition of SMGO, Freddie was actually physically dying as he sang the original.
Is anyone else upset by the rendition, or by MR fans praising it?
I heard that version before the queen version. I liked it quite alot but I do like Queen better. When I heard Freddie sing it I thought, HEY I KNOW THIS SONG :) and yeah
I don't mind it. Then again, Moulin Rouge is one of my favorite movies and I heard it before I even knew about the Queen version. It fit so well into the story, even though it was originally written for a completely different reason.
The version of 'The Show Must Go On' is complete insult to Queen and Freddie. It was like spitting and one of the most sacred works from the band. I think it would have probably been less insulting to have William Hung sing it.
Then again, 'The Show Must Go On' was one of many rock/pop classics that were totally destroyed on such a piece of shit movie like 'Moulin Rouge'. I have no doubt IMO that it was probably the worst movie I've ever seen.
My respects to Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor for being very talented actors, but neither of them can sing for crap... yet their crappy singing can't match how crappy the movie itself is.

ha! i only figures it out just the other week!! everytime i watched that movie, i would always think TSMGO would be perfect, but i always skip boring parts, so i never saw it, until friends of ours watched it, and i started singing it and THEN i realised it was the same song!
but yes, i dont really like that version. in fact, i think its crap!
I don't see why it should be offensive that Nicole Kidman sings TSMGO, just because Freddie was dying when he sang it.
It's just a different version of the song, people. Sheesh.
Since I use CC when watching TV/Movies I never heard the song, but still think that movie is the worst I ever seen, IMO
but that movie is sorta like a cult movie, it's gonna have it's die hard fans like clockwork orange and so forth, since is vastly different.

Well I'm a huge Moulin Rouge fan. Or I WAS. I think I've never seen it after I listened to SMGO. I've never noticed the song in the film :S
Maby I should check it out now!
Freddie's rendition will stand forever as one of the truly great vocals.
Anyone else will already know that they're trying to climb everest with it, so they may as well just have a crack and do their best.
I didn't like it in the film, but I've heard worse versions of songs in my time.
Queen's Gimme Some Lovin at Wembley being one of them!

TSMGO was destroyed, but the song itself suited the movie. All the other classics were performed really great what led me to naming Moulin Rouge my all time favourite movie...
Both Nicole and Ewan can sing really good. I like Ewan's voice a lot. Sadly he wasn't offered to record any duet with a well known singer as Nicole was, I'd be one of his biggest fans..hehehe...
