I am a great Queen fan, so I am sorry to say this. John Deacon had a few good basslines, most of the time on record. But live he was really a bad bass player. Look at : play the game, somebody to love, we are the champions (on the WWRY dvd) or We will rock you fast, Action this day (On Fire dvd), that's much too simple for such an famous bass player. At Wembley he was much better, I have to say that, but most of the live concerts he was nog good enough I think. Roger Taylor, John Bonham and Phil Collins are the best rock drummers. |

Deaky definitely rules :) Have you guys seen the little clip, where Deaky is standing at the river bank in Budapest, talking to a little boy, who asks him where he's from and stuff like that? That's typical Deaky - so cute :) Compare - in the same clip Roger is racing karts (of course), Brian is flying an air balloon, and Freddie asks about the the Parlament - "Is it for sale? How many bedrooms?" :) |

My favorite drummer is Lars Ulrich. I think he's great, and he has the best facial expressions when he plays! :-D Bass player...I like McCartney, he's melodic. |

Deaky is an excellent bass player. Millionaire Waltz is a particular favourite. Also, listen to the making of Bo Rap. Those lines were played live, untweaked, and often "doubled up" on another take, note and tempo perfect. Nice. Roger's drum sound was always a favourite of mine too. Witness the 46664 concert when he's duetting of that wee skinny girl from the Corrs. It's the sound of thunder up against one of those wee toy drumming monkeys. God love her, she tried, but frankly, I was embarrassed for her.... |

I don't believe nobody mentioned Ian Paice. Roger is very very good. Excellent timing and a cute and gentle touch but also able to hit it straight. He is part of the Queen-can-do-everything catalogue. Mind that some are not so wide spread in technique. |

John and Roger aren't in the Top 50....... .......individually. Having said that, take any 70s Queen album and focus on just the percussion all the way through....grab another LP and listen to just the bass. The boys were damn frickin' good. And unique. They weren't in Peart and Moon and Bonham's or Entwhistle and Lee's class. Then again, Buddy Rich was perhaps the best drummer, and Stanley Clarke runs circles around 99.9999999 of the bassists. John and Roger weren't asked to be 'great'. They added to the texture and taste without ruining the recipe. 'Liar' and 'Brighton Rock' are a couple of examples. Ringo added to the 'mix' wit da baytuls. No one's calling him the greatest, but he suffered through those marathon sessions with nary a mistake, and when allowed to rip on 'Rain', certainly did so. Check out John Panozza's drum work on Styx' 'Grand Illusion' and 'Pieces of Eight'. Hell, check out Neil Smith on some of Alice Cooper's LPs. Beats the hell out of Roger's post 70s work. As to Collins.....puhleeze. He couldn't hold a candle to Chester Thompson. That's probably why Genesis always did the drum duet in the 80s. now if I could just get my hands on those Dream Theatre cds..... j+iii |

But I admit, I need to listen to some more bass players carefully. As for Paul McCartney... I could play all that stuff myself years ago. As for songwriting, that's another story, of course! But back to bass licks, I'd like to find someone here who can play the scale runs in Dream Theater's A Change Of Seasons. ok.computer wrote: Deaky is an excellent bass player. Millionaire Waltz is a particular favourite.Speaking of Millionaire Waltz, I haven't heard one live version of the song where John perfectly nails the bass lines. He always misses notes here and there. That's the sign of a not-so-accomplished musician. Anyone can nail something after 10+ takes in the studio, but real bassists like Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, and John Myung nail them on stage, EVERY TIME! Roger's drum sound was always a favourite of mine too. Witness the 46664 concert when he's duetting of that wee skinny girl from the Corrs. It's the sound of thunder up against one of those wee toy drumming monkeys. God love her, she tried, but frankly, I was embarrassed for her....I was embarrased for Roger... he missed half of the rhythm changes. Jgoodm, I'll be sure to check out those musicians I haven't really heard of whom you mentioned in your post. |
