Anyone besides me, going to see it? I can't wait! Gerard Butler, doesn't sing too well, but he's very handsome for being the Phantom. |

I would like to see it and my sister wants to tomorrow, but I'm not so sure if I'll go or not. I'm always up for a musical, tho. :^) |

I saw it with my boyfriend last week, and we've been talking about seeing it again (and then again) ever since then. Gerard Butler isn't the best singer I've ever heard, but I thought he did a pretty damn good job as the Phantom/Erik/Opera Ghost/Angel of Music/For God's Sake, Pick a Name and Stick With It!. His performance is disturbingly believeable. I'm just sick and tired of hearing "trained musicians" gripe about how his voice cracked on occasion. I thought it added to the story. I'm a singer myself, and I don't need a movie critic to tell me what good singing sounds like. |

I think I'd have to see it live on stage. A lot of my friends have seen it in NY and they say it is AWESOME! What few songs I did hear, I really enjoyed. I think to see it live before seeing it on film will help me better appreciate the whole thing. |

I saw it over winter break and I loved it! |

I went to see it with my mum a few days ago and I really enjoyed it. I saw the stage show some years ago but because I was quite young didn't really understand the story, and seeing it now and actually understanding the story really helped....as it does. The lip synching was a bit off from time to time but everything else was awesome, although the chandelier falling was rather more exciting on stage. Other than that no gripes, highly recommended. |

I will definitely see it. Has anyone seen the 1920's (non-musical) silent with Lon Cheney? That is honestly one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. |

Hello Antici...pation! I see you are a fellow RHPS fan! Nice profile picture! :-) I have not seen Phantom yet but I want to of course... Just had to say hi. |

I know I'm a bit late in replying, but since I've seen this movie almost seven times since it came out in December, I just had to add my two cents...even if what I say ends up being worth nowhere near that much... Gerard Butler as the Phantom...he was a lot better than I was expecting. I saw the musical when I was twelve, and that will always be The Standard, and while I wasn't exactly in love with his singing, Music of the Night was the only song I actually thought it was truly inadequate. His voice grew on me, and he was incredibly believable! Emmy Rossum, I think, did a marvelous job as Christine, not that I wasn't hoping Sarah Brightman had ended up with the part, mind you. In general, I loved the movie. I was a bit disappointed with certain things (like the changing of certain lyrics, the Phantom's first appearance - which was so horribly blah...), but I think it was incredible, really. The choreography for 'Masquerade' was just stunning, as was the way they worked out that final scene in the Phantom's Lair with Raoul, Christine, and Erik... and as a dancer, I loved the ballet in 'Il Muto'... Gomen, I didn't mean to be so long-winded...but it was a great movie. Still, it wasn't quite so magical as seeing it onstage, but then, I don't think anything is. Ja ne! |
geeksandgeeks 27.01.2005 21:15 |
Sarah and Michael are both getting up there. If the movie had been made ten years ago they probably would have been cast. I GET TO SEE IT ONSTAGE...I am still in a state of disbelief. |

OH MY GOD YOU PEOPLE HAVE TO GO SEE IT!!! I saw it on January 21, 2005. At 16.30. It has been ALL I have been able to think about since I saw it. Positively amazing. I can't even think of words to describe it. I'm trying to see it again soon. I am literally shaking as I type. I love it as much as I love QUEEN!!! I don't even like "Stargate" that much! I have been waiting for someone to start a thread like this so that I wouldn't have to... I didn't even see your post, Linda! I sometimes feel like I'm going just slightly mad... no pun intended there. By the way, I have never seen the stage version or read the book, and I don't usually like romances, but this is just AMAZING. Also, I am hoping to buy the 2-disc soundtrack tomorrow, so I'm crossing my fingers! "The phantom of the opera is there- inside my mind!" |
MetzgerR 28.01.2005 12:45 |
Hm...the novel is interesting, and certainly much more detailed (not to mention historically accurate), but Gaston Leroux was not a particularly talented author. As far as Gothic novels go, I think Mary Shelley was tops - and yes, I consider PotO to be a Gothic novel, rather than strictly a romance novel. Although the whole pretend engagement thing between Raoul and Christine was sweet... In any case, I highly recommend reading the novel if you can find it, and definitely see the stage version. The movie was beautiful, but can't come close to the stage version! Ja ne! |

i saw it, and i thought it was a top movie!! i like culture, unlike alot of people i know! but the stage show was better if i remember correctly (i was 8 or something when i saw it). Minnie Drivers funny in the movie though |
FairyQueen 28.01.2005 23:10 |
I actually preferred the movie to the broadway show...I just saw the show in September...thought it was cool when the chandelier fell, but I preferred to see Sarah Brightman play Christine...nothing beats the orginial cast...but, the movie is awesome... |

I just got the soundtrack yesterday and it is BRILLIANT. If you get the double-CD setit will have words on it as well. I don't know if you get that with just the one-disc soundtrack. Anyway... it's great and you should all buy it. |
MetzgerR 30.01.2005 00:44 |
The two cd soundtrack is wonderful - I love all the incidental music! I love what Andrew Lloyd Webber did once he finally got a full orchestra to play around with! I just thought it was incredible that Emmy Rossum made her opera debut (I heard it was at the Met, but I'm not positive there...) at age six - that's just mind-boggling! Still, it's very nice that the cast was so capable when it came to singing their parts...except for Minnie Driver, everybody sang, right? Ja ne! |
DoctorNine 30.01.2005 15:50 |
Minnie Driver didn't sing as Carlotta, but she did sing one song- "Learn To Be Lonely." I am only judging on that one song, but I think that she has a good voice. Otherwise, I believe that they all sang their own parts. My only question is, if they got Gerard Butler to sing his part, why didn't Minnie Driver? Unless they had already planned to have Margaret Preece sing it... For those of you who have seen it, what are your favorite quotes? I have so many, it is hard to pick just one line or stanza or phrase, but it would probably have to be when the Phantom says, "DA** YOU! YOU LITTLE PRYING PANDORA! YOU LITTLE LYING DELILAH!" I think that's right, but if not, then let me know, please. |

^_^ I liked the movie. And Gerard Butler is totally hot w/the mask. And I think he has a wonderfully unique voice! Yeah, I enjoyed the movie. I bought the soundtrack, too. |
MetzgerR 30.01.2005 20:16 |
Ooh, Gerard Butler is so good looking! And his singing voice does grow on one...though nobody can top Michael Crawford as the Phantom! Anyways, Minnie Driver didn't sing because Carlotta had to actually have the range of an opera diva. From what I've heard of Minnie Driver's voice - okay, it's only from the song she sings at the end of PotO - I wouldn't say she has it. And I would imagine it would require immense training to sing in that manner, training I doubt Minnie Driver has. My favourite line? Goodness, there are so many I love! Mainly they're from the songs: From 'Masquerade' Masquerade/Paper faces on parade/Masquerade/Hide your face so the world will never find you/Masquerade/Every face a different shade/Masquerade/Look around there's another mask behind you Masquerade/Seething shadows breathing lies/Masquerade/You could fool any friend who ever knew you/Masquerade/Leering satyrs peering eyes/Masquerade/Run and hide but a face will still pursue you Frightfully observant, really... Anyways, ja ne! |

POTO has been nominated for three Oscars! The categories are: *Original song= "Learn To Be Lonely"- music: Andrew Lloyd Webber; lyrics: Charles Hart *Art Direction= Art Direction: Anthony Pratt; Set Decoration: Celia Bobak *Cinematography= John Mathieson Just in case anyone from the film is reading this (which I doubt, but what the heck?), good luck, POTO! You'll need it against "The Aviator," "House of Flying Daggers," "Shrek 2," "Finding Neverland," "Million Dollar Baby," "Sideways" and "Passion of the Christ"... but I hope you win! I do, though, find it EXTREMELY unfair that we cannot vote on it, only the Academy can. Good luck! |

Million Dollar Baby...*faints*. Ray...*dies*. Although considering the three it's up for, I have no objections if it takes 'em all! |
