I always wondered why Frank Zappa referred to a certain "Freddie" several times in that song - maybe I read too much into it, but in the early 80's Queen were still a household name in the states and Freddies Image was always a bit ambiguous... what do you think ?
By the way, Zappa was a great artist and I love the song, and I have no doubt that the lyrics fit to Freddies sense of humour anyway.
That's what I initially thought, but I don't think Zappa would lampoon Freddie quite so vaguely - when the song was recorded, in 1978, Freddie wasn't overtly gay to the public eye. And, like I said, if Zappa wanted to make a statement, he would have REALLY made a statement instead of a general reference to Freddie.
With that said, Zappa was absolutely one of the best composers and arrangers of the twentieth century. Such humor, but such musicianship. Shame he went too soon.
If you like humour in music, one of the greatest moments in musical history occurs in Flakes on the same album. There's an interlude that satirizes/mocks Bob Dylan, and features a parody of the harmonica that appeared to appear in every Dylan song of the era. The harmonica appears in full force at the end of the first two passages. At the end of the third passage, it loses a little steam. In the fourth passage, it appears as an accidental note, and every time I hear it it cracks me up. It's perfectly placed, and a perfect parody of Dylan and the whole scene. Check it out Lester!
I wondered that as well.
Great Lyrics though -
"Got a cheer-leader here wants to help with my paper,
Let her do all the work then maybe later i'll rape her"
Sick, obviously but rather funny too.
