When I first put the Works CD in my CD player I noticed at once that its total playtime is less than 40 minutes. That is not very much for a rock album, even (or especially in the 80ies, right?). Has anyone any idea why they released such a short album? Are there any reasons? I read somewhere (or heard) that The Works was some kind of a jam session album. It certainly wasn't a long jam then, was it?
Could be the reason being that the four guys did not like each other that much at that time?
I guess the reason is that it was released in vinyl time and vinyls don't have so long playing time.

'Could be the reason being that the four guys did not like each other that much at that time?'
I believe that the mutual hatred produced what is now known as Hot Space.
But that's just me.
I guess they figured they had "Radio Ga Ga," "Hammer to Fall," "I Want to Break Free," and even "It's a Hard Life" that were possible hits, so there was no reason to add another track when it was unlikely to anything for them. I doubt many people buy albums because they have 10 songs intead of 9.
I find it disgraceful that many bands and artists still make 30 or 35 minute long albums, like Weezer for instance.
Some others actually try to pack the entire album to fit nearly the 80 minutes of a CD.

I have nothing against The Works, because I love Man On The Prowl and Keep Passing The Open Windows.
'The Works' is a very underated album. It might have been better received perhaps if it included 'I Go Crazy'.
I have to say that I truly dislike 'Machines (Back To Humans), and Keep Passing The Open Windows, but I think the rest of the album is superb.
"Keep Passing The Open Windows" may be the best track on the album, in my opinion. I'm not too big on "Man on the Prowl" however. I used to hate "Machines", but now I kind of like it. It was a really great idea, it just could have been executed better.
I doubt the presence of "I Go Crazy" would have had any affect on the overall critical or commercial success of the album.

Naah... all their previous albums had been vinyl releases as well and they had been longer (Dunno about SHA, I'D have to check, but that is okay, cos it is the best ;). ) Actually, I think Miracle has been the first album that made it on CD directly... or was it Magic?
the works was there first album after a years break (83) they said at the time it was getting back to their roots, after the hot space fiasco (which i personally like) i think the album itsef is a poor reflection queen although of course it made no 1 and spawned 4 top 20 hits. too me its like the miracle very niave the actual tracks on the album are poor unlike innuendo probably their best album with sheer heart attack and queen, queen 2
id agree with you except about the miracle..i like it..admittely some of its disposable and not much behind it(e.g: rain must fall) buts its a nice listen...a calm before the emotions that Innuendo brings(which I really love)

You're right, The Works definitely is underrated. Even though it is short, it's still a strong album. Hammer To Fall, Radio Ga Ga, It's A Hard Life and I Want To Break Free are all classics, but Is This The World We Created? and Tear It Up are good, too.
fillers:
Queen I: none
QUEEN II: none
SHA: SMM
ANATO: Sweet Lady, extremely out of place
ADATR: none
NOTW: GDML
Jazz: Fun It, MOTJ(end part mash), Mustapha(although i luv it, it's a filler, they could've start the album with FBG)
GAME: Coming Soon
FG: All except Football Fight,Battle Theme, Flash's Theme and The Hero xD...hehehe
HS: LIR, ATD
WORKS: TIU, M(OBTH), MOTP
AKOM: OYOL, PISCTP, DLYH
MIRACLE: RMF, MBDM
INNUENDO: ...hard one....Hitman..Delilah
MIH: track 12 and track 13 :P
some good ones there fairy king, i especially dont like the fg album apart fromthe ones u mentioned, i like action and coming soon tho good rockers! nice post
I only like two songs here: Keep Passing and Machines. The rest I hate it. Ga Ga & Break Free: pop crap. Tear It Up: even though I love hard rock and things like that, I hardly ever enjoy Brian's efforts in that, I usually don't like his style, too pentatonic perhaps... I love his ballads though.
Hammer To Fall: as a song, I love it (i.e. the chord progressions, the modulation, the lyrics). But as a recording I hate it. Way too slow. The harmonies are well-constructed but imho ruin the mood. I prefer by far the live versions and even more Brian's one in BTTL tour. Even if Fred was better singer than Brian, imo Brian developed it better. No wonder, he wrote it, no-one but him could exactly perform it in all its greatness. I hate the AW version.
Is This The World - dull imo. Nice message, poor music and costruction. Prowl - I never enjoyed rockabilly, there are some few pieces that I like in that genre, but this one doesn't make part of that group.
All in all The Works is my least favourite Queen album.
