guys... do yourselves a favor and don't see it, it was AWFUL... almost as bad as Alexander but considering it wasnt 3 hours long or however long alexander was it was survivavble.
I have seen The Phantom of the Opera a few times on stage and was so jazzed to see the film version. I was thinking you know, thered be some kind of adaptation from stage to screen as musical theatre type acting SO DOES NOT WORK on film. Well sadly there wasn't. I also expected the singing to be you know, generally mediocre as when it comes to casting they sacrifice some singing skills for acting talent but there wasnt any of that either. At moments i found myself choking back laughter at the mellodramatic tactics resorted to and at other times I had to keep on stuffing my mouth with popcorn to keep myself from falling asleep. Even the singing was mediocre...Emmy's voice gets boring after the first 5 minutes of her singing and the phantom's voice... well, it may sound good on mars where the atmosphere is like a vacuous hole and there IS NO SOUND. Emmy was a good choice as she looked the part but her acting skills need improvement; her face emotions need to match her singing tone as her tone needs to match what shes singing. She also just needs to act differently, this is film hon. But yes, a voice which sounded okay and tolerable at the beginning became monotonous by the end of the night. The sets were very cheap looking as were the effects. at the beginning with the black and white I felt as if it was trying to be a cheap wannabe Moulin Rouge and it became progressively worse, everything looked SO MUCH like a set. The films only saving graces were the costume designs and Minnie Driver, who we unfortunately saw less and less of as the film progressed. Her fits gave a kind of comic relief and she was at least interesting to watch.
Have any of you seen it? What do you think?
