As the only artist to duet with Queen in Freddie's lifetime, what song of Bowie's do you think is the greatest? And, no, Under Pressure does not count! |
AllDeadAllDead 12.01.2005 14:26 |
i'd have to say Young Americans. other contenders: ashes to ashes oh you pretty things heroes golden years sound and vision |
Mean Mistreater 12.01.2005 14:27 |
Space Oddity Oh you pretty things Starman Let's Dance Life on Mars |
Mr.Jingles 12.01.2005 14:29 |
This should be on the personal section. But anyways, my favorite is 'Modern Love', 'Heroes', 'All The Young Dudes'... even though this later one is a Mott The Hopple song but was written by Bowie. Btw, great performance of that song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute. |

Loving The Alien. Love this song :) |

Before I write this, let me say that Bowie is pretty much tied with Queen in my book. 1. The whole Ziggy Stardust album 2. Changes 3. The whole Low album 4. The man who Sold the world 5. Heroes I could go on and on (I actually considered listing his entire catalogue, but thought the better of it ;) |
siljeoen 12.01.2005 16:13 |
Alink is a hard one...I really love Bowie!! but...Starman,Station to station,Suffragette city ,All the young dudes and The man who sold the world are all incredible great songs! Last summer i had the pleasure of being on a Bowie-consert and he played all of them except "Starman"!!-God,-I'm not worthy!!:) |

imho, there's not a Queen or Bowie song that can hold a candle to Changes. I'm crazy about that one. But Life On Mars is phenomenal, as well as Space Oddity, and of course Ziggy |
QueenZeppelin 12.01.2005 18:48 |
Actually, Bowie really is the only artist to have dueted with Queen during Freddie's lifetime. Queen recorded a few tracks with Michael Jackson that never saw the light of day (one of them Jackson did with Mick Jagger instead). Queen also had a jam session with legendary guitarist/Brian May friend/Queen fan (big time) Jeff Beck. Queen also had a jam session with Rod Stewart that resulted in an unreleased track. |
Brimon 12.01.2005 19:01 |
It may not be Bowie's greatest song but I love, John, I'm Only Dancing. |

reply to MrJingles79: '''All The Young Dudes'... even though this later one is a Mott The Hopple song but was written by Bowie. Btw, great performance of that song at the Freddie Mercury Tribute.'' Well, Bowie did record his own version of ATYD for the Aladdin Sane album but it didn't get released until 1995. Isn't funny how so many people rate Dudes as the highlight of the Freddie tribute gig, when it was actually only one of two songs in the Queen+ section not co-written by Queen. How did Bowie get away with that?! |
kleinhond 13.01.2005 10:21 |
...the other song of course being Bowie's Heroes. reply to Dennis tm: Freddie's live time? accept from Bono, George Michael and all the other from LIVE AID (Do They Know It's Christmas?) these are the other ones: - Cliff Richard - Elton John - Monserrat Caballee - Michael Jackson not forgetting guest appereances in Queen shows.'' I don't really think you can call the shambolic mass singalong at the Live Aid finale a duet. LOL Freddie didn't even get a line to himself! (well, he probably did backstage but that's another story...). A duet is, by definition, where two people trade verses or lines, coming from the latin for two - duo. And I was careful to say that Bowie made a record with QUEEN, not Freddie. As far as I'm aware, Elton didn't record with Queen in the studio, and certainly not in Freddie's lifetime. Freddie duetted with MC and Jacko on solo or Jacksons projects, and the stories of Queen recording with Rod Stewart and Andy Gibb have never actually been confirmed have they? Anyway, no record has resulted from the allegeed sessions. As for Jo Dare, I'm afraid I have no idea who she is. Likewise with who has joined Queen on stage in Freddie's lifetime. Anyone got any details? |

well, my favourite is Life On Mars, followed by China Girl and Ashes To Ashes but at the moment, i love "Absolute Beginners", a fantastic song!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

HEROES! |
kleinhond 13.01.2005 10:55 |
I can't believe that Heroes did not get through to the final five shortlist from the 25 songs you could choose from for the Brits/Radio 2 vote. It's up there with Space Oddity as Bowie's most famous song. WATC has done well but I think Robbie is bound to win. |
TheDrown 13.01.2005 11:00 |
much like Queen, or Elvis, or anyone of such a stature, there is *no* way whatsoever, you could choose a "best" song. you could go for historical significance, or artistic value, or songwriting value, etc. and you just can't do it. |
Scirocco1977 13.01.2005 11:12 |
People are gonna stone me for that, but what the hell: I only know his latest works beginning with Earthling. And from that catalogue, I really love 'Sunday' from the Heathen album. |
Mean Mistreater 13.01.2005 11:19 |
I also really love Bowie's cover of "Across the Universe" And yes, I don't know why I left All the young dudes off my list! Amazing song by Bowie AND Mott |
runner70 13.01.2005 12:39 |
ALways had the opinion that Bowie had one gem in his entire carriere and that was called "Under Pressure" - end! |

Heroes The Man Who Sold The World Space Oddity Life On Mars? Starman Ziggy Stardust |
HarryH 13.01.2005 15:14 |
Hi all, Bowie's best song? That pretty much excludes most of what he released between 1983 and 1995, then.... ;) Seriously, he did release a lot of quality stuff BEFORE 1983, with a random list of favourites including: David Bowie (aka Space Oddity): only heard 'Space Oddity' from this, so an easy victory there! TMWSTW: again, only heard one from this, the title track (preferred the late 70's live version) Hunky Dory: 'Life On Mars?' Ziggy Stardust: 'Five Years' Aladdin Sane: title track or 'Lady Grinning Soul' Pin-Ups: only heard 'Sorrow' from this Diamond Dogs: 'Sweet Thing' Young Americans: 'Win' or 'Somebody Up There Likes Me' STS: 'Wild Is The Wind' or the title track Low: 'Always Crashing In The Same Car' or 'Be My Wife' Heroes: title track or 'Secret Life Of Arabia' Lodger: 'Repetition' Scary Monsters: 'Fashion' that's where I part company with his career, other than that I liked the singles taken from 'Let's Dance', and also a few others. |
Mean Mistreater 13.01.2005 15:51 |
Speaking of Space Oddity, what do you guys think of the 69' version? I found the video of it online, and it's so cool!!!! |

Harry said: ''Bowie's best song? That pretty much excludes most of what he released between 1983 and 1995, then.... ;)'' Oh we know that. There's only one person so far in this thread that has included songs from 1983-1995. Having said that, the 1993 album Buddha Of Suburbia is great, as is a lot of the Outside album. Mean Mistreater, the hit single version of Space Oddity was recorded and released in 1969, tho the video was done in 1972 for its US re-release. Maybe you are referring to the demo version on the box set Sound + Vision or the Deram version from the movie Love You Til Tuesday, which is just about to be issued on DVD (he's in a shiny space suit) |

Here's my list: My absolute favourite is Ashes to Ashes, closely followed by the brilliant Life On Mars. Other favourites: - Space Oddity - Sunday (especially the live-version) - Absolute Beginners - Scary Monsters - Rock 'n Roll Suicide - Time - Hang on to Yourself - Thru These Architects Eyes - Look Back in Anger - Five Years - Speed of Life to name but a few. |
