Due to the shortage of decent topics on this forum, I have taken the liberty to post a completely random yet IMHO good topic here:
Who here doesn't love the song Wish You Were Here? It's soooo beautiful...
So you think you can tell
Heaven from hell?
Blue skies from pain?
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rain?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead-role in a cage?
How I wish,
How I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls,
Swimming in a fishbowl,
Year after year.
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found?
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
That song is from the era on Pink Floyd when they were still a BAND, not Roger Waters+. It's written by David Gilmour and Roger Waters.
What you guys think?
Great song. Wish You Were Here and Meddle are their best albums IMHO. I find Roger Waters to be a bit arrogant and inaccessable - much like Bono or Sting.
Weird thing is that I love Pink Floyd, but 'Wish You Were Here' doesn't do much for me.
I know almost every single Floyd fan loves that song, but it doesn't impress me much. I think it's just an OK song.
Yeah, I can understand your reasoning I guess. I myself didn't see the beauty in it till I heard it played at this funeral, and then it just clicked, you know?
Some do find it bland. But I would call it simple.
It pisses me off when pro-Waters Pink Floyd fans rant too much about Dave Gilmour, like if he was the one to blame for them splitting.
Besides, it was Roger Waters who wanted to break up the band before Dave Gilmour and the other guys told him that there was no reason to break it off. Then Roger Waters wanted to legally keep the 'Pink Floyd' name to himself, which he eventually lost in a court battle.
I have to admit that Roger Waters is an extremly talented songwriter, but his arrogant and egoistical attitude just pisses me off.
I still think that 'A Momentary Lapse Of Reason', and 'The Division Bell' are great albums. Not as good as anything done from 'Dark Side' to 'The Wall', but still superb.
I think I'm the only Pink Floyd fan who adores The Final Cut. But I agree with Waters' arrogant attitude, which apparently has softened a bit in later years. I find it tough to decide which is better: Floyd's The Division Bell or Waters' Amused To Death.
I don't think Roger Waters was a bad guy, but he was a control freak... He said that they were REALLY a band during DSOTM, but that The Wall was nearly all his, you know? I don't think he was being cocky, in fact I'm sure he was right... the band gradually deteriorated is all. It happens to the best of bands, Styx being another example.. when one guy controls every thing, they're not really a band anymore.
That's why I love Queen so much, lol!
I'm not a particularly big Pink Floyd fan, but that song is probably my favourite of their's.
Apart from the bassline in "One of These Days", obviously...
;-)
