I personally did investigate a lot after I started listening to Queen to learn more about AIDS. And I am pretty sure if things would have been different I would not know that much now. I think the Tribute concert also showed the world what this is all about! So, I say YES.

I think AIDS was brought to attention a little before Freddie's death but i think it's possible that after his death it was noticed alot more.
Aboslutely not. HIV/AIDS had already been noticed and it was something to be concerned of since ten years before the moustached bloke died. Because millions of people equally valuable as him also were victims of that disease.
I believe Freddie's death did cause the world to notice HIV/AIDS. Though his death was tragic, there have been many events that Queen and their friends have done to help fight this terrible epidemic. They include The Elton John AIDS Foundation, The Mercury-Phoenix Trust Fund, and finally The 46664 Concert.
Yes, Freddie has many times been acredited to "awakening MAINSTREAM society to the reality of Aids". I had to do a report on it, so I know these things ;D

It had greater effect than say, Rock Hudson or Rudolf Nureyev.
Yeah, everyone who died of AIDS between 1980 and 1991 were just swept under the rug. They didn't matter because they weren't famous rock stars like Freddie *notices the sarcasm meter broke*.

Ofcorse... When every famous person with AIDS dies more people will notice HIV/AIDS. But he wasn't the first to die because of Aids and the world had noticed aids before him.
If Freddie had died of a heart attack, would people like you still be bringing it up after so many years? Imagine this--"Do think Freddie's death caused the world to notice heart disease?"
It just sounds stupid.
And so is this string.

exactly. and for the record, asking that question is like asking "do bears shit in the woods?"
Freddie's death from HIV/AIDS certainly caused *me* to pay more attention. I'm ashamed to say that, prior to Freddie's death, I was a teenager who didn't think much about things like HIV/AIDS and, when I did, I thought of it as somebody eles's problem because I knew I was personally being safe in my behavior. Freddie's death made me re-evaluate that and realize that, indeed, "AIDS concerns us all".
