The guitar intro of Led Zeppelin's song "Whole Lotta Love" is very similar to The Cross' "Top Of The World" intro - has Roger or someone else from The Cross ever explained or said something about this? (By the way, the middle part of "Whole Lotta Love" sounds a little bit close to Pink Floyd's "On The Run", in my opinion) (Sorry if this topic was posted before) |
Whisperer 06.01.2005 10:20 |
The only exception is that while Whole Lotta Love is hugely over-rated and not a great song, Top of The World Ma is definitely one of the best rock songs ever. |

Oh yeah |

The Cross were simply the best thing to have come out of Queen and the saddest thing in the world is that EMI didn't have the guts to back them alongside Queen as an on-going project. I don't know how Roger managed to stay contracted with them after snubbing them like that. Blue Rock and MBADTK are better than ANYTHING Queen did in the 1980's IMHO as were The Cross's live shows - they were raw and exciting in a way that Queen ceased to be. |
John S Stuart 06.01.2005 11:48 |
Whole Lotta Love was also the inspiration behind the Queen track "Get Down, Make Love", and they both have very similar middle sections. |

Also note that Led Zeppelin's Rock n Roll starts exactly like Litte Richard's "Keep on Knockin'", which was covered by Roger, who is also known as a Little Richard fan. |

Please, please, please, please tell me you're joking Benn. |

I've never heard any of these songs so i can't say much but i have the 'Whole Lotta Love' at home. I'll listen to that later and compare it to the Cross track. |
Scirocco1977 06.01.2005 18:03 |
By the way. Does anyone know whe The Cross broke up? I remember an interview where Roger was asked whether he would reunite with them. And the answer came as fast as you could say blueberry pie: NO! No way! What happened? |
Bohardy 06.01.2005 18:08 |
Roger regained his hearing, along with the rest of his mental faculties, and realised that The Cross were an embarassment; a carbuncle on the face of music, eternally destined for the highest echelons of obscurity and pure and total, unadulterated, shiteness. |
Scirocco1977 06.01.2005 18:12 |
Okay.... where's my dictionary? |
Scirocco1977 06.01.2005 18:12 |
Well, that explains it! |
Maz 06.01.2005 18:36 |
Just imagine, Bohardy, if it had been The Cross to do a cover of Teasin Around. It would have been the convergence of the shiteless twain for you. |

Maybe it's just a nice quote. The boys loved Led Zep. Innuendo is similar to Kashmir. It's a pretty common thing amongst musicians to intentionally throw in a few hints to ones idols. And Led Zep were undoubtedly one of the most influencial Rockbands ever. By the way, this is how a german musician once put it: "Queen were the sense of humour that Led Zeppelin never had... " |

Bohardy, re: >Please, please, please, please tell me you're joking Benn. Nope completely serious. Compared to the utter shit that make up The Works, AKOM and The Miracle (except for Keep Passing The Open Windows, I Go Crazy, Princes Of The Universe, I Want It All and Was It All Worth It), the raw sound and adventure that The Cross displayed were completely refreshing. there was no resting on aurels or pandering to what the record company told them to do (which I guess is why they failed). |

Don't even go there Zeni... Benn: I'm intrigued to find no mention of Germany in your profile. How did you come to have the warped love that you have for The Cross living in the UK? "Blue Rock and MBADTK are better than ANYTHING Queen did in the 1980's...". - You've now issued a kind of caveat for that statement with "...except for Keep Passing The Open Windows, I Go Crazy, Princes Of The Universe, I Want It All and Was It All Worth It...". Queen obviously did do SOME good in the 80s, whereas everything The Cross did was so bad it gave bad a bad name. I'm probably as disappointed in Queen's 80s offerings as you, but although the albums as a whole were pretty poor by their previous high standards, there are enough little moments of magic amongst the filler to easily outclass whatever the hell is the best The Cross could offer. Fuck that. All of Queen's 80s material has redeeming features. The Cross's has none whatsoever. Queen still continued to be diverse, intelligent, meticulous, and fresh, whereas The Cross just peddled insipidly embarassing cheese-infested rock. Queen had a couple of US number ones and a UK number one. The Cross had, I don't know, a number 39 in Germany? I'm gonna have to stop this debate, because I feel like I need to listen to some The Cross to refresh my memory as to just how godawful they were, and that's not something I'm prepared to do. |

It's insulting and ridiculous. I won't go into comparing Queen and The Cross, it'd also be insulting for many people on this board. You go on listening to The Cross, if you like it, I don't like it btw, but keep it decent, boy. You can say for a 1000 times you don't like 80s Queen, but keep insulting words away, will you? The Cross and Brian's, Freddie's and Rog's solo works are sometimes interesting, sometimes they did great songs, but... they're only an addenda to Queen, they're all in Queen's shadow and they only make it when they're the closest to the Queen style (Brian's Back To The Light album or Freddie songs like Man Made Paradise, Made In Heaven and I Was Born To Love You). Anybody agrees with me on that point of view? |

A) "Whole Lotta Love" is a GREAT song. B) "Innuendo" is not 1000 times better than "Kashmir," if it is better at all. |

to add my opinion. i love led zep, but always thought "whole lotta love" was dull.. much prefer "black dog" or "celebration day" etc |

A Queen spin-off, mediocre at best, vs. one of the most, if not *the* most influential rock band of all time? Not a chance. Most of the Cross' material is bland and simplistic rock music. Zeppelin paved the way for millions after them, and showed the world what putting on a rock concert was all about. |
