The article itself was okay, but he was definitely wrong about being the last Queen fan in America. Also, I like some of John's songs. They aren't all bad. |

Of course the article is tongue-in-cheek... |

Hmmm, well I agree on some of the things OTHER Americans might have felt about them backm then, but I don't think he should say he is the only American Queen fan. Many people in America like them, they just don't obsess over them as much as other countries seem to. |
Awesome-O _4000 03.01.2005 00:09 |
I'M obsessive!! Um, hehe... *grins sheepishly* |
jericho05 03.01.2005 00:19 |
tounge in cheek people. It was a satirical article not far off base for the state of things in the 80's. I was ridiculed for having Queen as my favorite band when Hot Space came out. I didn't care then and I care less now. He's got some points. |
Zander05 03.01.2005 02:14 |
I kind of see how he feels. In 1997 when Spice Girls seemed to rule the world, a lot of people couldn't understand why I listened to Queen (I was born in '86 so I missed out on a lot of the 80's). |
Lord Blackadder 03.01.2005 11:28 |
Spread Your Wings is one fo the greatest songs ever and whilst Queen singles didn't do that well in 80's America, most of them did still chart. |
deleted user 03.01.2005 16:20 |
I found this a long time ago. And, as far as I know, it's pretty true. Tho I am too young to remember music in the 80's, people who were very into the music scene have said that, to Americans, Queen's last album was Hot Space. |
Awesome-O _4000 03.01.2005 19:07 |

irisheyes 05.01.2005 08:03 |
The author of that article if full of himself and far off the ledge. True some people in America don't find Queen's music appealing and won't understand it, but I imagine it's the same everywhere. But while some may not like the music, this guy needs to open his eyes and stop being so damned bratty. There are thousands and thousands of websites and online communities here in America dedicated to QUEEN alone where fans get together and chat about their favourite songs, albums, members, and share pictures. One such is link The man has taken one to many dips into the glass if you ask me. His is by FAR the last American fan. |
Daniel Nester 17.01.2005 13:41 |
I wrote this article, and yes, I did mean it to be funny. And sad. When I began being a Queen fan in 1981 or so, and started buying new Queen albums with Hot Space, it *did* feel like I was the last Queen fan in America. At least in my 14-year-old mind. Of course I know it's not true, but you can't take away that feeling, what with Van Halen and AC/DC fans all around. And I just wrote the John thing to be funny. I love a lot of John songs. These are all from my books God Save My Queen, by the way...godsavemyqueen.com. Thanks for being interested in the first place, by the way. You're all entitled to your opinions. Bottom line is, we all love Queen. |

Well, now that I've read some of the more negative comments as opposed to the others who evidently know how to read a self-deprecating, tongue-in-cheek piece in a humor magazine, I have to say the most of you are complete idiots, or perhaps "playing dummy." I became a Queen fan when in 1980-81, just before Hot Space came out. Except for phone calls and postal mail, there was no way for me to connect with other American Queen fans. At all. One person points out erroneously, talking about Live Journal, etc., but there was no World Wide Web back then. There wasn't even email, or even faxes, around this time. So when I bought Hot Space, and proceeded to miss the tour and saw that album and all the succesive album flop on the US charts, it really did feel like I was the last fan in America. It would be years until the Wayne's World revival -- that didn't happen until I was finished college, and, especially after watching Freddie die for a couple years, it was too little, too late. Granted, I loved the movie, but it wasn't why I first got into Queen. I had been a diehard Queen fan for 11 years by then. So for you all to say I'm "full of myself," I say: Grow the fuck up. I've got more Queen fan street credentials, more bootlegs and rare 45s, more time logged in loving this band and everything about it, than all you naysayers can ever wish to have. You all have years to put in, through thick and thing, before you can say I'm "full of myself" or I don't have a right to write about Queen. I am a writer, and artist. And I can laugh at myself now, and see that, although Queen was and remain an essential part of my growing up, it wasn't the end of the world for me that Queen wasn't big anymore in America, and that they didn't tour here anymore, or they weren't as pervasive and all-encompassing as in Europe and the UK. But back then, when I was 13 years old, it did in fact feel horrible. But if there's one thing Queen's sensibility that taught me, it's to laugh at yourself, to have tongue firmly in cheek. Any Queen fan that doesn't understand that is missing out on a big part of the genius of Freddie and the Boys. The negative Queenzone people, by and large, are a bunch of grumpy-ass know-nothings who try to prove they are bigger fans than everyone else because they know the proper spelling of Farookh. And it's not only annoying, it's disgusting, it's anti-intellectual, it's against everything Queen holds dear, which is: Don't take yourself seriously, have a good time all the time, and leave them deafened blinded, and begging for more. Ya know, after reading this, it still does feel like I'm the last Queen fan in America. |
DoctorNine 18.01.2005 14:40 |
Daniel Nester wrote: But if there's one thing Queen's sensibility that taught me, it's to laugh at yourself, to have tongue firmly in cheek.I couldn't agree with you more. What was it that Freddie had said? I think it was, "I like to ridicule myself, I don't take myself too seriously. I wouldn't wear these clothes if I was serious. The one thing that keeps me going is that I laugh at myself." I do it every day. |
Krizzy 18.01.2005 14:57 |
Hey maybe U are the only Queen fan in America! Scary as hell! Hey Daniel how do U feel about the new line up and tour, just curious, O True Queen Fan? Krizzy ;o) |
Daniel Nester 18.01.2005 15:12 |
Hiya Krizzy. Sorry I sound scary, but someone has to stand up to all these Queenzoner bullies. And I get my gander up when it comes to my writing, because mine comes out of love, and their comments come out of grumpy hate. I'm psyched about the tour. Seeing Roger and Brian play live, I mean, they're maestros, geniuses, and I think it's high time they got out and played live. It won't be as musically diverse without Freddie -- it never could be -- but for a rocking great time, this event will have no equal. I just hope they come to the States! |
DoctorNine 18.01.2005 15:14 |
As do I. As long as I could afford it, I'd go. |
Daniel Nester 18.01.2005 15:18 |
I don't wanna sound too scary, but if they tour the States, I plan on living out of my Honda like a Grateful Dead fan and catching all of the gigs. My wife is terrified, but what are ya gonna do? This is a once in lifetime opportunity to hear the Red Special live! |
DoctorNine 18.01.2005 15:19 |
You have a good point there, Daniel... |
Krizzy 18.01.2005 15:43 |
Sorry Daniel I cannot relate to being that obsessed with just one band when there are soooo many great bands who are of Queen's era that are still touring. But I loved Queen then and will try (ahem) to accept the new iteration of Queen + even if is hard for me to swallow in many respects. I would love to see the musical when it goes on the road here in the States but that remains to be seen (literally), still it is good to hear that the old chaps are back in action! Cheers, Kriz |
Daniel Nester 18.01.2005 15:58 |
Yeah, I definitely have other music interests, but oddly they are not supergroup-oriented. I do love Van Halen. Queen's absence from touring here in the US, for me, makes the heart grow fonder. |
Krizzy 18.01.2005 16:05 |
You Daniel and millions of others, dear! |
DoctorNine 18.01.2005 17:32 |
As far as I know, Krizzy, WWRY is playing in Las Vegas, and will hopefully go on tour. Because they are only in Las Vegas, are they off-Broadway or a Broadway musical? I know that the Billy Joel one was Broadway, so I was just wondering... |

Fuck America. Oh that's right! I went there! If they don't appreciate a legendary band like Queen, they don't appreciate classic rock n' roll. |

Hi Daniel, Purchased your book in the summer of 2003. I was looking to track you down at the Dallas convention. Unfortunately, you weren't there. I know exactly how you feel. I think we are the same age, 36. I too got into Queen in the fall of 81 as I was entering the 8th grade. Queen was still riding high w/ the success of the Game. The original Greatest Hits & Under Pressure was still 2 months from being released. Also, based on reading your book and all the footnotes listed, I know you grew up in the Delaware Valley. I did as well. Going through the release of HS and the Works while in high school was less than fun. I know how you felt because I definately felt like the only Queen fan in the US. I knew more were out there. I saw them at the HS concert at the Spectrum. But in a time of heavy metal, Madonna & Phil Collins along with countless other bland "music artists" I felt I was on an island! We have faced the "Dark Ages" for Queen in the country & survived. All the young fans of today could never comprehend how bleak it was back then. Much like they could never comprehend a world w/out remote controls or cable TV or the internet. |
Daniel Nester 19.01.2005 17:54 |
Thanks so much for writing. I agree with you -- really don't think people know how bleak it was in the 80s for American Queen fans. I mean, looking back, it was *comically* bleak. If there was the web back then, we probably would have hung out, us being in the Delaware Valley! Instead, we both fought it out ourselves. So when I hear the wiseass tone of some of these Queenzoners, especially the young Americans, it's hard for me to hold back. They think the subject of Queen belongs to them and only them. We 36-year-olds have rights, too. Sorry to miss you in Dallas. I was all booked, and then a family emergency came up. Thanks for getting the book, too--a labor of love it was. |
DoctorNine 19.01.2005 20:43 |

The young of America tend to not care about what happened in the times before they were born, BECAUSE they were not born yet. They seem to think that they own everything, from cars and bikes to music, and they won't let it be accepted in the upper age groups (by that, I mean anyone older than them), which causes the disturbance. I personally do not know what it was like in the 80s, and never will, but that doesn't mean that people who are older than me (or younger than me)don't have the same rights and such as I do. As one of the young of America, I apologize to you, Daniel, and all of the others out there, and hope that you understand what I'm trying to say... I just can't seem to get the right words out. |
