I could name many, but of course I think highest of Brian May. But to name a few, Eddie Van Halen, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Slash... You know what pisses me off though. There was this program I saw "Top 10 Guitar Gods". Jimi made #9, Brian didn't even make the fucking list!, and you know who got #1? KIRK HAMMETT! He's great, but not #1 great, in my opinion. Fans know NOTHING! (Guitarists were voted on by music fans. Can we say RIGGED?) |

Jimi Hendrix Carlos Santana Brian May Jimmy Page Mick Ronson And not in any particular order either. Most people are like "Mick Ronson?????" But really, in actuality, he was very good. And come on people! Santana is underrated among the general public. Maybe not to musicians who know a thing or two, but the public tends to overlook his mastery. Of course my Brian would be on there, heh heh, and who can forget the two Jimi(y)s? I know I can't, lol. Cheers |

I don't agree with the_hero at all. Ritchie Blackmore may have been an inventor of several ways of playing the guitar in Deep Purple mark 2 but after that he hasn't been able to handle the fame, I suppose. For instance, he ruined numerous Rainbow tracks with his lazy, uninspired solos and way too simple riffs. Ritchie Blackmore isn't the talent you believe he is. |

Definitely some great guitarist have been listed in this thread...most notably IMO Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, John Petrucci.....but I can't believe no one has mentioned Eric Johnson. The guy is a genious! I'd like to list some of the greatest blues players... Buddy Guy, Albert King, and Albert Collins. Ask any one of the mentioned guitarists in all of these many lists and I'll bet 99% of them will site at least one of these blues masters as an influence. If you haven't heard any of these players, I would highly recommend that you check them out. |

Is Brainbox really the only thing you've ever heard Jan Akkerman play on? I didn't even know they had any albums. Check out Akkerman's work with Focus, particularly the albums In And Out Focus, Moving Waves, and Focus 3. As for my list of the ten best, it looks something like this today: 1. Brian May 2. Jerry Garcia 3. Steve Hillage 4. Steve Hackett 5. Steve Howe 6. Terje Rypdal 7. Pat Metheny 8. Frank Zappa 9. Ralph Towner 10. Anthony Phillips I had to throw in Metheny, Towner and Phillips to shine some light on some jazz and acoustic guitarists. This list could be completely different tomorrow, though. |

If you really want to hear Rothery in full flight, you should check out the albums Misplaced Childhood and Clutching At Straws. Also, check out the song Easter, on Season's End, which features a superb solo. Another player in the same vein who is well worth checking out is Mike Holmes, who plays in a band called IQ. These guys were contemporaries of Marillion's, playing at the same places as they did in the early 80's. The difference is Marillion got signed to EMI, and IQ have been releasing their albums on indie labels (actually, their own label, Giant Electric Pea, for nearly 15 years now). Anyway, if you like 80's era Marillion, you should check out IQ's albums, particularly The Wake, Subterranea and Dark Matter. Dark Matter was one of the best progressive albums of 2004! |
