When I was in school and the kids found out I was a Queen fan, they would always call the band a "fag band" or a bunch of queers. BUT they would sing songs like "Champions" or "Bo Rhap" just the same. I'm not gay but it's amazing that people are homophobic in this day and age. Yes. But some of them turned straight back when John Deacon left in 1985 to join supergroup Arcadia. Then it was the gay fans against the straight ones. For reasons I'd rather not get into, this culminated in 6 deaths at a Pink Floyd concert in 1987. That reminded of something from about three weeks ago that completely made my day. On my way back to work after lunch I drove up behind a 30 something guy- obviously gay even from a block away- walking down the sidewalk carrying this wildly ostentatious animal print woman's handbag. I'm not going to be able to articulate this properly, but there was something so joyously FTW about this guy and his slightly effeminate strut and his crazy handbag that I laughed out loud in just happiness I guess. I slowed down and caught his attention and said something like "Dude, I don't know how you're pulling it off but you are ROCKIN' that handbag!". He laughed and we had a little moment there on the street, two strangers fleetingly sharing an understanding and his infectious seizing of a beautiful summer day. It was nice. I didn't think to ask if he was a Queen fan though. :) |
