In America, people are constantly making fun of Queen, and looking down on Queen because of Freddie's homosexuality. I was wathcing Vh1 today, and there was a shoe about celebrities coming out of the closet. While this show was on, they began to play Queen songs. It isn't that that was offencive or anything, but they just need to lay off!!!! Do any of you agree? |
love of my life 14018 09.12.2004 17:34 |
Wasn't there just a thread about this? I agree, though, it does suck, but you can't argue with all of the idiots in the world. People do need to get over it, it's pathetic that the very issue, among other things, lost Kerry the election, really. The US is doing a wonderful job earning its(our) reputation as the most homophobic contry in the world, but you know what? They can listen to their shite music all they like and we can be the priviledged few that love Queen. Their loss. I know there are other American Queen fans here, so it's not all of us..... |

Love Of My Life wrote: The US is doing a wonderful job earning its(our) reputation as the most homophobic contry in the world,I agree. I mean, the facts speak for themselves; in all 11 states where gay marriage was on the ballot in this year's election it was banned. It's really sad. The US has always been behind in abandoning prejudices, just look how long it took to fully end racism in the gov't. |

"America sucks..." I dunno, I think it's the military-industrial complex that sucks. Or blows. And all that entails. Anyway, President Eisenhower warned us about it in his farewell address January 1961. The result: laissez-faire morality and political correctness create a society driven by alternating cycles of amusement and consumption, driven by scapegoating behavior (read: racial prejudice, homphobia, etc), energized by sexual aggression. Basic capitalism. I'm so glad I can pop in a Queen cd, light another "cigarette", and let myself go... |

I think the US is just a slowly evolving culture. A Kurt Cobain quote might fit: "The world is run by dinosaurs. They will die, and we will move into their houses." |

Americans and MTV are hypocrites. I don't want to hear the times change crap! Freddie and the lads get cast out for dressing in drag while my fellow Americans enjoyed watching Madonna and the skank Britney lesbo lip lock! Queen rock! |

A lot of ignorant dinosaurs still see male homosexuality as a threat. They're blinded by their (wrong)-wing hate filled dogma. We're a slowly evolving species, and unfortuately, have to be patient while these people catch up. |

I'm an American too.... And that is how I feel. Not all of us (as I stated in the parenthesis that look oddly similar to these ones) are like that, but generalization can be true for some part. Cheers |

I'm from America and I have to agree somewhat! I LOVE QUEEN and I feel that Freddie's homosexuality had ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with the way he sang! People tend to pick on those who are different in the slightest ways and it really is a shame. The way I look at it is Who Cares!! What ever sexual preference Freddie had was his business and his business alone. That made him no less of a person. I'm looking forward to the day that I can meet him in Heaven!! |
Melancholy Blues 10.12.2004 05:32 |
americans are just way too paranoid and take things too seriosly. they obsess over the war and made way to much of a deal out of the whole superbowl incedent. i don't think as a whole that they are as accepting of other cultures and ideas as other countries are. they should stop acting like they rule the world and their opinion is always right, not that this is the people but rather those in charge |
DanielT 10.12.2004 06:34 |
Yes,in some ways. For instance: the arrogant way of pushing other countries and other thinking peolple. The government lies to make sense of war, but of course they need money and oil, because no other country don't cares so much about ökologie and ressources than america I think. Other point: Almost all countries avoid landmines except america. Buisiness is number one and worth to make the whole world die. This fallen society thinks that they will get wings while they fall. Anyway, this is the way people outside america see the politic. It has nothing to do with you people in it. I´m sure you as kind, peacefully, tolerant, nice etc. like everybody else. And in the past America did a great job and helped to build a free thinking world to live in... |
rendezvous 10.12.2004 13:22 |
I think some of them are just pure ignorant, some of them really don't like Queen's (or rock)music, but some of them are really narrow-minded double standard hypocrites. They are afraid to admit that a GAY man can actually sing better, perform better than their MACHO men in rock music. They feel threatened, so they have to label Queen as a gay band and try to ignore the greatness of their music and performances. Just take a look of Elton John case: He's gay, and a bitchy one actually. He is not only accepted by Americans, but also embraced. He's everywhere nowadays. Shows in Las Vegas, guest appearances in American idol and Extreme make over home edition, he's even talking with ABC for a sitcom based on his life. Recently, he even got the 27th annual Kennedy Center Honor for his lifetime contribution to American culture through the performing arts! They even call him "Sir Elton"(I know he's knighted, but still...) What's up with that? I think they just don't feel threatened by Elton, so he can do whatever he wants. So now tell me those people are NOT narrow-minded double standard hypocrites. |
deleted user 10.12.2004 14:08 |
Oh, Freddie always wanted to be a MACHO man... "give me, give me, body .... I want your body" |

It offends me when I am being bashed to the ground because of what the majority of Americans think. Not all Americans even know Queen to bash them. They are more interested in a lot of crappy music to even realise Queen. |

I'm from America and I saw the t.v show the other night as well. I believe they used Queen songs because Freddie was a well known openly gay man. It makes sense to use a Queen song in a show about coming out rather than, say, an Enimem song. Not all of us are homophobic here in America ;) Us non-homophobic people are working on getting the ignorant ones in line. :) |

U.S. policy sucks. The Bush administration sucks. The people (or a good deal) do not. People need to stop thinking of American people as Queen haters. I live here. They aren't. The American CRITICS are Queen haters. Within the last 15 years, Queen has enjoyed a resurgence in popularity, due to Freddie Mercury's death and Wayne's World. Their greatest hits, since 1981, have sold 7 million copies. Classic Queen has sold 3 million, their gold double-CD set has sold one million and approaching 2 million. Many of my friends like Queen. In fact, that's how I got into them. It may be true that Queen aren't considered giants of rock like they are over there, but that's because the American media and critics have been slow in coming around and acknowledging their importance and their influence. They have though; look at VH1, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame, even NME- they included Queen prominently in their glam issue, showing both very glowing and sometimes harsh reviews of the band- though the glowing ones outweighed the bad ones. Rolling Stone still dislikes them, but shit, like somebody else said, they consider Madonna and Public Enemy immortal, do we really want their ilk praising Queen? Now, I guess what is true is that in the Southeast, in some areas, they're practically non-existant from what I hear. This is due to hillbillies who listen to Lynard Skynard and country. I guarantee you, these people are not the type who like Pink Floyd or David Bowie or The Beatles or The Rolling Stones either. They're all too complex and too gay for them. You get some Metallica fans, Pantera, that type of metal, which in my opinion, kind of sucks. Perhaps only Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath you'll find, but that's about it. |
LadyMoonshineDown 11.12.2004 18:13 |
Hey hey hey QueenZeppelin! I agree with you.... US music critics are the problem, but there are Americans as well who feel the same. Come now! I'm an American, and I'm saying that. You have a good point about what is 'good music' and who the 'best bands' are to music critics. But you cannot say that ALL Americans do not feel the same way, because many do. And many in Europe, in Japan, in Italy, in well....all over. We aren't bashing American people. It's just that this topic is what it is about......America, and the American people. Woo. Cheers |
LadyMoonshineDown 11.12.2004 18:28 |
Yeah. At least in 2000, we knew that it was rigged in Bush's favor, despite the opposition towards him. But this time.... The American people DELIBERATELY chose him. Half of them anyway. Cheers |

It's also the slimmest majority since Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and the third closest electoral vote in the last 160 years. And LadyMoonShine, I didn't say there was nobody in America who didn't like Queen. There are a lot of people in the world who do not like Queen. I'm just saying that the majority of America, even those who are not fans of Queen, don't think of them as being bad or homosexual talentless idiots. Of course, some do, but they are a minority. |

Hi, I'm Holly, I'm American. I'd just like to say that Queen is my most favorite band, Freddie is my hero, and not everyone here shares the same feelings as the Americans who are in control of the media. I'd also like to say that I am very proud to be living in the state of Massachusetts where gay marriage is being debated and most of the people in this very liberal state are for it. Yes my country is gaining the reputation as a very homophobic nation, but what our country's legislature decides as far as gay marriage goes doesn't affect you so you can lay off as well. |

I agree .... it's not only a problem in America. When I went to school in Austria in the early 90s I had the same problems, of course there were many pupils (especially girls, hehe) who liked Queen, but there was the same amount of students who really hated Queen (especially with Heavy Metal and Death Metal in its prime back then). But today some of them (now being 27 or 28 years old) say to me they were wrong then. |

What sorta irritates me is that the Rolling Stones had a bisexual lead singer as well, and all of the Stones dressed in drag occasionally, yet they're not seen as a "gay band." There's nothing different about Queen, except the name. |

I'm an American and love Queen.I could care less about the bands sexual prefrence .I'm a fan of good rock n' roll.Period.Sexual preference is a personal issue.I think it wrong to stereotype people based on the country they live in.I also think we are all created equal and no human has the right to judge another.Just my humble opinion |
