Seen on Billboard.com: Edited by Thomas Walker - November 13, 9:05 PM ET The world of rock and roll has always been an incestuous one, and now things seem to be getting worse. After a long courtship, Brit popsters Oasis have announced that Zak Starkey will be manning the drum stool for 2005. Zak of course, is the son of former Beatle Ringo Starr, (whose music has long shaped the image of Oasis), and former drummer with the latest incarnation of classic rock act The Who. Starkey's departure translates into yet another change behind the kit for guitarist Pete Townshend and vocalist Roger Daltrey, as they have engaged in a Spinal Tap-esque game of drummers du jour since the passing of Keith Moon in 1978. Adding to The Who's staffing misfortunes is the confirmation that fill-in bassist Pino Palladino will supplant John Deacon in Queen, effective immediately. As the futures of Oasis and Queen look to be in place, focus now falls firmly on The Who. The twin defections come at a precarious time for the group as a long rumored album of new material is slated for release in the Spring. While various names have been circulated as replacements for Starkey and Palladino, sources close to Townshend acknowledge a short list of "probable candidates" has been hastily assembled, contingent upon availability. It is reported that Mick Fleetwood and Ian Paice, formerly of Fleetwood Mac and Deep Purple respectively, stand at the forefront for drum duties, while the bassist highest on the list is Jeff Ament of Pearl Jam fame. No date has been established for final staffing decisions, but the Townshend camp is said to be hopeful that the new line-up will be confirmed by Christmas. |

Interesting. At first, I thought it said that Deacon was going to play bass for The Who. I had to reread it a few times before I got it. However, I think this may just be another rumor. I found this on The Who's website about a week ago: Rumours that Pino Palladino and Zak Starkey are going to discontinue working with the Who in the future are not true. All great musicians like Zak and Pino work with a wide range of artists. They are in constant demand and obviously eager to expand their musical boundaries. However, the work they do together under the Who banner has a special and unique place in their life and one that they value musically the most. They are regarded by Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend and myself, and I am sure by the majority of their fans, as important pivotal members of the incredible touring band still billed as the Who. At no time have Roger and Pete considered using any other musicians to record or tour with. We all feel we still have much to offer and achieve as a group and were looking forward to completing an album for eventual release next year. Bill Curbishley Manager |

Zak was supposed to be touring with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page in next year's Led Zeppelin tour...or so I thought, until I read this.... Zak in Oasis? Imagine the fistfights!! Hair flying all over the place! Noel and Liam in jail! (again) |

One question: who is Pino Palladino?? |

Pino Palladino is a session bassist who recorded with Daltrey and Townshend on some of their solo stuff, as well as with David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame. When John Entwistle died in June 2002, a call was placed to Pino from Vegas to Philadelphia, asking him if he could play bass for The Who on their tour, which was to start the day after Entwistle's death. He agreed, and flew out for some pretty intensive rehearsals, considering the tour was restarted three days later. He did a great job considering Entwistle's extreme talent, and he also recorded some new songs with The Two--er, The Who. I hope he and Zak stay on, as they seem to have all finally gelled as a group, turning into The Who Mark 75 or whatever they're at now. And, as far as I know, Zak was never going to play drums with Page & Plant - I'm sure they'd rather get Bonzo's son Jason instead. Oasis don't deserve Zak. |

Ringo's record producer, Mark Hudson, was at a Beatles convention that I helped organise last month and during the Forum discussion he was asked about Ringo's children, and that's when I found out about Zak joining Page and Plant. |

good grief, I am cringing at the thought of all this talk. I think they ought to hurry up and release that boxed set for the fans, before the memory of Queen is destroyed by all these collaborations and WWRY versions !!!! *teddy shudders at the thought of what may happen* |

yes, did i hear box sets, that's what i'm waiting for, any unreleased freddie songs worth hearing will be on those box sets, if brian and roger release anything new they could also be released on them, it's a perfect excuse to record new material without having to make a whole new album, just put them on the box set and be done with it. |

Um...HELLO?! What are you talking about Zak playing with Page and Plant? Did I hear JONES too??!! Are you joking??!! I understood all three were doing solo albums and tours next year?! What's going on here?! |

Pino Palladino played bass on the recent UK Hall of Fame performance with Brian, Roger and Paul Rodgers, that's all. |

He also played on a couple of track on a "Royal Symphony Orchestra plays Queen"-album in the early 90s (produced by Curt Cress, Freddie's session drummer for MBG). Pino Palladino is a very renowned and proficient bass-player who actually can be considered as the Rolls Royce of session bass-players. Please also note that they've been replacing John Deacon for years now (Neil Murray, Steve Barnacle) and nobody seemed to complain too much. So it's no big thing if they're gonna hire Pino Palladino for future projects. If they're gonna continue properly again, they'll need a bass-player appropriate to the grandeur of the band. Pino Palladino certainly matches that description (unlike Steve Barnacle who was more like a Winebago than a Rolls Royce). |

QUEEN DO NOT EXIST ANYMORE ergo no one will replace anyone in a non-existing band. enough about this topic? |
Paul Mark 30.11.2004 13:12 |
Thats funny I could swear I saw a band playing on the UK Hall of Fame with the name "Queen" on their drum set. Seems like they exist to me... |
deleted user 30.11.2004 13:33 |
I could even see them playing with the "Queen" logo on the drum set in Hyde Park in front of 200.000 people... They wouldn't be QUEEN anyway. Damn, Queen are Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, Roger Taylor, Brian May. Queen no longer exist but in our recordings, memories, hearts and souls. |
GiantSpider 30.11.2004 13:34 |
Pino also played with Queen at Party In The Palace no? |
Paul Mark 30.11.2004 14:46 |
For crying out loud! As much many of you bitch and moan, Brian and Roger have and ARE going to continue using the name "Queen". If you dont like it I suggest you deal with it, cause your incessant whining is not going to change anything. |
LiveAidQueen 30.11.2004 14:58 |
I like Zak Starkey. |
Whatinthewhatthe? 30.11.2004 15:55 |
I love Ringo too!! :-)) A lot of us are taking things way too seriously about the simple name of QUEEN. It's a trademark; it's the name that will sell CDs and tickets, not May, Taylor, Etc or Half Of Queen or (ugh) Queen +. It's a name thing with Brian and Roger, it's the last hallmark of how things once were (notice I said "were", not "are") and the link to the past. In a strange way, for people to recognise them they HAVE to use it, even though Freddie's been dead well over a decade and John Deacon's been retired almost that long. We will simply have to accept their judgement; for it's all of us supporting them by buying their CDs and DVDs. If we weren't, then how would things look for QUEEN? Rather bleak, I'm afraid. If they will embarrass themselves by using that trademark, let them -- it's theirs to use so we can gripe more about how not politically-correct they are using it with half of the group technically gone. |

Hows this for an idea? Paul MacCartney ought to start off a group and call it the BEATLES !!!!!!!! Well - hell, dont worry the other members wont be in it - right ?????????? It really is Brian May and Roger Taylor OF Queen - not "Queen". |
Paul Mark 30.11.2004 17:00 |
Oh please! That is just the kind of over emotional clap trap that makes no sense. Pauls sitution is nothing like Brian and Rogers. Firstly Paul is a well known name he doesnt need to use the Beatles name to get attention. Secondly Queen were unique is that their line-up remained the same for so long. There are many, many, many other bands that had numerous line-up changes. Should they have changed their name each time?!? It would also be equally ridiculous of me to say that Axl is using the name "Guns & Roses" so why cant Brian and Roger use the name Queen? The fact of the matter is (and I am starting to sound like a broken record) there is NO debate here. They ARE using the name "Queen". Not they MIGHT use it in the future, they ARE using it. Like it or dont, it changes nothing. At the end of the day it will be up to the public to decide if they want to support the new Queen. Maybe it work (I hope it does) and maybe it wont. Let them make their own decision without crying and sounding like some outraged Freddie fanatic! |
teddybear 30.11.2004 17:14 |
well I ain't apologising for being a "Freddie Fanatic" and really they have not used QUEEN with another bass player and a "new" frontman - they have used Queen and had guest spots, and when they have recorded it has been as Queen +. It seems they may want to find a new bass player and a new frontman - and just call it QUEEN as a "new group" - but whatever, I guess without Freddie who was the "moet and Chandon" of singers - anyone else will be just vinegar? I guess I shall stick to the fine wines. |
Paul Mark 30.11.2004 17:18 |
Well thats fair enough. Freddie was a tremendous talent an no-one can take that away from him. In fact its quite likely that any future activities by Queen with a new front man will just remind the world how great a talent he was. In any case no matter what happens in the future, we will always have the great music of the past to listen to as well. |
teddybear 30.11.2004 17:23 |
Paul - well said, you are right about that - for certain :-)) |
teddybear 30.11.2004 17:45 |
Ha hahahahaaaa - just had a funny thought. Why don't they forget using QUEEN and just call it the "We Will Rock You Musical Tour"?????? Heavens knows we have heard enough about that ? LOL :-) |
