I've heard 5 different versions of Somebody To Love and I think that Freddies best vocal performance was the "We Will Rock You" version though the "Milton Keynes" is very close behind. I was wondering if anyone knows if Queen performed this on the "Works Tour"or "Magic Tour" and if so how was the performance?. It would have been interesting to hear Freddie perform it in 86.
It seemed that Freddie abandoned singing with vocal trills in favor of sheer power.
Yesterday I watched DVD of "We Will Rock You" and I think Freddie's vocals are totally as marvellous as the ones of MK. STL of it is also as fantastic as one of MK.
imho, perhaps WWRY version is the best performance, but if I read this just after I watched MK's DVD, I might write another reply.
A little of topic, but did anyone in the UK see "The X Factor" tonight? The same operatic guys who sang BoRhap (They're called _G4_) tonight sang Somebody To Love. Not bad at all.
Peace,
Adam.
freds voice was equaly great in we will rock you and MK, and your right in a sense with freds singing, in 86 he didn't have the range he had in the early 80's, but sheer power was amazing, he hit notes that are right up there with any era he did, i never heard a rock singer hit those type of opera notes as he did in wembly, it seems he was more into the opera thing at the time and it affected his rock voice.
It's an interesting point to make (Mike H) about Freddie being more into the operatic voice rather than his old rock voice. Opera singers don't sing with those little vocal scales (trills) though I liked it when Freddie used them. He never got carried away with them. I agree with Big Spender about the performances being fantastic, I just never heard Freddie use so many vocal gymnastics in one song and it really impressed me. I must say that Freddies Impromptu launch into the song at MK is more beautiful. His talents were so amazing.
The best version is the one from Sao Paulo- unfortunatelly Brian completelly messed up the solo- it's unbelievebly bad!!! But Fred's vocals are amazing- ad libs- second to none... Also Hammersmith'79 and Milton Keynes versions aren't bad...

I actually thought it was disaster... I was very disappointed, because after hearing them doing Oasis and other crap like that I said "they should do sth like STL..." Finally they did and... didn't like it...
The only thing I don't like about the lead voice is his vibrato. Never liked that much. Shame that they messed up the opening part, but the lead guy's voice was in danger after straining it the week before.
Peace,
Adam.
