Granted, I may be a little biased here since I'm not a U2 fan (a couple of their songs are OK), but doesn't it seem like they are trying to copy argubaly music's 2 most famous bands: The Beatles and The Rolling Stones
1. the rooftop concert in 1987, where "Where The Streets Have No Name" video was shot. They tried to perform a full set but the cops stopped them. Kinda similar to The Beatles back in '69, don'tcha think??
2. the concert on the flatbed truck down main street in NYC yesterday, just like The Rolling Stones did back in '75.
Any thoughts on this??

Actually, they tried to perform Streets about 4 times, plus one or two more for the crowd. It was supposed to be a video shoot from the beginning and not a full set.
As for your comment, they probably are immitating the Beatles and the Stones, but I don't think they really care. From their point of view, if you have to immitate someone, those are two excellent choices. When you look at some of the other original stuff they've done in their career, they're allowed to immitate someone once in awhile.
Yeah, I agree that they are an influential band, and although I'm not a big fan of their stuff, I still respect them as good musicians.
It just hit me today when I read where they played in NYC that it was coincidental w/ The Beatles and The Stones....And if they can pull an imitation of 2 bands and get away with it, who better than The Beatles and The Rolling Stones!
Playing on a flatbed truck was used by Jazz bands decades before The Stones.
There's absolutely nothing original in Rock 'n' Roll.

It'd be easier for people to see that U2 is a great band, if Bono's ego wasn't making a shadow over U2 itself.
The new album is good. Not mind blowing good, but good enough to listen every now and then.
Well thats what you think. What I think after listening to several of their albums over the years is that I'm not overly impressed and don't really understand why they are considered to be so good. "overrated shite" may have been a bit too harsh. Overrated wank would certainly be more appropriate.
I think I'd compare Bono to Maradona, you can't deny that they have (or at least used to have) great talent, but their own arrogance and holier than thou attitude is what makes most people hate them.
At least I'm glad that U2 left behind their extravagant days of electronica and techno junk. There was nothing more annoying that listening to Bono belt out awful out of tune falsettos, while he was dressed up like 'Mecphisto' with those silly horns. Watching Bono humping cameras during the Zoo TV and PopMart tours was perhaps one of the most pathetic things to watch... especially coming from a band who once stood for serious political, social, and humanitarian issues.
It truly made him look like a goddamn fool.
OK my 2 cents...
Brian_Mays_Wig has a right to not like U2, and his opinion is valid... yet he has to admit that U2 made an important contribution to music.
Alex Solan, has to cut it off on the personal insults... although Brian_Mays_Wig responded with insults as well. Also he has to admit that sometimes Bono has his head way too much up his ass.
Hope you guys can cut it off on the insults a bit.
I'm not the biggest fan of U2..or a fan really at all. Then again I haven't really taken the time to listen to them. I did have a laugh though when there was a U2 marathon on VH1 a couple of days ago and they were replaying parts of the ZooTV tour. Funny as buggery.
It has nothing to do with copying other bands, U2 are unique in their own way really, they have their own sound and unique way of dealing with an audience, love em!
i only have popcorn and coca cola. i´ll go and buy some more stuff right now. does anyone have a jumbo jet or something? i don't think my truck will do. heeheh! :P
