What in your opinion is the best piano part in any Queen song. For me it has to be It's A Hard Life... how about the rest of you? |

Freddie's piano is just fantastic and it makes Queen's music so special. Well but if we talk about the best part...how about the introduction of the Seven Seas of Rhye? |
Regor 22.11.2004 06:51 |
The middle section of "Love of my life" - even my father, who is a classical musician, is quite impressed by this passage. |

In addition to the fabulous examples already mentioned...I'd like to add Don't Stop me Now. Especially when they come into Brian's solo. It's just so full of energy and so much fun to listen to. |
Robin 22.11.2004 07:21 |
For me, hands down, it's Don't Stop Me Now. I also love the piano in Somebody to Love and Just You and I. |

Agnieszeq 22.11.2004 08:06 |
Well, but going back to the question, the best piano parts are for me intro of "Death On Two Legs", also intro of "Seven Seas of Rhye', "Somebody To Love", very easy but nice and recognizable piano part in "Bohemian Rhapsody". I also love "My Melancholy Blues", "Love Of My Life" and "Sail Away Sweet Sister". |

My favourites are Love Of My Life (the accelerando solo) and the intro of Lap Of The Gods. I also like a lot Melancholy Blues, it isn't difficult but the way he performed it (both studio and concerts) is marvelous. |

Farlander 22.11.2004 11:25 |
I'm pretty sure Spread Your Wings was Freddie. Looking at John's hands in the video where he is "playing" the piano, it's clear he doesn't really know what he's doing. |

I could not really decide. I always enjoy their improvisations... Take for instance Milton Keynes and the intro to BoRhap. I love this one. Also the few notes before Fred starts singing Save Me. And maybe this thread is a good place to ask the following: A friend of mine promised me to teach me how to play one song on the piano. I have about nil experience (just a few children songs) and I want to choose a Queen song. Are there any songs that are not too hard to learn? I always thought BoRhap is not THAT hard to play. Am I right? Is it worth the time? Otherwise, what would you suggest? |
AlleeCat 22.11.2004 12:44 |
I think You Take My Breath Away is lovely, I also have always loved the intro to Death on Two Legs... I think the prominent inclusion of piano in Queen's music is a huge reason I like them so much. Not Queen related, but I also really like Alicia Keys, she is immensely talented IMHO... writes, composes, plays and sings just like our boys. |
Norwegian Blue 22.11.2004 13:02 |

But if we're talking about Fm on piano then Millionaire's Waltz is great throughout. Brilliant intro and good bass from Deacon, too |
My Melancholy Blues 22.11.2004 13:22 |
Love Of My Life(especially the middle section) Take My Breath Away Death On Two Legs(especially the intro...) Nevermore Jealousy Somebody To Love My Melancholy Blues White Queen Bohemian Rhapsody Seven Seas Of Rye Hmm...very hard to choose one, but I go for "Love Of My Life" because he played it with Bechstein, the tone of which I love so much. And its middle section always takes my breath away and tears often come into my eyes... |

I love the piano in All Dead All Dead. And I was surprised when I found out it was Brian who played it. I also love My Melancholy Blues. But the best piano work is Bohemian Rhapsody. The main melody really is fantastic, still. And if you watch the making of Bo Rhap on GVH1, you can hear how brilliant the piano sounds. freddie was a wonderful piano player. Like Brian said, such force and feeling. |

He was really a marvellous piano player and he often played it classically. For example, the introduction of "Death On Two Legs" is so brilliant and even elegant, though it is a heavy tune. His piano tones make Queen music more distinguished from others. I also love his work of "Bo Rhap" but too many to choose! Very hard to decide one! He sometimes changed some introductions in the live shows, which made shows more fantastic. |

Seven Seas of Rhye (intro) Death on two legs (intro) Love of my life You take my breath away Somebody to love my melancholy blues Millionaire Waltz (intro...and well, most of it) I am sure there is more..... Freddie was an amazing pianist. I mean, most muscians now how to play some basic piano, but his playing was beyond simple and basic. Freddie was such a good pianist when it came to dinamic and phrasing. There are so many songs to mention, mostly from the pre-game era: My Fairy King: the piano solo is very cool. Black Queen: esp the dramatic intro and the sweet outro. Leroy Brown, Seaside Rendezvous, Sunday Afternoon: its fun to listen to. Death On TWo Legs: the intro is brilliant, the rest of the accompaniment is only very good. Love Of My Life: this one always makes me want to practice keys. Take My Breath Away, My Melancholy Blues: these two was such a joy to learn on guitar... We Are The Champions: once listen to just the piano part... Dont Stop Me now: wonderful intro, and one of the most ass-kicking beat of what Rock n Roll gave us. |

I think the piano on Millionaire Waltz is really good, especially the intro with Johns' bass line following along. Good Stuff. |
Sebastian 23.11.2004 09:24 |
The MOTP middle section might be Fred (Mercury) because Mandel is apparently the finale, not the bridge. But maybe he took it from there until the finale, it's possible. Regarding Spread Your Wings and the "he must have played it at least once" line: a) John could have written it in the guitar b) John could have written down the chords and showed them to Freddie c) Perhaps John could do the basic chords in the piano, as much as he could do the drum-pattern, but as a professional he left Fred and Roger to record them |
RockitPJ 23.11.2004 12:31 |
My favorite is on Bohemian Rhapsody during Brian's guitar solo. Especially when they performed this live at Wembley Stadium. The sound is very dramatic. |

Freddie is excellent in "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Seaside Rendesvous", "don't stop me now," (especially live), and "You Take My Breath Away"(although the song is quite simple, really) However, Brian was quite brilliant on the Piano as well. He does wonderful in "Save Me" and "All Dead All Dead". And whose to say whether John was good on the piano or not? John did play the keyboards for "You're My Best Friend" |

Brian's stuff isn't particularly challenging. The way he performed it is great though. Those songs kind of had a natura feeling with him at the piano, in the same way John had a great talent for rhythm guitar (and Roger too, in a different style). As for Best Friend, it isn't anything special. It doesn't mean it's bad, it's just what the song needs. And John played it simple, as it was required. |

rendezvous: Freddie recorded some impressive piano parts, but obviously Fred Mandel is a hell of a lot better so they let him record the MOTP outro. I've been playing piano quite seriously for 16 years and I still probably couldn't play the MOTP part without a lot of practise. There again, I might just be f*cking awful... |
Sebastian 24.11.2004 07:46 |
I wouldn't say Mandel was absolutely better pianist than Mercury, but he definitely knew his way better in the jazz & blues area (e.g. Living On My Own). |

I think Freddie often played "arpeggio" for introduction effectively. I also think he loved playing it, or he were good at playing it, or both... I forgot "Millionaire Waltz" and "Don't Stop Me Now". p.s.I love the way he changed some introductions being different from original ones in the concert. |

Hmmmm... *Nevermore. Absolutely pretty, and I adore songs that speed up and slow down. *Leroy Brown. Live (at Earls Court for example) the whole band (in this case, the piano) was just so perfect. *A New Life is Born. If you've ever heard the Miracle demo (the one with the ad-libbed sounding lyrics that I can't translate...) it's marvellous. A lot like Lily of the Valley and stuff like that, it's very pretty. I'm also very fond of the song Butterfly, the one Brian is tinkering with in the One Vision documentary. I hear Face it Alone has a scintillating part too... :P |

I love listening to Freddie on his own, particularly him trying to get 'there must be more to life than this' right. He attempts it 7 times, plays it then says its a wreck! Im an absolute beginner on piano, and if I had just played that like he did I would have fainted! That piece is my absolute favourite, but also when you hear bo rhap taken apart just down to the piano only, Freddies sense of timing was extraordinary, as Brian said it was asthough he had a metronome in his head. I adore the way Freddie played piano, he could make something bland sound full of emotion. He was great. |

The March of the Black Queen, no doubt. The piano in that song and the way it is incirporated is just awesome. |
