i dont know electric 6 i dont know anything about his music, about his life, if they're gay, etc now i know they made a cover of radio ga ga but i cant understand one thing: radio gaga was written by roger if one person want to make a cover of a copyrighted song, he has to get permission from the song writter my question is: how could electric 6 made that video? how could "queen" allowed electric 6 to make that video??????!!!!!!!!!! (the video shows electric 6 singer dancing on freddie's grave and making fun of his teeth and his clothing....terrible) that was a big mistake who knows electric 6??? here in argentina, they are nobody and sure, when peolple ask electric 6 about the video, they'll say that the video is a tribute to freddie mercury...that sucks! |
deleted user 19.11.2004 03:59 |
I agree, Electric 6 should be killed (although I am glad I haven't seen the thing). Why do Roger, Brian and John fail to prevent such things. Or can EMI do with these songs what they want?? I don't get it - if Brian and Roger really gave permission to these assholes, then both are poor greedy bastards. |
Mr Mercury 19.11.2004 06:51 |
Why would Roger want to ban it? He gets royalties from it... |
deleted user 19.11.2004 07:04 |
I guess you are right. But its a sad commentary on his loyalty to the musical legacy of Queen - and his "friendship" to Freddie Mercury. Roger has become a washed up looking asshole |
ogre t raylot 19.11.2004 07:18 |
I agree. Every singer or group whose ever recorded or performed a cover should be lined up against a wall and shot. |
Teo_torriate04 19.11.2004 07:23 |
As I understand the law of copyright, so long as the lyrics aren't changed, there's nothing anybody can do to stop releases such as this. Once a song's in the public domain, and so long as the appropriate royalties are paid it's a free for all. |
Teo_torriate04 19.11.2004 07:26 |
So there's nothing Roger could have done about it even if he wanted to. I'm sure he looks forward to your apologies. |
deleted user 19.11.2004 07:50 |
Oh, he sure could have done something - he could alt least have a statement released that he does not approve of this cover-version. But money seems to be more important to him (though he is a billionaire). Instead reviving his shaky solo career and do some better stuff, he continues to destroy Queen's legacy. And by the way, I'm not into music copyright law, but it seems strange to me that a song is in the public domain after twenty years - in the film industry its more than 50 and up to 80 years. |
Teo_torriate04 19.11.2004 08:08 |
Strange or not. It is a fact that the only right a composer has over his work is who records it first, whether it be themselves or someone else. Like I say, once it's in the public domain it's up for grabs. But the lyrics must remain unchanged otherwise it's deemed a new song. If Electric 6 had changed even one line from Radio GaGa, then the record could have been stopped and charges of plagerism brought to bear. |
BackToHuman 19.11.2004 09:33 |
actually, copyright law covers the lyrics, but not music. thus why "Weird Al" can (or rather, could, if he wanted) get away with parodying songs without seeking permission first. re: public domain -- i don't know about elsewhere in the world, but here in the US, Disney managed to get the public domain time from 75yrs to 95yrs ("Steamboat Willy" was due to go public domain this year, until Disney managed to get that changed). as every country has slightly different copyright laws, i believe Electric6 (or anyone else wanting to release a cover) would be required to meet everyone's requirements -- i.e. if GaGa is infact public domain in, say, Iceland right now, then it could leagally only be released in Iceland, or anywhere else where the copyright has expired. expiration of copyrights is extremely unlikely in the case of Queen. at least, anytime soon -- it's one of the benefits of continually remastering and rereleasing albums. if Gaga were, in fact, public domain, then, at the very least, anything 'The Works' and prior would be public domain, which really just means absolutely anyone could release it, legally. EMI could release a Greatest Hits package, but just as easily could Tooth&Nail, or Victory, or even Standard Recording. " Strange or not. It is a fact that the only right a composer has over his work is who records it first, whether it be themselves or someone else." -- that all depends on who holds the copyrights (not just songwriting, but also publishing, and permormance rights). not everyone is under the same contract, and not every record company's "standard contract" is the same. smaller independant labels allow artists to maintain all copyrights. some larger indies allow artists to hold on to everything but publishing (in other words, once an artist has left a lable, said lable is still allowed to release anything by that artist that is already in their possession). one final thought -- although i've not seen the video yet (is it online anywhere?), isn't it possible that what some are calling "disrespectful" some others would call "taking the piss"? as i say, i've not seen the video yet, but reading these desciptions makes it sound not much different from Wyclef & co. making off with the Freddie statue in their AOBTD vid. |
Teo_torriate04 19.11.2004 11:26 |
BackToHuman: I'm sure you're correct in what you are saying, and I am certainly no expert in copyright laws. It is the case, however, that to all intents and purposes anybody has the right to record any song he or she wants as long as notice is given to the songs copyright owners within 30 days of the recording being made, and before it is distributed. It makes no difference whether the song is 3 months old or 30 years old. All I was trying to do was to explain that it's quite possible for cover versions to be released by just about anybody without the endorsment, or even the knowledge of the original artists. The attack on Roger earlier in the thread was harsh, personal, and (in this case) patently unwarranted. |

it's the video that I find offensive and disrespectful...the audio is so-so.... |
JumpMan 19.11.2004 17:43 |
jesus. the video is a laugh. course it was going to piss queen fans off, we/you/they are a hostile bunch. the electric 6 have ended their set with that cover for about 4 or 5 years now, they love queen, and arent trying to be disrespectful. it's been said in an interview in fact the two bands dick valentine cites as his all time favourites are talking heads, queen and roxy music. the bit in the grave yard, maybe a bit distatseful yes, but he's not dancing on his grave in a 'haha fuck you' way at all. fucksake, calm down. it's a decent version of the song. and even the original video was a bit naff. |
brENsKi 19.11.2004 17:59 |
i stand by what is aid yesterday...i think there's more homage to queen than abuse intended...you'd don't dress up like someone and look that obviously stupid unless you do like the person concerned...and the grave thing? i think it's supposed to be a sad thing...he doesn't look like he's having a great time why are people on here so fucking anal/defensive/and ridiculously uptight "people get so uptight, i mean it's only a bloody record" - freddie Mercury - Milton Keynes 5/6/82 |
JumpMan 19.11.2004 18:06 |
indeed. it's a homage, albeit a bizzare one, the E6 love queen, dick and M have said. leave it be. |
brENsKi 19.11.2004 18:16 |
thought as much, even tried to say so the other night, cheers man perhaps this might shut the whiners up once and for all?....although i strongly doubt it there's some people on here who see every none-queen use of a queen song as a sacriledge.....some of em whine louder than a 747 coming in to land |

Caught it on tv a couple of nights ago. I swear my first reaction was "Whaaaa?" And a few seconds later I truly did laugh out loud! People take these things too seriously. But I said it when I heard it months and months ago, I still don't like what they've done with the song. Just sounds crap to me. Peace, Adam. |

I just saw it on telly and had to go change my undies. If you can't see the humour in that video then you're a miserable twat and deserve the glum life you lead. I haven't bought anything to do with Queen in a long time but Electric 6 have restored my faith in the utterly ridiculous. Praise da lord. fatty. |
The Left Testicle of Freddie 19.11.2004 19:13 |
The people on this board need to get some perspective. I saw the video for the first time the other day, and it's a tongue-in-cheek parody of the band and the song. But it's done with respect. Anything that could be called important in any field is open to parody. Why do so many people, especially Americans, interpret that as either anti-Queen, or, on the matter of the illegal war in the Middle East, anti-American? Stop being so oversensitive, you tarts! |
whiteman 19.11.2004 19:26 |
i know it s only rock 'n' roll but i like it????? i ain't seen this pile of shit you speak of and don't really want to who really gives a fuck there is always some asshole who wants to poke fun at some one with talent why give them the credit they DONT deserve by talking about it? talent will out my dear.................. |
mercuryrising 19.11.2004 19:58 |
i think that electric 6 was wrong by dancing on freddie's grave and making fun of his teeth. That wasn't a tribute to freddie they're just assholes for doing what they did. they should be shot for what they did. I think that Queen should sue them for what Electric 6 did. |
Adam Baboolal 19.11.2004 21:17 |
People can show a tribute in different ways. I still remember the great one by Vic & Bob (Comedy act in the UK) - one of them dressed as Freddie, teeth and all! The round on Shooting Stars was called, which star is caught in the lorrie's headlights? They even did another one where they dressed up themselves and some contestants for a specially shot video, as Queen. And it was a piss-take. But at the end, it was all about fun and their own way of giving tribute to their heroes. It's just a shame people don't recognise these things and take them completely the wrong way. Real shame... for them that is. Peace, Adam. |

excuse me people fisrt of all, this is a discussion forum each one can say what he want, and no one is better than the others just for thinking in a different way. i dont think this video is a tribute. i could think about the song as a tribute to queen but, tell me now, did anybody make a video: -dancing on lennon's grave? -costumized like elvis on his last days (fat and drunk)?? -with a blond wig like curt cobain, shooting his head?? NO...I DIDNT SEE THAT. WHEN YOU MAKE A TRIBUTE TO SOMEONE YOU ADMIRE, YOU DONT MAKE FUN OF HIM YOU TAKE THE BEST OF HIM, AND YOU SHOW IT TO EVERYONE, BECAUSE YOU WANT THEY TO SEE WHY FREDDIE (IN THIS CASE) IS SO BIG AND WHY HE IS A FUCKIN'AND GIANT LEGEND taking a look on the video, i think for electric 6 is more important the big theets, the moustache and the clothes than freddie's voice and talent i think you dont admire someone just for having big theets and a moustache fucking idiots!!!!! get a life |

King mercury WHINED: -costumized like elvis on his last days (fat and drunk)?? -with a blond wig like curt cobain, shooting his head?? ....and he wasn't dressed up like merucry heavily caked in makeup looking gaunt dying of aids either was he? f-f-s - get a life! he did a parody of a band HE LOVES showing the lead singer in his prime of life. and E6 have said they love queen - and he clearly wasn't dancing on his grave- the grave is a backdrop - look again people on here are so f***ing narrow-minded (which is ironically-"queer", when you consider the lifestyle of the lead-singer) it really is so very very sad to condemn others as "mocking" when they clearly are not...some of you must have a patheticall-sad existence if you have nothing better to do with your lives than defend everything your twisted minds perceive as being anti-queen your lives are passing you by, while you protest about things thta don't merit protest....there's starving people in africa, forced abortions in china, war in the middle-east, countries slaughtering their own in the name of civil war - please people go find yourselves a worthwhile campaign |

I don't think it's a particularly good cover but the video more than makes up for it. Funniest thing I've seen in a long time. Canadian May Fan 20.11.2004 13:48 |
I take great offence to the attitude some people have about the fact that Radio Ga Ga was even covered, never mind that this video was made for it. What justification can you possibly give for murdering someone just for performing a song they like? By that logic, someone who simply sings along to the radio should be lynched. That's just arrogant, and dare I say facist bullshit. And don't get so wound up over the teeth thing either -- let's face it, Freddie DID have teeth that could shatter a mirror! |
Óli Gneisti Sóleyjarson 20.11.2004 17:39 |
Yeah, Freddie would have been upset, the bulge in his pants should be bigger and he was a cat person so the dogs are very out of character. Otherwise, not offensive. They didn't even make his teeth huge, just Freddie-big. |
Green Banana 20.11.2004 17:50 |
I thought the poodles resembled Brian personally. And this video was very much in vein of the other Electric Six videos. Ever seen Danger! High Voltage or Gay Bar? Electric Six don't do serious videos. I would have been dissappoined if they had, their last two videos were funny as hell. |

I just have to say, that the group of people that danced on "Freddie"Mercury's" Grave"will have a day when they wished that they shouldn't have even thought of doing that. He was one "Hell" of a "man" & an "Artist". God makes us all different. So what his "teeth" wasn't perfect, that is what made his voice. No one is perfect, but "The Lord"Jesus'christ"! One day you will cry out for help, & maybe someone will "Dance"on" "your"Grave", instead of paying their respects"to"You"!!!!! P.S.Get Your Life together, and quit making fun of people."God" "says" "not" "to" "judge" "other""""""people" you need to get into "practing" what "you" "preach"!! |

I am not shocked at all ! I loved Electric 6 debut album and I really think people who are offensed by this video didn't knew them because they are by essence provocative & make fun of every one. My opinion is that Freddie would love this. He had a great sense of humour and I'm really sure he prefers this tribute than his statue in Montreux. |
Óli Gneisti Sóleyjarson 20.11.2004 19:51 |

I DONT THINK FREDDIE WOULD LOVE THIS VIDEO WHAT KIND OF ARTIST HAVE TO BE CUSTOMIZED LIKE FREDDIE MERCURY JUST TO RECORD A VIDEO? A GOOD ARTIST USE HIS IMAGINATION. FREDDIE LOVED JIMMY HENDRIX. FREDDIE LOVED AND ADMIRED LIZA MINELLI. AND (RIGHT ME IF IM WRONG) I'VE NEVER SEEN FREDDIE CUSTOMIZED LIKE HENDRIX, DANCING ON HIS GRAVE, OR CUSTOMIZED LIKE LIZA. SORRY PEOPLE, THIS VIDEO ISNT A TRIBUTE. I'M NOT SAYING THAT ELECTRIC 6 DONT ADMIRE QUEEN. I'M SAYING THAT THIS FUCKING VIDEO DONT HAVE A LITTLE RESPECT TO ONE OF THE GREATEST SINGERS IN ROCK HISTORY. AND I THINK (THANK GOD), IN 30 YEARS THERE WON'T BE A BAND WITH HIS FRONTMAN DRESSED LIKE ELECTRIC 6 SINGER, MAKING A TRIBUTE TO ELECTIRC 6, BECAUSE ONLY THE GOOD BANDS DESERVES TRIBUTE (AND RESPECT) |

my internet is finally fixed and after months and months of not being able to post, i finally can... is there something wrong with a lot of people?! i know people are allowed opinions and what have u, but grow up a bit. Did freddie ever dress up as and dance on either the graves Liza Manelli and Jimi Hendrix? No, he did not. However, had he or Queen covered and released a song by either of these acrs, Im sure he wouldnt still, but he of Queen would have had their own way to pay tribute to these people. All Electric Six, and moreso Dick Valentine and the directors of the video were doing was paying tribute to Freddie and the boys. He wasnt "dnacing on Freddie's grave" as you put it so negatively, it was supposed to be Freddie's ghost coming up from his own grave, dancing. And as for their disgraceful piss taking off Freddie by wearing a fake moustache and a couple of false teeth and a leotard or whatever - its just a joke!? No different from cover bands dressing up, no different from that fella on Stars In Your Eyes a few years back... he wore false teeth! i've lost myself in my rant, so im going to finish before it gets too confusing. tho, fair enough if u dont like the song, every person to their own, but just get a clue and grow up a touch |

I've been listening to Queen since 1979 - so I consider myself to have a long relationship with the band and their music. I think this video is excellent. Very funny. Its clear that Electric 6 are fans of Queen. Freddie was not a dry shite - he would have 'got it' if he were still around. I'll be interested to see if "Bri" has any comment to make on his blog. |

freddie (and sometimes the boys)has quite often "dressed up" - IWTBF viedo was a coronation street pastiche and the bit of "the fawn" in the same vid is another case to point...all artists do it, all the time... and that doesn't make it disrespectful eventually, the anal/small-minded and downright insecure amongst us will eventually see the light...let's hope that this - the final word on this subject might clear things up. there is an old expression and i'm shouting it for those who still fail to see the point IMITATION IS THE SINCEREST FORM OF FLATTERY look it up people - this subject is now closed |
