Roger Taylor of Queen is one of my all time favorites. Roger could do alot with one bass drum, I sensed a bit of John Bonham in his playing. He said he didn't do drum solos but what do you call the Jazz and The Game tours' tympani drum solo. He would have kicked Carl Palmer's ass(as much as I like Carl) in a tympani duel because if you watch the WWRY DVD, Roger was going all over the place on the tympani drums and his drum solo before the tymp solo kicked ass. Other favorites are Neil Peart of Rush, John Bonham, Keith Moon, Phil Collins(best left handed drummer ever!), Nick Mason of Pink Floyd is great too(watch Pink Floyd at Pompeii) |

I think that Roger Taylor is the best drummer ever. That's so difficult to sing and drum at the same time and I think he does that VERY well. He's such a great drummer!! He's my favorite. And my 2nd favorite is Ringo Starr because he's so great !! |

As Grapefruit said earlier, how many drummers do you know that can sing and play as well as Roger?? Not many. I remember going to see Brian live in 93 and he introduced Cozy Powell as the greatest ever drummer - ouch! All Cozy ever did was play double bass with a few skins inbetween, im not saying that he didnt do a good job though, but Eric Singer was better. Bonham, Taylor, Bill Ward and Lars Ulrich are my faves. |

I don't agree that Bonham was great at all. Maybe at soloing (ONLY), but as an ensemble player, Bonham was sloppy & pretentious. Zep's middle period albums (III, IV, HOTH) especially were littered with over-zealous, poorly executed, sloppy fills. Terrible synchronization, where the beat either gained or lost huge amounts of time, and you NEVER hear examples of that from Roger. Nor from Bruford. Nor from a lot of other precision players. Bonham was lucky to have been in such good company. Keep the goddamned beat. Who cares how well you solo? That's just sonic masturbation, after all. |

and now for some other drummers. I noticed that someone mentioned Dave Grohl, which is a good call, he is indeed an amazing drummer, definitely in my top 10. To those who have disagreed with the inclusion of Mr Bonham Snr, I would have to side with you, I've always found his playing rather uninspiring, but then again his use of a single kick instead of two is something to behold. our good friend Mr Taylor is indeed a fantastic drummer, less technical than the likes of Neil Peart, Steve Smith and Danny Carrey (another fantastic underated drummer) but he has always been able to play with a certain melodic sensibility, his fills are always so perfect and he always has great dynamics. The way a lot of the slower songs build up and dip down in such a fantastic way is due to Rogers innovative and rhythmic fills. For those reasons he is one of my personal favourites. Some other drummers who I think are absolutely fantastic are: Ian Paice, as mentioned above, absolutely fantastic, his one handed drum rolls are so much faster and more defined than most people using two hands. Keith Moon, His powerful and melodic drumming is without question the most exciting drumming ever to be put onto plastic, and the boy knew how to have a damn good time too... Bill Ward, A bit laidback in feel, but unbelieveable power, metal wouldn't be what it is today without his chops. Zak Starkey, He's been playing with The Who now for a number of years now, and by god can that boy drum, he plays like a manic cross between Keith Moon and Ringo Starr (funnily enough the two that taught him how to play the drums) and it absolutely fantastic, powerful when he needs to be and then gentle and melodic at other times, the perfect complement to Townshend and Daltrey. Danny Carrey, Again as mentioned before, along with Dave Grohl, he has to be one of today's best rock drummers, the timing and feel of a lot of Tool songs is insane, and he keeps it all together without sounding wanky or boring. |

I was just about to say that, Bob. And GonnaUseMyPrisoners...try listening to 'Fool In The Rain'. I'm a drummer, and have been so for a few years now, and I still can't manage to do what Bonzo does there. The man's got POWER...try listening to some of the live shows, as he sounds utterly amazing there. Everything he's done was done with a snare, one bass, a floor tom, and one mounted tom...a few cymbals, and that's it. And I don't see the appeal that Nick Mason has...maybe I haven't listened to Floyd in a while, but he was really just sort of...bleh. He always bored me and never caught my eye as a very exciting drummer. I still love Floyd and their innovation, but calling Nick a great drummer is like saying Roger Waters is a great bassist (apparently, David Gilmour played about as much bass as Roger did...). But Moonie is still my man. |

Lars Ulrich???? This is so ridiculous! Mike Portnoy is the man! |
iljaiya 19.11.2004 07:50 |
Indeed Mike Portnoy is probably the best (have a look at link to see what I'm talking about, I can't remember Roger Taylor winning any drumming awards). The only one that could probably compete with him is Virgil Donati from Planet X. So people please just stop it! Roger Taylor was a good drummer, singer and songwriter, but he was/is definately NOT the best drummer. As said Bonham, Peart, Paice, Powell belong to the best ever. "I think that Roger Taylor is the best drummer ever. That's so difficult to sing and drum at the same time and I think he does that VERY well. He's such a great drummer!! He's my favorite. And my 2nd favorite is Ringo Starr because he's so great !!" So f*cking funny! Ringo Starr absolutely sucks as a drummer! "As Robert Plant said during the Tribute "Roger Taylor is the best drummer of all time" which is kinda harse when you have been in a band with John Bonham... RIP John" He was only being polite. And also people claiming that Ullrich is the best are wrong. Although I love Metallica, Lars makes too many mistakes live. |
Jjeroen 19.11.2004 09:19 |
'Course he was being polite! Wow, RT is a great drummer indeed. But your right, naming Ringo Star makes it very hard to take his remark seriously... Ringo was nice in his own right, but I don't think there will ever be a discussion about him being one of the best drummers ever... |
Lord Blackadder 19.11.2004 10:17 |
BONZO! The best drummer he was indeed. But Rog wrote better songs. Like Brian, he may not have been best guitarist ever in some minds, but he wrote the best songs. Tie Your Mother Down is a brilliant riff. So is Hammer To Fall. He is so overlooked and unappreciated as a songwriter. |

Yep, both are fantastic drummers ! Dont want to be the killjoy, but I think one can not name the BEST, as most of those mentioned are great in their respective fields and have had a major contribution to their bands sound. Some of my favourites are John Bonham - Listen to him. He defined Rockdrumming. No discussion. ;-) Stewart Copeland - Amazing versatility, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Punk. Even the hardest Punk songs are jam-packed with little breaks and gimmicks. Roger Taylor - Pomp and Power but tight and precise. He is as much Queens sound as Brians guitar is. Thats why Queen is the cream pie of rock. Of course there are all the Manu Catchés, Simon Phillips', Vinnie Colaiutas and so on, but I'd stick to those who were permanently within a band and thus part of a creative unit. Not hired ! (which in no way limits the technical abilities of those aforementioned) |
Soul Brother 19.11.2004 10:29 |
Without a doubt the best technical and skilled drummer on the planet is Neil Peart....quite simply the skill this man has is amazing and I challenge anyone to watch any of his playing (Rush Live in Rio is the latest Dvd) to watch and disagree. What we seem to be saying however is that there are different qualities which make up your 'favourite' drummer and, hey, let's get scientific about this the following criteria could apply: Out of 10 per category TECHNICAL SKILL: Obvious, based on level of skill displayed and technical brilliance/difficulty of drum licks/tracks. "ATTITUDE": General coolness. STYLE: Unfashionable git, interestingly dressed or even high fashion supremo CHARACTER: Bubbly, nice, fun = high, boring curmudgeon = low COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Articulate artisan or clumsy ape like creature. |

GonnaUseMyPrisoners 19.11.2004 18:29 |
To the 2 people who politely pointed out Bonham's strengths, you have points... BUT... both of your examples were outside of the time-frame (albums) I cited. In Through The Out Door was very, very good, albeit more rhythm-based than previous releases. Fool in the Rain, though, does have some real synch/tempo problems. I don't recall any weird stuff on Presence nor Physical Grafitti, though. But those are LATE period. Royal Albert Hall (1970) was early period. I stand by my original statement that his ensemble drumming was often completely and inexcusably marginal during the middle period (III, IV, HOTH). And by marginal I mean sloppy. Roger was always more accurate, and I thought he really had a talent for clever transitional fills, dynamics, & I always admired him for adding vocals on top of it all. Roger hated soloing, though, so which is more important? All I know is I can't even listen to Moby Dick anymore it's such a bore... |
Lester Burnham 19.11.2004 20:25 |
Fair enough. Being a drummer, I find the 'Moby Dick' drum solo excessive and boring, but I still get chills up my spine when I hear 'When The Levee Breaks'. And there are little nuances about Bonzo's drumming in 'Rock & Roll' which are difficult to hear; I can't even do that damned solo, and I've been practicising it for nearly five years. Personally, Bonzo is sheer power, while Moonie is more about personality and show - and that's why I feel Moonie is one of the best ROCK drummers ever. I will NEVER understand why Nick Mason is considered to be a good rock drummer, at all. I find him to be a great snooze, and he hardly gets any more inventive than a typical rock backbeat. |

Okay, here are a couple of these, but I had to change up the categories: Roger Taylor: TECHNICAL SKILL: 5 SPEED - 7 TIGHTNESS: 9 CREATIVITY - 7 VERSATILITY - 6 IMPROVISATIONAL SKILL - 5 STAGE PRESENCE: 4 INNOVATION: 3 (i was too harsh with a "0" before) John Bonham: TECHNICAL SKILL: 8 SPEED - 9 TIGHTNESS: 9 CREATIVITY - 10 (what he could do with five drums!) VERSATILITY - 8 IMPROVISATIONAL SKILL - 9 STAGE PRESENCE: 8 INNOVATION: 9 Neil Peart: TECHNICAL SKILL: 10 SPEED - 10 TIGHTNESS: 10 CREATIVITY - 9 VERSATILITY - 8 IMPROVISATIONAL SKILL - 5 (he's just so damn tight!) STAGE PRESENCE: 3 (if only he'd acknowledge the audience, just once!) INNOVATION: 10 (i have never seen a more innovative and perfectly structured drum solo) Mike Portnoy: TECHNICAL SKILL: 10 SPEED - 10 TIGHTNESS: 10 CREATIVITY - 9 VERSATILITY - 9 IMPROVISATIONAL SKILL - 8 STAGE PRESENCE: 10 (without a doubt, the most entertaining drummer i've ever seen) INNOVATION: 7 Ringo Starr: TECHNICAL SKILL: 4 SPEED - 5 TIGHTNESS: 10 (bootleg collectors - has he ever messed up?) CREATIVITY - 7 VERSATILITY - 6 IMPROVISATIONAL SKILL - 5 STAGE PRESENCE: 6 INNOVATION: 9 (he paved the way) Additions and modifications are welcome, of course! I think the only criteria is that you have listened to your drummer for a long time, both in the studio and live, and that your ratings aren't biased because the drummer is your favourite. Honest stuff only. |

Actually, we're down to reducing music to a race again. Who's better than who is nonsense when looking across genres. Rog is a fabulous drummer with an unmistakable sound - it was fab to see him on Hall of Fame, and he looks as if he's lost a lot of weight. C'mon now, he WAS getting a bit pudgy.... But his sound that night was still intact - makes a kit sound like the voice of God. But here goes anyway. IN THEIR OWN WAY, the following are fab and groovy drum-tastic sticksmen: Stewart Copeland (now listen carefully to his stuff before commenting. the man aint a drummer, he's a percussionist!); Anything live by Moon the Loon is worth a listen; Simon Phillips and Jody Lindscott. Enuff said.... |

Roger Taylor is my personal favourite. He is really the best drummer for in a band. His solo's sound great, but they aren't very difficult for a drummer with experience. Roger is really a good drummer for in a band and sometimes he gives a solo. That's a great drummer. He was very precise and still drums with a lot of energy. It's not about how difficult someone can drum, but about his beat. And Roger had very good beats, sometimes simple (Save me) and sometimes difficult beats (Dragon attack , sheer heart attack, staying power). I also love his accent with his hi-hat when he hit the snare drum. Also his drumkits looked very cool. They were very big and with a lot of stuff on it. I love his chinas. Other great drummers are : Cesar Zuiderwijk (Golden Earring) , John Bonham (Led Zeppelin)and Phil Collins. |

Nick Mason is good too. Watch Pink Floyd at Pompeii and he was at his finest performance as a drummer. During One of These Days, his drumstick goes flying out of his hand and continues to play whilst he grabs another in no time flat. Also, on The Division Bell tour he played Astronomy Domine like he did in 1969 and his playing in 1994 was fantastic. If I pick fave guitarists they are David Gilmour and Brian May(tied), then Jimmy Page, then Hendrix(his drug abuse destroyed his playing by 1969 IMHO), then Angus Young, Glenn Tipton, Joe Walsh, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Reeves Gabriels(Bowie's guitarist in the 90s and one of the best to use a whammy pedal) |

Now that I think of it, Eric Clapton once said that Brian could do things w/ the guitar he couldn't even begin to do... so this goes to show Queen fans aren't wrong for thinking Queen was one of the best if not THE best at EVERYTHING. That's impressive. Back to the topic: John Bonham, Nick Mason, and of course... Roger Taylor, yay! |
