Well, obviously Beethoven was the greatest composer who ever lived, but limiting this to popular music: Billy Joel Freddie Mercury Brian May Paul McCartney John Lennon Elton John There are others, but those are my favorites, in order. |

Just limited to rock music for me, since I'm not going to pretend to know too much about other genres. -Freddie Mercury/Brian May/Roger Taylor/John Deacon. Probably not the public's definition of the best writers, but for me, they're all strong writers. -John Lennon -Roger Waters -Axl Rose -Elton John/Bernie Taupin -David Bowie |
The Man On The Prowl 16.11.2004 14:26 |
The best should be these British milestones: Brian May/Freddie Mercury/John Deacon/Roger Taylor Elton John Paul McCartney/John Lennon/George Harrison David Bowie |

Most of you haven't heard of Giorgo Moroder I think? Well...he wrote songs to: - Donna Summer - Bonnie Tylor - Flash Dance(music to the film) - Metropolis (The version from 1984) - Pat Benatar - Jon Anderson - Cycle V - LoverBoy - Billy Squier(a man Mercury also have worked with) - Adam Ant ..and he was also dedicated a song with Freddie Mercury from 1984, one of the solo songs from Mercury, the famous "Love Kills".. and not forget the beautiful song from the late 80's called "TAKE MY BREATH AWAY"..I dont remember who sing the song, but it was a female singer... |
brian_may_wannabe 16.11.2004 16:17 |
Brian May. I think, other then his guittaring, his songs are some of the best written. The best songs he written are :- We Will Rock You Sail Away Sweet Sister Who Wants To Live Forever Driven By You Too Much Love Will Kill You Another World No-One But You (Only The Good Die Young) Tie Your Mother Down |
deleted user 16.11.2004 16:37 |
You forgot "Save Me", "White Queen (As It Began)" from Queen II, "All Dead All Dead" from News Of the World and "Flash"!!!! My favourites of Brian are Save Me, Flash and Who want to live forever |

David and Bacharach. |
NOTWMEDDLE 16.11.2004 17:46 |
David Gilmour(greatest music writer although he admits he sucks at lyric writing compared to)/Roger Waters(great lyric writer but his music writing became less than desirable after Amused to Death) Roger Hodgson(although the credits on albums say both members wrote together, they actually wrote separately) Rick Davies Freddie Mercury John Lennon/Paul McCartney Dennis DeYoung Robert Plant/Jimmy Page Brian May Jeff Lynne Don Henley/Glenn Frey Angus and Malcolm Young/Bon Scott Syd Barrett Glenn Tipton/KK Downing/Rob Halford Geddy Lee/Alex Lifeson/Neil Peart |
Ramses 16.11.2004 17:53 |
I'd definitly add Brian Wilson into any list...and most likely would put him in the top 3 |
Simmer 16.11.2004 18:53 |
Freddie Mercury (ya know, the singer of Queen) Brian May (ya know, the guitarist of Queen) Roger Taylor (ya know, the drummer of Queen) John Deacon (ya know, the bassist of Queen) Actually, they are not even close with the best songwriters ever. Queen was all about fun... not how good the songs were written. |

Britney Spears...oh wait, she doesn't write her songs. Okay, scratch that. |
deleted user 16.11.2004 22:49 |
She doesnt really sing her own songs either... |
iGSM 16.11.2004 23:39 |
I'd say good ol' Macca. |
MetzgerR 16.11.2004 23:40 |
That would put her at a definite disadvantage, yes... Hm...I only know composers. So, can I add Dvorak and Mahler to the list, pretty please? Ja ne! |

Only one person mentions Page & Plant?? They are the Lennon and McCartney's of heavy rock. Freddie is awesome as well. |

Without Gilmour, Waters' music vision would not have been realized. If you listen to The Wall demos then the studio album, David Gilmour plus Bob Ezrin turned The Wall into a classic. |

I've never heard the Wall demos (I'd love to though), but I've never been one to underestimate Gilmours position within Pink Floyd. I saw Floyd on the first post waters tour and let me tell you, from the front row, they were freakin' awesome, Waters or no Waters... How about Strummer & Jones? Anyone mentioned them? |

Obviously, the Queen guys *top* (May, Mercury, Deacon, Taylor - in that order) my list...but my other choices are: The Brothers Gibb (ducking the tomatoes already - look/listen to everything BESIDES Saturday Night Fever people) David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, & Tina Weymouth (better known as Talking Heads) Jagger/Richards Bowie (David and Mystic) (Okay - you know who David is...but Who the hell is Mystic Bowie? Go find out for yorself at link That's all for now..... |

The person who started this topic has no idea of good music. Elvis presley NEVER wrote songs (except one) Giorgo Moroder is NOT a good songwriter. Anyway it's his opinion, here is mine: 1) Freddie Mercury 2) Mick Jagger/Keith Richards 3) Heather Nova 4) Miles Davis 5) Bono |
Lord Blackadder 17.11.2004 14:21 |

Brian May is the best, followed by(in no particular order): Freddie Mercury Jimmy Page Robert Plant John Lennon Paul McCartney The lead singer of Coldplay(name???) Roger Waters David Gilmour |
Mr Fred 17.11.2004 16:29 |
gotta say: Lennon/MCartney Mercury and May, the other 2 wrote soo few songs that it is stupid to set them up on the list for the histories best writers. Ray Davies is great too. But this is such a stupid topic beacause nobody knows so much about other genres then rock. The really best must be someone like beethoven, chopin, bach, mozart. |
Sebastian 18.11.2004 08:05 |
Lyrically, imo the best was John Winston Lennon. 'In My Life' is hunky-dory. Musically, I choose John Winston Lennon. I don't think anyone else is able to write such a fantastic piece like 'Woman' just with six bloody chords |

djaef wrote:Djaef, David Gilmour helped The Wall turn the album into what it was. Some of Roger's early demos were unlistenable. Then, the 1978/79 Britannia Row demos of The Wall with help from Gilmour and Ezrin were templates of what the album became. Waters was the lyrical guts of PF but Gilmour was the musical soul. The best songs on WYWH and Animals and The Wall had music penned by Gilmour. Also, David's voice and guitar work was component to the PF sound as was Rick Wright's keyboards. Strummer and Jones were the Lennon/McCartney of punk. Funny that The Clash opened for The Who on The Who's first of zillion Farewell tours in 1982. In areas like LA and NY, The Clash got a good response but in the South, the rednecks booed The Clash and wanted The Who and The Who only!NOTWMEDDLE wrote:Yes, you were the one I mentioned :) Yes, let's not forget Gilmour/Waters.
