Which one of Queen/Solo's lighting rigs and stage designes was the best in your opinion? |
AlleeCat 15.11.2004 16:03 |
IMHO (from the pictures I've seen) The Works tour had the best lighting rig & I like the stage design as well. |

The Works' rig was a monstrosity! I like the Crown rig, nice and square. The band probably suffered burns from it. |

the works stage setup - but the 79 pizzaoven lightshow was great |

Loved the light rig from the Crazy tour '79. So many lights crammed onto small stages, and the white spotlights arranged around the drum riser were always so effective. |

The Pizza-oven is just so simple and at the same time impressing. And the "Works"-rig was just beautiful, despite the debatable musical aspects of that tour. In an indoor arena even the Hot Space and Game-rigs looked very good. Without being Stepford, I liked all of their rigs from '76 on, cause they were all unique. |

The first Queen show I saw was at the NEC Birmingham on the Works tour a month before my 14th birthday.Unf'kin real,I was blown to smithereens by the lights smoke, cogs and sheer volume. So thats my favourite set because it was the first time I had experienced anything like that.I saw them twice on the Magic tour which was beatiful, but I'm so glad I got to see them indoors on the Works tour. |

which date? i was at 2:9:84 love the design - awesome |

I believe the 1984 one was called "The Flying Nun" and I liked it. The 1990 one was called "The Fly Swatters" and I liked that one as well. I was not so keen on the 1982 one as it seemed a bit minimalist. 1986 was pretty good, too, but I don't know what its name was. :-( |

Sorry, I do of course mean 1980. :-) |

Hi Brenski. It was the night before, the 1st.I think the support band was called General Public but they were shite! I was 13 then though so if it wasnt Queen I didnt like it.My tastes have expanded a bit since then. |

it was a great period for seeing bands live - between 81 and 85 i reckon i saw a band live at least once eVery tw/o weeks (excuse typing - pet parrot is on keyboa rd) anyhow some of the highpoints of this period were queen, ufo, purple, bowie, elton, dire staits, meatloaf, scorpions, ac/dc, blue oyster cult, teardrop explodes, rainbow, rose tattoo |

I know this is a very old thread, but here's a little clip of the stage being set up on ''The Works'' tour. |

You're right about the 82 rig, it appeared to be less impressive than the G2 and Pizza Oven rigs although it was a lot more expensive. However In use it was quiet versatile with the combination of three Par can banks and four completely mobile spot housings which contained shortened lenses spots and Molefays with colour changing. I liked all the rigs from 78/79 up to and including the flying nun. They were designed to give the show a certain look using banks of colour. It changed a little on The Magic tour and lost the look on the PR tours. Since 2012 they seem to have returned to that idea again. May favourite stage was The Works although I think the last US tour introduced a great stage too. |

Wasn't the Lightning Rig of the Hammersmith shows with Lambert based on the "Pizza" design from the Live Killers era? Both look very similar to me, and they look quite good. |

^ It was designed by Rob Sinclair and the Jands Vista L5 firm, likely for the purpose of being versatile enough to replicate different periods of Queen's live performances -- including the "Pizza Oven" from the Jazz Tour era. There's a nice writeup about it on Jands' website here. Some of the other pictures on the site remind me of the mobile rigs from the Hot Space and Works tours. IIRC, Rob Sinclair has worked with the QAL production on every tour since, and in my opinion has done great work every time. I believe Brian mentioned something about wanting to recreate the "Pizza Oven" for this summer's production, so I believe they may have something in store similar to the 2012 lighting this time around. |

I like the Game tour "spaceships", the Works tour stage and lighting rig, as well as the Magic tour setup. |

It's a digital lighting desk. The lamps used on the 2012 were Martin Mac units. Rob Sinclair designed the rig with the Pizza over and fly squatters in mind as I believe he wanted to echo the classic look of 70's and 80's shows. The lighting company was Neg Earth |

I realized the error after I posted it. Given that Brian and Roger seem to want to recreate the Pizza Oven on this go-around, I wonder if they're going to ditch the "Q" setup entirely. Having the large screen in the background is nice, but it doesn't seem compatible with the PO (at least the way they did it back in 2012). |

I'm trying to work out what gigs those videos belong to, the Hot Space footage could be from the following gigs... As Brian has the black and white jacket at the end, which looks to be the beginning of a show. Zurich 16/4/82 - "Some video footage of Under Pressure from soundcheck was broadcast on French TV on April 18, the day before the first Paris show, along with interviews of Freddie and Brian." - Queenlive.ca The cameras could have been still rolling at the beginning of the show as on the pictures on Bob's site, Brian has the same jacket on (even though the pictures are B&W. Frankfurt 28/4/82 - "The first picture is a screenshot from a TV special on the band called "Musik Scene", as the first few songs of this show were shot on film by a single camera. Flash, The Hero, and the last half of Tie Your Mother Down were aired." - Queenlive.ca Not 100% sure about this one but it could still be a possibility. Vienna 12/5/82 - "Another One Bites The Dust, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, and God Save The Queen were filmed for TV. Part of We Are The Champions (as well as some Frankfurt footage) was shown on the 1982 Queen documentary called "Musik Scene," - Queenlive.ca Again doubt it's this show but you never know. Milton Keynes 5/6/82 This is most likely the show it was captured at but I just realised that it looks dark but then again, it could be from any part of the show. And if it's not from any of the above, it could be another show that's been recorded and never surfaced? What do you all think? :P -Chin |
