Greetings to you all. Have been reading your noticeboard for a while now, and as an outsider looking in I would have to say that on the whole it is both entertaining and informative. I have finally decided to enter the fray and throw myself to the lions. I've been trying to come up with an amusing/informative/controversial issue to introduce myself, but reading back through the posts i'm likely to, a)look a pratt b)ask something thats been asked before or c)be classed as an irritating newbie. So, as people seem to enjoy thinking about lists of favourites, and in view of the fact that there seem to be a lot of people using the site who wern't around in the 70's, your challenge, my friends is this.
There were many classic albums released in the 70's (apart from Queens' of course). Which 3 would you recommend people go and buy as the best of the best, to introduce them to the era. My three in reverse order are:-
3: Rush - A farewell to kings.
2: Rainbow - Rainbow Rising.
1: Wishbone Ash - Argus.
To maintain an (albeit) tenuous link to queen on this challenge, my no.2 and no.1 choices both have links to Queen, one obvious, one not so. 10 Brownie points to whoever identifies both links. By the way, In case anybody thinks I'm a spotty 17 year old on his lunch break: Hammersmith Odeon, Boxing Day 1979. I WAS THERE!(and Mr Scully is now proudly in possession of the ticket stub, whilst I at last have video and audio of the gig)
The 70s, eh?
Eating mud and licking lakes clean. Bring out your dead! Rag and bone! Up at a quarter to four, twigs for breakfast, walk 135 miles to work with no shoes on over broken glass. 78 hour shift down the pit with maggots for lunch. Home just in time to have mum give you a well deserved clip around the earhole.
Halcyon days.
I would just give a potential Queen fan the five consecutive albums that laid the groundwork for the Queen Dynasty: Queen II, SHA, ANATO, ADATR, and News of the World. It's pretty hard not be enchanted by that part of the catalog....
if i gotta choose non-queen albums
boston - don't look back
thin lizzy - live and dangerous
ufo - strangers in the night
ac/dc - highway to hell
rainbow - long live rock n roll
sabbath - heave and hell
ozzy - blizzard of oz
montrose - montrose
now there's a great bunch of albums
