Just a thought but would you agree that disappointing sleeves often have disappointing albums enclosed?? Hot Space and The Works spring to mind as early examples of this trend. Queen II is awesome so is the cover... Innuendo v.good.....v.good cover. AKOM good album .....good cover You see it does work!!! |
Gunpowder Gelatine 10.11.2004 12:19 |
I don't know if the theory can always work, because people are going to have different opinions of an album and its cover. To me, The Works is a pretty good album, but you're right, the cover isn't all that interesting. |
Pim Derks 10.11.2004 12:23 |
I like the Hot Space artwork, very nicely designed by Freddie. |
Daburcor? 10.11.2004 12:28 |
I agree with Pim. I also love the album as well. |

Pim Derks wrote: I like the Hot Space artwork, very nicely designed by Freddie. The Hot Space art work is my favourite but it wasn't really "designed" by Freddie. It was used before, it's an Andy Warhol type of artwork. |

No, and you can't judge somebody else because he ain't a book. |
Adam Baboolal 10.11.2004 13:37 |
I remember seeing a T-Rex album cover with the same colour scheme as Hot Space's cover. Peace, Adam. |
Jimi 11.11.2004 07:55 |
Cheers Adam!!! I've been racking my brains as to where i had seen that 4 colour square design before many years ago. Now i can rest.... Here's a couple more. Genesis - trick of the tail great / great Genesis - abacab shite/shite! |

Definitely not!!!!!!!!!! Well, "Hot Space" has few memorable songs, but "The Works" ist one of Queen's best albums - Radio GaGa, I Want To Break Free and It's A Hard Life are three of the best pop singles in history. And the cover is perfect, too. The photograph of the band by Hollywood-Legend George Hurell ist best composed image of the group ever (although the photographs of the early years by Mick Rock are also very good) I like early Queen AND Eighties Queen - i wonder why some can´t stand their more "poppier" albums. There is also another theory: great covers not always promise perfect musical content - "The Miracle"-cover is very inventive - the musical content however only average (for Queen, of course). God Save The Queen |

WORKS- crap album and crap cover BUT AKOM- crap album and good cover... BUT Innuendo- great cover, great album BUT Queen- crap cover, great album... De gustibus non disputandum est- as many opinions as ppl on this board... Some think that Works is a masterpiece, I think it's crap... Some will say the cover for AKOM looks beautiful, I'll say it looks ridiculous... And we're all right, anyway... |

Brian_Mays_Wig 11.11.2004 10:12 |
Ah, but who released thiers first?? Queen or T-Rex?? |
Brian_Mays_Wig 11.11.2004 10:13 |
I absolutely LOVE Hot Space though. |

link Apparently, from a 1971 compilation of hits, rereleased in 1998. Peace, Adam. |
Jimi 11.11.2004 11:20 |
nice one adam. God you'd think they'd have learnt. Peter.... Radio Ga Ga / i wanna Break Free and Hard life are most definitely NOT 3 of the greatest singles in pop history!!! Please don't try to defend the indefensible!! |

Jimi... I said "pop history", - not "rock history". I think both genres take a very different approach to music. Anyway it is a matter of taste, and that is what I like about Queen - they could be hard rocking, they could be funky, they could do synth pop - so for me "Radio Ga Ga" for example is an extremely well crafted "POP"-song (not rock piece) with a very cool video (one of the best of the 80s) - and it was one of their most successful songs. I like 70s music and, unlike you, also 80s music. For you "Radio Ga Ga", "Like A Prayer" from Madonna, "Purple Rain" from Prince or "The Sun Always Shines on TV" from A-Ha might be crap .... but for a lot of people these are very well written songs. If you only like Queen from their early period you are not really a true Queen-fan. |
Wiley 11.11.2004 12:20 |
I believe there's an album by Julio Iglesias (latin singer) with a cover (or back image)remarkably similar to that of Hot Space. Similar colors, similar shape... Even the title of the album is "Calor" (Heat). Go figure.. :S Wiley |
AlleeCat 11.11.2004 12:34 |
Actually, by many fans' opinion 'The Miracle' had an awesome sleeve with not as awesome a record. I'm not Miracle-bashing as I like the album myself... but I know I've seen more than a couple of 'zoners post their dislike of it. I think most would agree that the cover was great though. |
Serry... 11.11.2004 15:35 |
Umm... How about Under Pressure and Hammer To Fall singles' covers? Total black one and total red one, but songs are hits. So my answer is no, can't judge. Most awful, IMHO, covers were designed for 'Hot Space' singles, especially for 'Las Palabras De Amor'. But the album's design is very good. |

Peter, I'm amazed how you seem to think i don't like 80's music or Mid term Queen because i disagree with your analysis of the 3 singles as being great in pop history. (You move the goalposts by mentioning the video...i've never heard a video in my life) It has nothing to do with when they were made. My issue is that there seems to be a raging belief that some things are actually better than they really are.It may be hard to take but Queen did write some ordinary material at times. Hey..i'll defend them all day long as well but thats a tough call you've made. As for a dislike of the 80's i accept it will never be a favourite decade but we do have The Smiths. Thankful for small mercies! |

i disagree with ya, jim who says the works is crap, it's good album, to many good songs on that record and just because other people don't like hot space doesn't mean you can't. I happen to like space, it's music for fun sake and most of the songs are good, people tend to say what they think there suppose to say, anyway just think for yourself. |
Jimi 12.11.2004 08:27 |
I hope i'm saying what i actually think!!! I don't like Hot Space and i don't like The Works. I've had these albums since their release dates and i think i should know by now if i like them. I can't make myself like them!! I do like the HS stuff live though. Much better. The're still shit covers though.... |
mike hunt 12.11.2004 08:27 |
a kind of magic is a great cover and the music is good, great music, one year of love is one of the best ballads they done, great vocals. you people must get over the fear of other styles of music, there's more to music than rock, magic is a good pop/rock record. not everything is meant to sound like bo rap or tie your mother down. |
