Why do some Queenzoners Shorten the name of Queen songs ? For example "I want to break free" IWTBF "Dont stop me now" DSMN These are the easier ones that are easyier to work out. however I am a great fan of queen, But Dont know all the songs Yet, and will not learn them by looking at a whole bunch of letters !!!!! Not mad, just stateing a point ! |

Not mad, just stateing a point !I understand. Well, simply put, it makes it a whole lot easier to abbreviate the song titles instead of saying them letter for letter. Take these few sentences for example: Do you like the guitar riff on We Will Rock You? It's fantastic! Not as good as the riff from I Want It All, though. It sort of reminds me of Death On Two Legs in a way. The best bassline is obviously Another One Bites The Dust. Or what about Under Pressure? Here's how it would look abbreviated: Do you like the guitar riff on WWRY? It's fantastic! Not as good as the riff from IWIA, though. It sort of reminds me of DOTL in a way. The best bassline is obviously AOBTD. Or what about UP? see how shorter it is? less pain on the hands lol However, not all song titles can be understood. Like these, for example: WIAWI = ? TATDOOL = ? MOTBQ = ? GDML = ? weird, isn't it? the first one looks like Miami lol! Haven't got a clue? Here's the answers: WIAWI = Was It All Worth It (From The Miracle, 1989) TATDOOL = These Are The Days Of Our Lives (From Innuendo, 1991) MOTBQ = March Of The Black Queen (From Queen II, 1974) GDML = Get Down, Make Love (From News Of The World, 1977) These abbreviations work sort of like the common internet lingo (lol, lmao, ttyl, rotflmfao, etc.) Though you may not understand all of them, I, and hopefully a few of the members here, will help you understand them. |

I don't see the problem in this. If we would short Flash Gordon's tracks names then yes - it'd be diffucult. Not many people can say what ITSC means :) (In the space capsule) |
BackToHuman 05.11.2004 17:11 |
i thought you were kidding about the Meatloaf titles (just picking the worst), but then almost immediately i thought of: HSN(YTTWROOMM) == ["Hot Summer Night (You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth)"] |

please if steve calls, tell pete... still laughing my ass off... Excellent one. Possibly the working title of Pain is so close to pleasure. However, I also dislike the abbreviations. I much prefer short titles like days of our lives Rock You etc... My most treasured abbreviation in the internet world is: k=ok=okay. an abbreviation of an abbreviation... |
Sebastian 05.11.2004 20:20 |
Yes sometimes saying one word of the title is better. Because BR can be either Bohemian Rhapsody or Brighton Rock. So it's better to say 'Bo Rhap' or 'Brighton' (the song, not the town) imo. |
BackToHuman 05.11.2004 22:19 |
i tend to use a combination of the two -- generally go with abbreviations if i feel it's pretty self-explanatory (is there anyone who doesn't just pronounce it "tat-dool" in their minds?); but in the instance of something slightly more off-the-beaten path (such as Bohemian Rhapsody), i'll shorten the words (BoRhap). or, occasionally, i'll just type the whole thing out if it seems to obscure even that way (TF? TeneFun? Tenement Funster) |
Gunpowder Gelatine 05.11.2004 22:31 |
I usually just use the shortened titles if I've already said the song once in the post. Or if I'm sick of typing out album titles, like using ANATO instead of A Night At The Opera. It's just so tiring to type out the full title! :) |

I already asked 2 or 3 times and nobody killed me. Just told me the meaning.Oops, HeM, you're living proof that qzoners are a bunch of great nice merciful ppl, if they didn't stone you yet :)... Personnaly, when I like a song, I find it's a pleasure to write it's complet name. But I can't hope this from everybody. So, the problem with abreviations is that nobody can understand it, except persons reading Queen forums all day long, and only those forums. Because, if you also read forums about another musicians where people do the same thing, and another kind of forums... it's not just enough to know all the titles of the songs by heart, you'll have to pratice reading the abreviation every day, and listen to all the songs too. It is very reducing. Maybe it's more easier for the writer, but in the same time, it's harder for the reader. In conclusion, this is totally disrespectful. Just like the SMS style. I'm not sure that even Brian could understand easily those abreviations ! The good compromise for the lazy ones, I think, is to mention one representative word of the title, at least the first time. By advance, thanks |
Penetration_Guru 07.11.2004 16:25 |
Excellent point about Brian, who uses "Bottoms" for Fat Bottomed Girls, "Mother" for Tie Your Mother Down, and "Champs" for We Are The Champions... If it's good enough for Brian... |
LiveAidQueen 07.11.2004 16:45 |
I don't always feel like typing the whole thing out...Most of the time I do though... |
Jimmy Dean 07.11.2004 20:58 |
I always found this to be quite snobbish. I say, if it's not on Greatest Hits I, II or III, don't use the shortened version. I saw PISCTP, and it took me a while to figure out that it was Pain Is So Closoe To Pleasure. For some titles like WATC, FBG, NIH, or IWTBF, maybe even album tracks like LOML or TYMD, it's ok... because these would usually be at the top of our heads anyways. (We Are The Champions, Fat Bottemed Girls, I Want To Break Free, Love Of My Life, Tie Your Mother Down) You can't use shortened titles for anything, because if we did then we'd have: CAG, TWM, FHLI, IYCBT, LHAE, KPTOW, RMF, or god forbid... CDOMC! For those of you not royal enough to get those last few, lol -- here's the answer guide: Calling All Girls, The Wedding March, Funny How Love Is, If You Can't Beat Them, Leaving Home Ain't Easy, Keep Passing The Open Windows, Rain Must Fall.... and CDOMC=Crash Dive On Mingo City. |

i hate the abbreviations... it shits me. im not complaining (well i am) but i cant understand. if you want to do it, go ahead, but i prefer the long ways, or shorter words. if its obvious what song/title im on about, i use it (eg. WWRY), but nup. i cant even understand the SMSs people send me! it confuses me. but i understand most now...i just have to think (which is a very new experience....) monte |

Short Message Service (I'm so proud of myself right now (not) ;) ) one of my friends also sends me waaayyy to abbreviated messages, so I spend half an hour trying to figure out what she ment, which ends up in my calling her, because I can simply make no sense of it whatsoever |
