I'm sure some of you guys remember earlier this year when John S Stuart mentioned he was attempting to put together a DVD of rare Queen videos. Well, now that I've got a job, I'm thinking of taking over this project and going around to collect as many videos as possible, starting in January. I was wondering, both John and you other guys, what kind of videos WOULD you guys like to see included on such a DVD set? Or what could you contribute? The reason I say January is because hopefully by then, I will have saved up enough money to get enough new parts for my computer (RAM chips, video capture card, 40/80 GB hard drive, multi-system VCR for both NTSC and PAL tapes), and start paying people to send out the tapes for me to transfer and use on the DVD's. (*Also, if anyone would like to help me out with those 4 things I need, whether with monetary donations or actual parts donations, I would really appreciate it, as it would help me out to get this started as soon as possible!) And I would also like to know how many of us Queenzoners around the world have a DVD-R burner, and even then how many of us can make DVD's for people to share with for free, because the point of the project was to distribute the DVD videos with as many Queen collectors/fans as possible, while doing it for free at the same time. Ive been involved in a few Pink Floyd trees and vines in the past. Ive been converting a lot of my Queen stuff to DVD recently, I wouldnt bother spending out all that on capture cards etc tho, its not necessary, you can get a DVD recorder for less than 200 quid now and you can fit 3 hours of video at seemingly lossless quality and none of that messing about converting files, authoring etc, all you have to do is hit record! The items I have are already on DVD which Im happy to provide for your weed, if you would like to make any changes all you would need to do is rip them with say ''smartripper'' for example and put together the discs you have in mind for your tree. I do have a lot of other Queen footage too, mostly 80s stuff on first generation tapes, to give you an idea.... my first ever video tape that I ever started recording on has Hammer To Fall shown on Top Of The Pops in 1984 (actually the second track on the tape!), admittedly that was just the promo video but it should give you an idea of what I have from that era onwards in flawless first gen quality, all of which Im happy to contribute to the tree, the only problem is that I have over 400 video tapes of music videos recorded from that period so time would be a factor in my digging out all the Queen stuff but it is not out of the question and is doable, you can mail me at info@payoladisco.com if you have any questions or anything specific that you are after from this period. Given that Christmas stands between now and the initial weed date, a DVD burner could be something worth putting on your Xmas list! They are available now for less than 30 quid so theres no harm in asking. From my own personal experience of distributing in this nature what happens is... Someone has a disc/s that they wish to distribute amongst the community, they then make a master copy of this disc which they send out to the first person in the (I'll choose the vine option for the sake of this explaination) VINE which the first person to receive makes a copy of for themselves and then sends on the master copy to the next person in the list, very simple, very straightforward and if we all work together we can have every piece of Queen footage thats worth having in no time and at almost no cost! Well, actually like I said earlier, I'm looking for both tapes (first-gen or second-gen if possible) and DVD sourced video material - I'm not picky. I think I will hold off on this project until July in terms of beginning the video transfers and edits, because by then I should have a new PC, depending how much I can save up between now and then. For that, I plan to get a PC with the best video capture card possible, and for that I am going to get a multi-system VCR from a store in West Edmonton Mall, which can play both PAL and NTSC tapes, as well as variations of PAL. *THEN* I will start asking people to send me tapes. I estimate that, if I should get maybe 15-30 tapes, it will take me a few months to get all the tapes viewed, transferred, and edited or spliced. Then I will make the final DVD masters, in both NTSC and PAL format versions. OR! If someone were to locate for me a stand-alone DVD-Recorder that can input both PAL and NTSC signals, while still able to be used in North America (eg. with NTSC TV's, and American/Canadian power supply outlets, etc.), that would be awesome! (And not to mention a time-saver as well!) |

That's a lot of work! I wouldn't dare try this, even though I've been involved in my own filming stuff for the last 3 years. The editing and encoding of captures is really, really tough and time consuming. I dread the time when I have to render a 1 hour video for my recent venture as it will probably take a full day to encode! Aggggghhhh! Thank god for multiple machines to work with. What software and mpeg2 codecs are you planning to edit and encode with? As for a really good capture card, I hear the Canopus range are good. One specifically escapes me right now. If you're planning on making something that is going to look and encode well, don't turn away from a little research on the mpeg2 codec subject. I know how to reset the 30-day MPEG-2 trial on my version, so there's no worries there. As long as I use the highest quality settings, I should be fine. TMPGEnc is the best IMO, not just because it's the only MP2 program I know how to crack via RegEdit, but it's very good featurewise. (My friend has an external capture card that I noticed on the capturing program has options for signal input compatibility - the only reason I'm not asking my friend for his capture device is because it only captures up to 6MBPS at most for video on MPEG-2 setting) What I need to know Adam, though, and I need your help on this: Are there any known multi-system VCRs with a time-base corrector, that can be bought and used within Canada / North America? I do have a capture card and am in England where PAL is our format, I do have some NTSC video tapes of other bands which I tried converting to VCD a couple of years ago and found that there were picture problems at the bottom quarter of the screen, Im assuming this is due to NTSC being a 525 line picture and PAL being a 625 line picture, fortunately I was able to get around it by cropping the bottom of the screen in TMPEGENc and then centering it giving the picture a widescreen look but of course altho this was a solution it wasnt ideal as some of the picture is lost so checking the PAL & NTSC compatiability of your capture card would be something to look into. |

The thing is though, I want DVD/VHS quality material, not some shitty WMV/ASF low quality material or VCD material that can be downloaded off the Internet. The point of this project is to have as much footage sent in, put together, and made available to all Queen fans worldwide in the best quality possible. That being said, I'm not a fan of Internet-quality downloads anyways. As well, 1-half of the SNL performance is officially out on DVD anyways (CLTCL), just as a side note |

I've been looking at a Panasonic model: link It records svhs, plays PAL/NTSC and has the Time Base Corrector. Don't know if it has an s-video out. Don't get too hung up about that cause depending on the varying quality of your tape's material, it may not matter much. My brother has an svhs model that does have the s-video out as well. Tried that and didn't see much difference. But like I said, may be down to the material on the tape. I'll see about asking for the model number. Also, are there any excellent video capture cards that can capture the video at MPEG-2 with the maximum bitrate of 9.8MBPS?I wouldn't bother as they're rubbish! On the fly encoding is plain bad. It's good as a basic recording thing that doesn't have to look amazing (dvd recorders). I took a disc I recorded shows on and looked at it on my computer - the quality was not as impressive as I thought it would be. The last mpeg2 card I looked at was a Sparkle/Pinnacle model. But after a lot of review reading and general pro/cons reading, I decided to stick with my StudioDC10+. Yes, I know it can give headaches sometimes. But I'm over that as, the quality still impresses me after 4 years. Don't be fooled by the 6MBmax capture rates. The codec for the card is VERY good. And again, it's all down to the material. I recorded stuff straight from tv and it looks flawless on playback. Especially revealing after having used the latest dvd-recorders! And as well, to answer the question as to why I'm waiting until July to do this: 1) My computer is crap (well, not completely crap, but not up to snuff, technologically-wise, either). The processor is an AMD Anthlon 1700+ (1.45 GigaHertz, I think), and the USB connection on my PC is the 1.1 version - I need a 2.0 connection for more recent technology:I still use a PIII-1Ghz as a second machine, which I added usb2 via a PCI card. It may not be up to the latest and greatest. But it's still a great workhorse. And plenty helpful when I need to process on one machine and work on another. I can split jobs, e.g. the main show encoded on my XP3000+ machine while the smaller videos like menus and featurettes are done on the PIII model. I guess USB2 is something that you want, rather than need. It's still useful as I've found with usb2 hard drives. However, when I tried capturing to a usb2 hard drive, it dropped more frames than usual. So, not great. 2) My RAM is only 256MBPS 3) My hard drive (C:\) is 40GB - I need at LEAST a 160GB drive, but I plan on getting two 300GB drivesDefinitely a good idea to get bigger drives, but two 300Giggers! Fair enough. Maybe get three drives, actually. Main drive could still be your 40GB for programs/games etc. And the two additional drives would make it faster to work as the speed will pickup more than with one main drive (with the video on it). Especially SATA drives! You could even try setting up a RAID array for that very multi-drive purpose. At the moment I've consumed a full 40GB, 160GB and have just begun sucking the life from a new SATA 120GB drive. My advice is to look for a really good motherboard that will give you the choices for SATA drives as well as normal IDE. And obviously good operation on the whole. For RAM, I guess 512MB is fine (what I have in both machines), but I hear that 1GB to 1 and a half is plenty. Again, not essential, though. Well, I hope that's a good chunk of info for you. I WILL graduate this year and be out of school as of July this year, so if I am lucky to get a few new components for my PC (I do have a dual layer DVD burner, which helps; the costs of the actual DL media doesn't, unfortunately :( ) Hopefully, depending on what I will be doing in the summer/fall, I MIGHT consider re-visiting this idea and start planning for it. I don't think though that I'll be able to get a PAL VCR for transferring PAL VHS tapes to PC; someone else may have to do that.
