Does everybody know if there's a complete version of the New York theme that sounds in the Highlander movie? I 've heard it was going to be released in the upcoming Queen box set, or it's just a rumour? |

I've heard a Freddie Mercury solo recording of a song called "New York", I'm not sure if its the same song, I can't really remember the "New York, New York" from Highlander, so I don't if this is it or not? |
pepe_botella 30.10.2004 16:19 |
New york it's a demo from the FM box set, i'm talking about "New York, New York" theme sung by Frank Sinatra and Liza Minelli, etc. It can be clearly heard in the highlander movie in the chasing scene i guess. |

B u t T h e Problem is ,we are not getting box sets. I think they should really release them, with a lot of DVD's from the younger years, and something fun, like a replica of Freddie's crown, Microphone, sombrero. or something like that. I mean come on, the people from QP can make tons of Queen products, for example the DVD'S here in the Netherlands Wembley was the best sold DVD. Milton Keynes is also a very good seller. Just release something good, they'll make lots of money i'm sure about that. But they are just lazy, they can make lots of money but just don't do it. -Make a Live Killers box set, with Live from Bruxlles (DVD), live from Munchen (DVD)and the zoom shows in Osaka(DVD), make a nice box and a replica of Freddie lether hat. voila un grand seller -Perhaps a Night At the Opera box set. Put on the Hyde Park DVD ('76), the original ANATO L.P., some autographs from the members, DVD from live at The Hammersmith in ('75) - A Christmas box (I'm getting out of ideas) With The Hammersmith show from ('75) and from ('79) euhm put on a bonus DVD with the clips from a winter's Tale, TGIC and some more nice Christmas gifts, nice box, small replica of Freddie's microphone (Bronx Statue)on top of the box It's that simple, perhaps the yare going to be expencive, but we got some real material then. Nice sell records (happy store's, happy QP, happy Queenfans) and the people from QP can get home with a warm heart , play with their children, love their wifes and have a nice live. Couse it's better than this: - Hi Honey + Hi husband, what was your day like? - Well we released another Freddie box set, we included a rare song Freddie sung for a small boy, their parents burried the tape with the boys body cause they didn't wanted that the tape will be released. And guess what? we went to the boys grave dug the tape out, and we are going to release it, and those parents thought they where smart, gni gni gni. Yeah those people can be really proud on their selves. Oh yes, and wasn't We Will Rock You DVD (Live Montreal ('81) released by another company? why can't they release more and rare stuff? I think we want more and rare DVD'S, right? |

We want, we want, we want. I know the boxsets will appear someday. When? Who knows. But it's all about patience. I won't let it take even a minute of my waking day. A boxset idea was considered around 92-94 and was scrapped. So don't expect it. Put it out of your mind and then it'll be a nice surprise when it does eventually turn up. As for New York, New York? How much more can there be? I can't see them having tried to do the whole thing. Maybe a couple of bits. Peace, Adam. |

Did I miss anything? Queen have always denied the existence of the full version of "New York, New York". What's the point of discussing the box sets when nobody said that the song actually exists! |
brENsKi 31.10.2004 12:20 |
"denied the existence of" is a bit strong .....they proably just "misplaced" it somewhere for safekeeping haha |

I agree with Mr Scully: "Queen have always denied the existence of the full version of "New York, New York". Thomas: "QP have denied the existance of several things... For example, they used to deny 'Silver Salmon..." Actually, that is NOT true. I have Queen interviews from the 1970's that mention "Silver Salmon", and the track has appeared many times in "print" (eg Record Collector 1980's). However, I digress. The real reason that it does NOT exist - is that it was another famous Freddie Mercury ad-lib. (Freddie would often make up - or sing one liners - just like "New York is dangerous" is a one liner which was later added to the "Under Pressure Rah Mix"). The "music" was ADDED to the one-lined lyric AFTER the session was over, and as far as I know, even the members of Queen were surprised at how well the "movie" mix sounded, as not only did it blend in musically, but visually also. Therefore, it is possible to build a musical bar (is that the correct term Seb?) around an ad-lib, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to build a complete song around one line. (Unless someone else did the singing ofcourse!). Hope this helps someone! |

Now do you see, TQ? It may not seem to make sense to just record a little bit of a song, but as John says it's even more complicated than first thought. The reason I said what I did is because I'm faced with the idea of re-recording a few songs for my dvd proj. Originally, I was going to just record snippet parts for the menus. Then I thought I'd record whole tracks and have them as extras. But even now, I'm beginning to think that snippets may be the quickest and easiest way. Sometimes, it's not as simple recording an entire track for one very small part of that movie. They knew how long that edit would've been. It wouldn't have deviated more than a few seconds here and there and so used that time to the full effect. And as we know, Russell loved the band. It would've been interesting and nice to hear that a full version exists, but it just doesn't seem like there's much more if any at all. Peace, Adam. |

One thing is to deny an existence of the record itself (7", acetate, master tape, whatever) and another thing is to deny that they recorded the song at all. |

I was in Montreux in 2002, also visiting the Mountain Studios and talking to David Richards and he confirmed that there IS a complete recording of New York New York. I have recorded his statement on 8mm video-camera..... As for my own US$ 0.02, it would make sense to record a whole version, so the movie-editors could choose what part to use and for how long. So there you have it! |
