What do we think of Jazz? I just bought it today. I'm listening to Mustapha right now. |
Wouter 28.10.2004 13:15 |
I think it's one of their least interesting records. The only song I really like is "Don't stop me now", the rest sounds very mediocre to me, to Queen standards that is. |
Pim Derks 28.10.2004 13:16 |
I like the tracks a lot, but it's not really an album to me. It sounds more like a bunch of tracks thrown together. |

Twas lack of organization that made the critics call it fascist, I think. But Don't Stop Me Now is nice, Fun It can be regarded as a cousin of AOBTD, IMO. |

as an album it lacks a natural flow, but as a collection of songs there's some good ones in there, with most of it being likeable stuff. DSMN is one of Freddie's finest moments - a distant cousin (apols to last poster) - of I Was Born To Love YOU. i'm sure i saw a quote (around the time of release)that they wanted to get an album of three minute pop songs out strange connection between Fun It and AOBTD - because at that point in time John and Roger's writing couldn't have been more different, yet there are clear similarities in both songs... |

I love Jazz. |

I actually like Jazz. I think it's an enjoyable album, although it usually isn't recognized that often. Dead On Time, Jealousy, Mustapha, Dreamer's Ball are all great, but I could do without Fun It. |
Rick 28.10.2004 14:54 |
This is one of my favourite Queen-albums, I like it a lot! All different styles of music are in it, beautiful. Jealousy is one of Freddie's best! I don't know, all songs are great! It's a great and very underrated Queen-album! |
KillerQueen840 28.10.2004 14:57 |
I love that album.. Mustapha and Let me Entertain you are my favorite songs on it. |

I love it! |

I love every song on that album! |
Mayboy 28.10.2004 15:38 |
Not a great fan of Jazz "Jealousy" and "In Only Seven days" are the only 2 songs i listen to from it |
Goo 28.10.2004 16:18 |
Jazz is one of my faves; I love the songs (except more of that Jazz), but I do have to agree that it doesn't have much of a flow to it. |

i bought it too recently, so i couldn´t form an in-depth opinion about it, but in general, i think it´s good. just bought sheer heart attack today - really wonderful |

The only songs I don't like are Dead On Time and More of That Jazz. I take the Rolling Stone critics with a grain of salt, American, after all. |

I like Jazz album. I could live without 'Fun It' and I'm another one, who doesn't like Roger's sound of drums (too 'thin' and electronical-like), but that's all. It's rock album full of shorter songs, no more, no less. Maybe they tried to answer start of punk era in that time. It's really not bad LP and that RollingStone Jazz review seems to me almost unbelievable. |
Wouter 28.10.2004 17:25 |
Well, Rolling Stone has never been exactly positive about Queen, except for Queen I. |
[StArMaN] 28.10.2004 19:11 |
and maybe hotspace, too. |
PD. 29.10.2004 03:07 |
For me Jazz is the greatest pop-rock album ever, no less. Along with A Night At The Opera. I have not listened either of them for months... |
Regor 29.10.2004 04:12 |
This is the album that for me really represents Freddies thinking of Queen-Music as pure escapism. Very interesting that it was mentioned they intentionally wanted it to be a 3-Minute-Popsong-Album, 'cause thats what I always thought of it. A few nice moments with two strokes of genius (DSMN and Mustapha) and that's it, on to the next, so to speak. |
Sonia Doris 29.10.2004 08:05 |
i think it´s on my top 10 queen albums |

Can't see any punk infuences on this album whatsoever. Was never aware this album was particularly unpopular with Queen fans? Its usually rated way above the likes of Hot Space, AKOM and The Miracle. The drum sound on this album are really interesting, with the snare panned to one channel and the high-hat panned to the other. I see The Strokes have played around with this technique aswell. |
crowley 29.10.2004 13:10 |
I don't like "Jazz" album as the whole, but I like particular songs e.g. "Jealousy", "Bicycle Race", "Fat Bottomed Girls", "Dead On Time", "Don't Stop Me Now". |
LadyMoonshineDown 29.10.2004 17:35 |
Jazz is obviously not one of their best albums, but I feel that people do not give it enough credit it deserves. I am not really fond of Don't Stop Me Now. I do not know why, but the song gets on my nerves just a tad, and I feel that there are better songs on the album than that particular one. Jealousy is a good song in my opinion because it exemplifies Queen sound with a slap of reality. Some people think its a love song, but if you read the lyrics (or even the title for that matter!) then you realize that it isn't. Dead on time is a great song. Dreamers ball is something different, but I like it just as well. Jazz is seriously underrated, even if it isn't as good as their other albums. |
Jimmy Dean 29.10.2004 18:21 |
Of course Queen were fascist... maybe not to that extreme... but think of it for a second. First, let's look at Jazz: BICYCLE RACE... if this song wasn't relesed as a single and stuck somehwere in the middle of an album, you would think it was one of their worst recordings... I mean what were they thinking?! Take a step back, Freddie probably realized if they can make We Will Rock You a hit by stomping their feet and clapping their hands... why not write a song about bicycles and.. oh here's a thought, let's ring the bells somewhere down the middle of the song! brilliant, lol. Very self-indulgent thinking... who cares what we do... people will like it. Why? Because Queen made it.. and big. Had they released Bicycle Race before We Are The Champions, Somebody To Love or Bohemian Rhapsody... Queen would be written off as idiots, and we;d never hear of them again. So kudos to Queen for their... balls! Second... Just watch a Queen show...Freddie is commanding the audience "You are now going to sing!" (as early as 79... heard in Live Killers). Or how abuot the Deh-Oh chant, he's practically got them in the palm of his hands. And we;re not talking abuot a handful of groupies... we're tal;king sell out crowds of hundreds of thousands of people at a time (Knebworth, Rio...) How were Queen not fascist, they practically ran their own goverment! This is why I'm a queen fan... all the rest is bull s**t! |
deleted user 29.10.2004 18:49 |
And please do analyze Bicycle Race without the Bicycle context. |
Jimmy Dean 30.10.2004 02:19 |
Yes I see the politics behind it... not a very insghtful song... it basically says, forget about what people say... do what you want to do. By fascist I meant, "here, these f**kers will take anything we give 'em.. so let's see what we can pull out of our asses.... hey brian didn't you write a song about tits and ass?, that sounds like a hit, well f**k that, I'll just go about and write a little ditty myself... i think I'll use bicycles, yes bicycles, that'll do! >>but freddie, that's absolutely mad! >>oh brian, these people will like whatever the bloody hell we want them to, bicycles it is... then how about a song that runs through the seven days of the week?! Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the Jazz album, very innovative, I think Bicycle Race is actually genious, many hooks and melodies dabbled here and there make it impossible to forget, not to mention the bells and those wonderful guitar runs That last post I made wasn't exactly serious... creative no doubt.. but I am not comparing Freddie Mercury to Benito Mussolini. A legion of fans is not the country of Italy... |
Flo Joe 30.10.2004 06:57 |
I like Jazz, allthough it is not one of my favorite queen albums. |
Lord Blackadder 30.10.2004 15:53 |
I really like Dreamer's Ball. Fat Bottomed Girls is abit boring on the record, compared to live anyway. The album is good, but it's not as good as the one before or after I think. |
crowley 30.10.2004 16:08 |
But "Bicycle Race" wasn't a major hit. It was a hit but not as big as "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "We Will Rock You". And WWRY was farly more complicated than just stomping and clapping. Notice that there wasn't something like an echo effect - they had to fake it re - recording the stomping several times, as well as the chorus. And the guitar solo is really technically complicated. |
thequeenling 30.10.2004 16:27 |
can i just say. The person named Love Of My Life. Your quote in your posts is class...it's the best thing ive ever heard in my life :) |
SilverShoes 30.10.2004 17:21 |
It's a good record. There's some decent songs on here, like Dreamer's Ball and Don't Stop Me Now and More Of That Jazz. I also think Bicycle Race is a lot of fun (always loved the way they used it in the medley on Live Killers, something I had completely forgotten about until I got the CD). If Jazz seems a little weak in some places, one has to remember that they were following up a string of what I feel are some of the strongest albums by ANY band. And at the rate that most bands turned out records back in the 70's, it was bound to come about that the quality is going to slip, if even only a little bit. But I still think it's a very good record. |

QUOTE] I said it came from the critic's mouth? link please. if you were to read slow enough, that is. Funny, they didn't say one thing positive about Jazz, but still gave it 2 stars. |
