Literally just this second was reading that exact link and then had a bet with a mate that there'd be a post on this message board saying about this.
I won the bet.
But yeah, a bit of a shocker that. Peel was a legend really, so it's a shame he is no more.
And his voice was quality indeed.

Someone had to be first and bad news always travels fastest.
Never having been a Radio 1 listener I wasn't familiar with his most famous work for that station, but I always found him to be a very funny and observent broadcaster on other radio and television programmes. His sense of humour appealed to me, and I also used to enjoy his Radio Times column, 'John Peel's Family Album'. I recall he once wrote a column about being mistaken for the Dalek novelist John Peel and wondered "is there another John Peel out there, one who novelises Daleks?" I sent him a letter explaining who the other Peel was (well, I was young and had nothing better to do!) and at the end apologised for being such a sad science-fiction geek to know about such things! He wrote back, "Not so! Information gratefully received!".
Anyway, very sad news indeed.
