ive been beginning to realize that during freddie's later years, he barely smiled in any of his photographs, you see the rest of the band smiling, but not freddie..was it painful to smile? when you think about it, it really hits you hard
Fred was very self-conscious about his protuding teeth.look at interviews; whenever he laughs, he tries to hold a hand before his mouth. (Hence, he grew a moustache. But he later shaved it again for the opera) Further, as he became thinner and thinner, a big grin looked a bit bizarre. Look at Days of our lives video when he grins into the camera when he sings "just a show". I think it looks a little scary.
But then again, he seems to be in very good moods in later videos like Breakthru, Headlong, Slightly Mad etc.
just found an interview with phoebe...
Kevin Parrott: Mr Freestone, Hope you are well :-) What is your fondest memory of Freddie? Thank you for your time, Kevin.
Phoebe: I like to remember Freddie laughing. There were so many time when he would just throw back his head and laugh when he was at home or with friends. He was very concious of his teeth so in public would always not laugh too much or hide his mouth with his hand.
If I have forgot to brush my teeth or someting in the morning I will some times hold my hand over my mouth.
Because I dont want them thinking I dont brush my teeth or anything,

LOL, it certainly seemed to be the case, anybody remember that bit in Police Academy where those 2 guys end up in the Blue Oyster bar, it looked like they'd gate crashed a Freddie Mercury convention! :)

Being in a good mood doesn't mean he smiles. But in these cases, you are right. In Breakthru and Headlong, he had that full beard stubble, so it sort of took away from the teeth. But Freddie looked so different in Healong, you could tell he wasn't well, which is why some countries refused to show it. I think the US was one of them.
Anyway, Freddie was very sensitive about his appearance and, most importantly, his teeth, but no matter how many times he said it, he never had them fixed. Just goes to show how committed he was to his look lol

Thats true, His lyrics give a good indicaation that even though he maybe was hurting deep down and physically he still smiled for the sake of the public and himself.
Also.. it was probably hard for him to smile cos of all the pain he was going through and knowing that it could only get worse not better (other than the fact that when his death finally came he would be relieved from his pain).
