Anybody have one of these yet? I bought one yesterday... there's been several of them on Ebay recently link
I already had the DVD but needed the remastered CD set, and this looked very nice at the price for both together in special packaging.

That would be awesome! Maybe it won't have the copy protection then! Cool!
Yeah I've seen all those 'HDCD' discs from there listed on Ebay constantly.. they're sure packaged pretty though :)
I have some karoke greatest hits but I'm disapointed cos they don't work with my machine well so the words don't show on the screen..not that it matters since I know most of them by heart but it would be nice for some proper ques!

is it synthesized music? or the real instruments/ original music?
The DVD and CD set are each official on their own, from Japan.
But this is a 3-disc digipack with the DVD and CDs together from Korea, which might not be official... or perhaps it's the same kind of 'official' as the Brazilian stuff. :)
And yes, they are remixes of the original recordings but without lead vocals. And the DVD is the original videos but with on-screen (English) lyrics for karaoke.
Sometime in late 1996 or early 1997 I found a listing in an import laserdisc catalog for something called 'Greatest Karaoke Flix' and I was intrigued. "Featuring the original Queen recordings" it said.. I couldn't believe it. I ordered it.. somewhere between $120 and $150 as I recall.
I got the laser set and loved the idea. Hearing these new mixes of the songs I knew and loved. Hearing new elements I'd missed before. I recorded the tracks to cassette and listened often.
As time went by, I sold all my lasers including this... and my stereo equipment too, to pay off a phone bill and get online (but that's another story). I kept my beloved cassette and played it in the car often until 1999 when that car died and I've not had a car with a tape deck since.
That cassette sat around as a reminder of my losses. As I got more advanced in my internet usage, I began to find these tracks on MP3 from a CD set which I learned had been released in Japan in 1998. It took me a long time and much effort to finally get every track, and make my own poor quality CD set to tide me over.
I finally got a sound system again in 2002 but this was during a major DVD addiction and Queen took a back seat to other interests for the most part. I bought the Queen DVDs I'd find, like the Flix discs from Brazil, We Will Rock You, etc.
Finally this year after a few months of massive renewed interest in Queen (I'd been reduced to only casual fan during the no stereo years) which began with the release of GVH2 (that's what brought me back full-swing.. GVH1 didn't do the trick) I ordered that karaoke CD set in March. Then I put my editing skills to good use and shared some 'restored' versions here. July came around and a new remastered CD set came out along with a DVD version of 'karaoke flix'. I chose just to buy the DVD at first, since I'd gotten the 1998 CD set not long before and the new one had copy protection. But I recorded and shared the bonus tracks here.
This evening I've been listening to all 35 tracks which I recorded from the DVD awhile back.
I'm still amazed that such a thing exists. This many instrumental remixes of the original recordings by any given artist. It's heavenly! Nothing against the original releases and I'm certainly not against Freddie's vocals, but I find it a wonderful experience to hear these songs in a different way. And then there's the 'Eye' instrumentals as well.
Queen Productions have done some really cool stuff I must say. I think they should combine all of these mixes, maybe throw in some more unreleased instrumentals which we now know were done at the time of recording, and release a whole instrumental collection of sorts.. and to countries other than just Japan. Forget the karaoke aspect and get these interesting recordings to a wider audience!
Anyway, I'm still waiting on this 'promo box' to arrive. I was bored tonight so I felt like writing this. Thanks for listening.
Well, I got it today and it's beautiful! There's so much I could talk about.. I'll update my site with full technical details of the remastered CD set soon, but for now..
The copy protection was not a problem. It does have the logos but I was able to rip both discs completely. They've restored some intros and outros here and there.. Friends Will Be Friends no longer has the video version crowd ending.. neat stuff :)
And I don't believe for a second that it's a pirate issue. If it is, they sure do a hell of a job with them. It's got promotional materials for the Platinum Collection, had a security tag (bought from a store it looks like..) has one of those imprinted holographic 'EMI DVD' logos.. the discs are high quality, properly labelled.. nothing bootleggy about them, no mistakes..
Anyway, it comes packed in a bag-like thing with the digipack safely packed inside the t-shirt, the t-shirt surrounded by the promo flyers, and inside this bag sorta like how a bedsheet comes when you buy one. Inside that, the digipack was fully sealed as well.
I'm quite happy with it!
