Aside from the 'Bohemian Rhapsody' cover on the 'Change Of Seasons' album, are there any other Queen covers by Dream Theater? |
inu-liger 25.09.2004 17:13 |
I don't think there is any other Queen covers by Dream Theatre. I could be wrong though. (Actually, I think they did a Queen medley, as I'm sure I have it lying somewhere on one of my MP3 DVD-R's) |
Albyboy 25.09.2004 22:28 |
Apart from the presence of some members of Dream Theater in the Dragon Attack tribute album, I'm rather sure they played "Death on two legs" live in some concerts... I don't know if there is any recorded version of it... I'm not expert at all about Dream Theater, so I think that someone else could give a more useful helping hand for this topic... :-) Albyboy |
The Real Wizard 25.09.2004 23:43 |
Yes, I think all that exists of DT members doing Queen material is mentioned in this topic. |
Giacco 73 25.09.2004 23:53 |
Sure there is an Mp3 of "Death on two legs" in the web performed by Dream Theater,in fact I have it.I think they did a very good job.I saw them live in Italy about 2 years ago and I liked them by the technical point of view but I wasn't that impressed for the feelings or emotions of their songs. They are way too intricate and unexpressive to my ears as the major part of progressive or progresive metal. The opposite of Queen IMHO that could do intricate and very popular and recognizeble songs at the same time. The secret is the melody. And so you have timeless songs.Apart this,no one can deny that Dream Theater are fabolous and amazing musicians but I'm way more concerned by the emotions and feelings of music. It's just a matter of taste. |

But consider songs like Goodnight Kiss and The Spirit Carries On. Those songs have some highly technical aspects, but both are dripping with emotion all the way through. And songs like Learning To Live and Erotomania... sure, they have their technical aspects, but their chord progressions and melodies... just astounding stuff. |
Giacco 73 26.09.2004 15:18 |
Yes,I do agree,I like their stuff but...I don't know. They are more strumentists that musicians. To put down a definitive sentence DT make music I listen to with my "ears and brain",and I can apply this to almost all progressive or prog metal music, while I listen to Queen with my stomach, heart and soul and that's what I'm looking for, feelings and emotions. And I can put in this category even The Beatles music, which is my second all time favuorite band.I've got friends that play an instrument and they love DT music and similar stuff.I think you should be a musician or know very well music to full appreciate them while Queen communicate to every person at every level in the world, that's why I think they are immortal. The most difficult thing is to make a simple and hopefully immortal thing, even in music...Like Michelangelo said while was painting, the less I put the more I have.In the end we are all looking for emotions and that's what Queen simply give us :-) |

I have an mp3 of DT doing AOBTD somewhere. |
MayFan 26.09.2004 19:52 |
I used to have DT doing AOBTD too, but it was on a hard drive that crashed and I've never been able to find it since. I have a couple of Rush covers by DT that are fantastic! I am a huge DT fan. I have thier whole catalog including all but 1 cd single. I've seen them live twice and I thought there is alot of material that has alot of emotion. Listen to Lifting Shadows Off A Dream, Take Away My Pain, Hollow Years, Spirit Carries On, or Trail of Tears. The all have alot of emotion in them. Over all, I think they are the best prog metal band on the scene today. BTW, Learning to Live is one of my all time favorites of theirs!! Good call GH! =) |

But in the end, it all comes down to what one defines as emotion. I find just as much emotion in many DT songs, but I often listen to them when I have a craving for technical stuff. I listen to Queen for different reasons, just like Zeppelin, Rush, Beatles, or whoever else I'm in the mood for. |
Fenderek 27.09.2004 03:38 |
IMO there's a lot of emotion in DT music- in fact, I think SCENES FROM A MEMORY is the BEST album ever- not only technically perfect, but with some great lyrics and awesome and beautiful melodies! I disagree with those saying it's only about the skill- what about already mentioned "Goodnight Kiss" or- my fav- "Space Dye Vest"? Those are extremely beautiful songs...! |

I have a version of One Vision done by Dream Theater. It's a studio demo which I downloaded off the web, but don't ask me where. |

Lord Fickle 27.09.2004 17:09 |
Sound quality is fine, but it's not exactly a 'definitive' version. It's OK, done in one take I think. A bare bones recording, but interesting all the same. |
MayFan 27.09.2004 17:20 |
Huh...interesting. Wonder if I can find it on winmx? I'll have to look. Thanks for the info! |
Lord Fickle 27.09.2004 17:35 |
That's where I got it from. I'll log on to WinMX, so you might be able to upload it from me. I'll only be on for about an hour though. |
MayFan 27.09.2004 17:43 |
Thanks guy, but I'm at work right now so I won't be on winmx for another 6 hours. |
Lord Fickle 27.09.2004 17:53 |
Ah... I'll try and remember to log on tomorrow, unless you want me to e-mail it to you, but it's a bit iffy putting e-mail addresses on here. Up to you. |
MayFan 27.09.2004 17:58 |
I'm not fond of posting my e-mail. What time is it where you are now and when are you usually on winmx? It's 6:00pm here. |
Lord Fickle 27.09.2004 18:16 |
I've put it up on my webspace, but it will only be there for one night. It's 11:15pm here in the UK, so you can download it from the link below until roughly the same time tomorrow night, as can anyone else who wants it. link |
MayFan 27.09.2004 23:26 |
Thanx man!! I got it! Sounds pretty cool. But it is a prime example of how strong and powerful Freddie's voice really was. And I think James is a great singer too! FYI if you are interested, I have a lot of rare DT stuff..like a cover of Rush's Red Barchetta. |

Because on DRAGOPN ATTACK- TRIBUTE TO QUEEN there's One Vision sang by... James LaBrie, but without anyone else from DT... It does sound like unfinished demo, but it isn't- that's how the whole album sounds, a bit amatourish... |

It sounds like Mark Portnoy on drums, but I have to admit the guitars are pretty indistinct, so it could just be James Labrie and a bunch of other musicians. I have the Dragon Attack CD somewhere, so I'll try to dig it out. |
Lord Fickle 28.09.2004 10:58 |
Hey, you're right! It's the version from Dragon Attack. James Labrie, but no one else from DT. How fucking embarassing! I call myself a Dream Theater fan too! I assumed it was just a demo version or something. Forgot I even had the Dragon Attack CD, but it's so crap, that's not surprising. Sorry 'bout that, darlings! :D :D |

Funny if you think about some of the names partecipating... I mean, an album such as "Working Man - A tribute to Rush" surely isn't that stunning, but you perceive that there is a far better work behind it... A Queen tribute album would have deserved something better, wouldn't it? ... And everytime I hear that clean guitar playing the One Vision intro... AAARRRGGGHHH!!! Albyboy |
MayFan 28.09.2004 15:23 |
"... And everytime I hear that clean guitar playing the One Vision intro... AAARRRGGGHHH!!!" I'm glad you said it! I didn't want to bash it because Lord Fickle was so nice in letting me have it. The beginning is rather cheesy....but..the rest of the song isn't that bad. It's the production that makes it bad. Still, being a fan of DT & Queen, it's very cool to have. Thanx again LF!! |
